CSU was last in action on Monday and Tuesday (March 25-26), finishing 13th of 16 teams at the prestigious Memphis Intercollegiate. The event featured four teams ranked in the top-50 in the nation and several others in the top-100. The Vikings carded rounds of 313-319-311 (943) as the first day of the event was played in adverse weather conditions, including wet, windy, rainy and snowy weather. Andrew Bailey was CSU’s top finisher, tying for 29th place with rounds of 77-80-74 (231). Jon Riemer and Brendan Bryne tied for 54th place at 237.

CSU was scheduled to play in the Butler Spring Invitational on March 25-26, but the tournament was canceled due to poor weather. The Vikings have not played since opening the spring season with a runner-up finish at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 11-12. CSU shot 327-318 at the event, finishing nine shots behind team champion IUPUI. All five of CSU’s scorers finished in the top-20, led by Ariel Sparrow and Madeline Kaminski who tied for 15th place with 36 hole totals of 161.
MEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will continue
their four-match roadswing this weekend, traveling to Wisconsin for a contests at Marquette and Green Bay. CSU will open the weekend with a non-league match at Marquette on Saturday (April 6) and will then face Green Bay on Sunday (April 7). Cleveland State enters the weekend on a three-match win streak, standing at 6-9 overall and 2-0 in Horizon League play. Last weekend the Vikings earned a pair of 4-3 victories – defeating Duquesne and Youngstown State. Matt Kuelker and Ali Shabib each went 2-0 in singles play over the weekend, Kuelker improving his overall record to 14-11 this year and Shabib improving to 11-13. Shabib also teamed with Niklas Jonsson to go 2-0 in doubles action, as they now stand at 19-5 overall and 8-3 during the spring season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will con-
tinue Horizon League play this weekend, traveling to Wisconsin for two matches. First up will be a 5:00 p.m. EST contest at Milwaukee on Saturday (April 6) and then a 1:00 p.m. EST match at Green Bay on Sunday (April 7). Entering the weekend the Vikings stand at 7-9 overall and 1-1 in league play, falling to Youngstown State (5-2) last time out. Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek picked up CSU’s two points against the Penguins, playing at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots, respectively. Kara Sherwood has a teambest 13-11 singles record this year, while Ellen Folkers, Lazaris and Janek all have nine wins. During the spring season, Sherwood, Janek and Lazaris all have a team-high eight singles wins.
SOFTBALL CSU (10-13, 1-2) will be
back on the road Saturday and Sunday for its second weekend of Horizon League play when the squad heads to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix. The two teams will play a three game series, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. CST doubleheader on Saturday, followed by an 11:00 a.m. CST game on Sunday morning. CSU went 1-2 at Wright State over the weekend, winning the opener, 2-1, on Friday before falling 6-3 and 6-5 in a doubleheader on Saturday. Freshman Susan Knight pitched a complete game to earn the win in the opener, giving up just four hits and an unearned run, while striking out three. Erica McNew led the way at the plate with three hits, while Caila Ferro and Janessa Rivera-Keahi both hit their first home runs of the season.

Shabib helped CSU to a pair of wins last week, winning both of his matches at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. In a 4-3 win at Duquesne, Shabib earned a key win at No. 1 doubles that helped the Vikings win the doubles points. He also won 6-2, 7-6 (4) in singles. In Saturday’s 4-3 win at Youngstown State, he once again helped CSU win the doubles point with an 8-6 win at the No. 1 position, while also earning a straight set victory at No. 3 singles.
