Classes
See Class Schedule and Tuition for days, times and fee information. Students ages 6 and older with some ballet experience will be evaluated prior to being assigned to a class.
Creative Movement (4-5 years old) Our program emphasizes the eight elements of movement: centering, gravity, balance, posture, gesture, rhythm, moving in space, and breathing. These elements are not only the foundation of dance but also necessary skills as children develop physically and emotionally in order to get ready for more formal and structured instruction. Students take one class per week. Pre-Ballet (5-6 years old) This is the beginning of a more in-depth study of ballet technique. Introduction of steps using proper ballet terminology is necessary. Ballet etiquette is part of the curriculum. At this level, individual expressions of feelings, music interpretation, spontaneity, storytelling, and team work are taught. Students take one class per week. Level 1 (6-7 years old) Students are introduced to a more in-depth study of ballet technique. Introduction of new skills using proper ballet terminology will continue as well as individual expressions of feelings, music interpretation, spontaneity, storytelling, and team work. Students take one class per week.
Level 2 (7-8 years old) With two hours (2 classes) of training per week, more details and in-depth understanding of classical ballet technique is taught. Strength and mastery of some of the most important skills are emphasized and expected. Level 3 (8-10 years old) At this level the training is more rigorous and demanding. A minimum of 3 hours (2 classes) and maximum of 6 hours (4 classes) per week of training is required. New steps and more challenging combinations are introduced. Strength and mastery of all skills are expected at this level. Level 4 (10 years old and up; Pre-Pointe) This is an intense program designed for more serious students. With a minimum of 6 hours (4 classes) of required training per week, students will begin to focus on and prepare for pointe training. Students may be invited to participate in selected community outreach activities through the year. Level 5 (Trainee and Beginning Pointe) This is an intense program designed for students who enjoy the challenge of more advanced training or would like to pursue a professional career in dance. With up to 7.5 hours (5 classes) per week of required training en pointe and technique classes, dancers may be invited to join the Columbus Ballet Company. Students may be involved in community outreach activities. Level 6 (Advanced) This is for the most advanced dancers who have experience dancing en pointe. With up to 7.5 hours of required training on pointe and technique classes, dancers are considered members of the Columbus Ballet Company. Dancers will be involved in our community outreach activities. Beginning/Intermediate Jazz (8-10 years old) This class is designed to introduce young dancers to a new discipline allowing them to discover their individuality. Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Some ballet training is required.
Beginning Modern (8-10 years old) This class focuses on the expression of inner emotions using a free-flowing, interpretative style rather than following the rigid rules characteristic of many dance disciplines. Some ballet training is required.
CLASS SCHEDULE Classes Run in two 16-week sessions: August 13-December 8, 2012 • January 7-May 4, 2013 All classes are held at the Rankin Arts Center. Instructors are designated by their initials in parenthesis.
Monday
Advanced Jazz/Lyrical For dancers with advanced ballet training, lyrical dance technique involves more subtle and emotional movements. It is a combination of intricate, highly technical, and naturalistic moves. It is commonly set to popular music. Adult Ballet (18 years old and older) These classes are generally structured the same as classes for younger dancers. Your class will begin at the barre for warming up, then progress to the center for bigger movements. Aim to strengthen, tone your body and, most of all, to have fun. Taking part in an adult ballet class is good for your body as well as your mind. CSU Dance Conservatory instructors include: Maria Hirsch (Director), Bridget Adams (BA), Laura Johnson (LJ), Tiffany Jarczyk (TJ), Anna Rodriguez (AR), Janie Sutcliffe (JS), and Jordan McDonald (JMcD).
