Erica McNew Led the League In Batting Average and Home Runs Last Season.

2014 Season Preview There will be a new look to the Cleveland State softball team this year as Becky Norris takes the reigns as the 11th head coach in program history. Norris arrives at CSU with 17 years of collegiate coaching experience, including the last nine years at Indiana Tech where she won 229 games over nine seasons. At CSU, Norris will combine 11 returning letterwinners, including All-Horizon League honorees Susan Knight, Erica McNew and Cynthia Woodard, with a talented group of newcomers to form this year’s roster. PITCHERS Susan Knight headlines a trio of experienced pitchers expected to see action in the circle this season. Knight earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Newcomer team last year after winning 16 games and posting a 2.67 ERA. She struck out 131 and fired 16 complete games. Her 16 wins were tied for the ninth most in a season at CSU, while her 36 appearances were the second most by a freshman in a season in program history. Senior Sara Shields and junior Alex Radjen give the Vikings a set of experienced arms to call upon. Shields, a second team All-Horizon League pick as a designated player her sophomore season, has won 15 games over the last two seasons. Radjen made 19 starts last year, winning four games and posting a 2.27 ERA with 68 strikeouts. Shields can also help the squad at the plate with her bat and can fill in as a designated player or second baseman if she is not in the circle. She hit .321 with seven home runs as a sophomore.

CATCHER Erica McNew will get the lion’s share of innings behind the plate after putting together one of the best offensive seasons in Horizon League history last year. The Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and a first team All-Horizon League pick last season, McNew just missed the triple crown. She led the league in batting average (.413) and home runs (18), while ranking second in RBI (44). Her 18 homers were the second most in a season in CSU history, while her batting average and RBI total were the third most in a season in program history. The CollegeSportsMadness.com Field Player of the Year in the Horizon League last year, McNew posted a .811 slugging percentage and a .503 on-base percentage. Freshmen Allie Scali and Olivia Wulfhoop will provide depth behind the plate. Scali earned four letters at Parma H.S., earning all-conference honors three times, including as a senior when she hit .430 with 38 RBI. Wulfhoop hit .467 with a school record 10 home runs and 36 RBI as a senior, earning second team All-Ohio honors. OUTFIELD The Viking outfield is loaded with speed led by Alisha Silva who will man centerfield after the departure of Caila Ferro. The speedster played in 26 games last year with 15 starts, while also serving as a pinch runner in key situations. Janessa Rivera-Keahi will move from shortstop to leftfield this season. In her first season at CSU after transferring last season, Rivera-Keahi was one of just four players to start all 49 games. The slap-hitter batted .219 with four doubles and drove in 12 runs.

Season Preview Alyson Broschk and Katelind Phillips will share duties in rightfield with both also capable of filling in as a designated player. Phillips should also see some time at second base. Broschk hit .245 in 48 games last year with eight doubles, two home runs and 20 runs batted in. The left-handed Phillips batted .254 last year with nine doubles and 11 RBI. INFIELD The Vikings return a majority of their infield from last year, but must replace first baseman Dara Toman, last year’s Horizon League Player of the Year. Cynthia Woodard returns and will most likely slide over to shortstop from second base where she garnered second team All-Horizon League honors after hitting .252 with eight home runs and 19 RBI in the middle of the order. She has the ability to drive the ball and help offset the loss of Toman’s 15 home runs and 38 RBI that are gone. Phillips and Shields could manage second base, while Darien Ward will also get some time. Last year, Ward started 22 of the 32 games she played in and hit .209 with a pair of doubles. The slap-hitter is also one of the quickest players on the roster and can fill in as a pinch runner. Nena Doran returns for her third season at third base and has played in 101 career games. A member of the Horizon League All-Newcomer team as a freshman, Doran hit .177 with eight RBI last season.

Susan Knight Was Named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team Last Season

Cynthia Woodard Earned Second Team All-League Honors Last Year. Hannah Yoe returns to the lineup after missing all but two games last year with an injury. She started 34 of the 35 games she played during the 2012 season, scoring seven runs and driving in six. Freshmen Katelyn Thomas, Taylor Wawrowski and Mel Woodard will add depth to the infield. Thomas was a first team all-league selection in each of her final three seasons at Elyria H.S., while Wawrowski hit .490 with 37 RBI to earn first team all-league honors as a senior at Aurora H.S. Woodard, the younger sister of Cynthia Woodard, helped Elyria H.S. to a runner-up finish at the state tournament as a senior. SCHEDULE The Vikings open the season with four games in the CSU Dome Tournament, the second year that the Vikings will host the event under the dome at Krenzler Field. CSU then heads south for four games at the Charlotte Invitational (Feb. 15-16) and for five games at the Winthrop Invitational (Feb. 28-March 2). After a 10 game Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Fla., that includes nine games at the USF Under Armour Classic, the Vikings return home to host UIC for a three-game series on March 22-23 to open Horizon League play. CSU is slated to play three league series at home and four on the road, including three games at Wright State on May 3-4 to conclude the regular season. The regular season champion will host the Horizon League Championship from May 7-10 with the tournament winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The 2009 softball season began in Las Cruces, N.M. and concluded in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Vikings playing in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history. Along the way, CSU experienced several highs en route to winning 35 games, including a school-record 17 league games. The season began on Feb. 6, the earliest start day in program history, with a 10-2 loss to Ohio State in the Troy Cox Invitational. Three more losses followed until the Vikings earned their first win of the season, 17-6, over UMKC. CSU headed south to the University of Georgia Invitational one week later, going 3-1, to place second. Following a two-week layoff, the Vikings traveled to the Oklahoma State Invitational where they went 2-3, including a thrilling 15-13 win over Northern Colorado on March 6. After sweeping a doubleheader at Dayton and splitting a twinbill at Marshall, the Vikings opened the Horizon League season with two wins in three games at Wright State. That began a streak that saw the Vikings win 11 of 13 constests. Both losses were by one run. Following a 3-2 loss at Loyola in the series opener, the Vikings stormed back to win the next two and followed that with a three-game sweep of Youngstown State. The Vikings lost some momentum the following weekend when UIC won two of three in Cleveland, all but assuring the Flames of the regular season title. Following a sweep of Kent State, CSU took all three games from Valparaiso to earn the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Championship. The Vikings won their first three contests to advance to the championship, but were dealt an 8-4 setback by UIC on May 7, setting up a winner-take-all game the following day. CSU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth before UIC rallied for two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth. Then with two outs in the seventh and runners on first and third, Sarah Clynes hit a line drive towards right center that Andrea Nagy dove for and caught to preserve the win and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. CSU fell to Notre Dame in a first round game, 3-1, and was eliminated by Miami (Ohio) the following day, 5-4, when Christa Coppus was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game. The Vikings reaped the benefits of their success as Amanda Macenko and Coppus were named to the all-league first team with Macenko repeating as Pitcher of the Year. Amanda Houchin, Shalyn Adams and Lia Gordon were each named to the all-league second team, while Mimi Mahon was voted to the all-newcomer team. In addition, Macenko was named to the All-Midwest Region team by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association.
