WOMEN’S SOCCER The Vikings return home for the first time in three

weeks when CSU hosts Akron at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7) before heading back on the road to Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday (Sept. 9). CSU enters the week at 2-3 overall after a 3-0 setback at Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 2) in the Vikings lone contest last week. The Vikings out-shot the Golden Griffs, 19-12, in the contest. Jaime Avona continues to lead the team with six points on three goals, while Vickie Havas has five points on one goal and a team-leading three assists. Sarah Wood has made 21 saves in goal, posting a .724 save percentage.

MEN’S SOCCER Cleveland State heads out east for two matches

this weekend, competing in the Brown Invitational. The Vikings play Brown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 7) and have a match against Siena at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 9). The Vikings are 2-1 this season after splitting two matches in Michigan over the weekend. CSU fell to Oakland in overtime, 1-0, on Friday, but rallied to beat Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday. Alfonso Sandoval, Aslinn Rodas and Zach Hayden scored for the Vikings. CSU has outscored its three opponents, 5-1,this year with both wins coming via shutouts.

Fall Invitational, hosted by Bucknell, on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 8-9). The Vikings bring back their entire roster from last year’s squad that finished fourth at the Horizon League Championship.

MEN’S GOLF OPENS 2012 SEASON The Vikings opened the 2012 fall season at the Turning Stone Tiger

Intercollegiate on Sunday and Monday (Sept. 2-3) at at the par-72, 7,105-yard Kaluhyat Course at the Turning Stone Resort. CSU carded rounds of 305-293-302 and finished seventh of 13 teams with a 54-hole total of 900. Junior Andrew Bailey, the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year, tied for 12th place overall at the event with rounds of 70-7375 (218), while sophomore Michael Balcar, playing as an individual, joined Bailey in 12th place. He carded rounds of 74-71-73. Senior Jon Riemer tied for 19th place. After an opening round 76, he carded a two-under-par 70 and finished the tournament with a round of 74 for a 54-hole total of 220. The Vikings are now out of action until next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 10-11) at the Marshall Fall Invitational.

VOLLEYBALL The Vikings will compete in Woodling Gymna-

sium for the first time of the 2012 season this week, hosting Pittsburgh in a midweek contest and the CSU Invitational on Friday (Sept. 7) and Saturday (Sept. 8). CSU will host the Panthers on Tuesday (Sept. 4) at 7:00 p.m., while they will be hosting Buffalo on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7:00 p.m., and Oakland and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 12:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively. Last weekend the Vikings competed at the Indiana Invitational and faced Eastern Michigan in a midweek contest, coming out of the week with a 2-2 record. CSU earned a five-set victory against Eastern Michigan and posted a 3-0 sweep of Bowling Green at the IU Invite. Kara Koch was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight weekend after leading the Vikings with 47 kills on a .349 hitting percentage. Kerry Winchester combined for 27 kills at the IU Invite, while Amanda Medvetz led the defense with 35 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY Cleveland State will continue its 2012 campaign

this week, running at the Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday, September 8. The women’s race is slated for an 11:15 a.m. start at Cass Benton Park in Northville, Mich. The Vikings opened the season last weekend at the Flyer 5K Challenge, finishing sixth as a team. CSU was led by the freshmen duo of Ashley Lydic (52nd – 21:04) and Maddie Korak (60th – 21:31) and sophomore Katie Webb (54th – 21:14). Angela Kirila (66th – 22:33) and Rachel Niemi (68th – 23:15) rounded out the top-five finishers for CSU, while Megan O’Keefe (69th – 23:27), Ashley Berlin (73rd – 24:31) and Amanda Kalain (75th – 24:56) also competed.

Koch led the volleyball team to a 2-2 record last week, including a fiveset victory at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. Against the Eagles, Koch recorded a season-best 31 kills, while also notching 21 digs to post her second double-double of the season. For the second straight weekend Koch earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team, following a 47-kill weekend at the Indiana Invitational. She averaged 4.70 kills per set at the invite, and notched a .349 hitting percentage.
