Level 2 Listening and Speaking introduces students to abstract ideas necessary for effective daily communication. Students practice listening to and speaking formal and informal language. Students plan and give short presentations, learn about small talk and idioms, practice common interactions, develop their note-taking skills, and are introduced to phonetics in order to improve pronunciation. Students practice listening for main ideas, details, sequences, and learn about inference based on tone and stress. Students learn how to summarize a short listening and discuss new and familiar topics using new vocabulary.

Students review and expand on the twelve past, present, and future verb tenses (including simple, progressive, perfect, and perfect progressive). In addition, students review and expand their understanding of modals and their different functions; when and how to use gerunds and infinitives; the meanings of and grammatical structure of phrasal verbs; as well as conditional sentences in present, past, and future. Time permitting additional topics may be covered including negative and tag questions, the passive voice, and direct and indirect speech. This course is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of basic English grammar who wants to master those concepts in addition to exploring more advanced topics and structures. Grammar Level 4

Students will review the basic structures (topic sentences, supporting sentences, concluding sentences) and types (descriptive, comparison, cause-effect, classification) of paragraphs. Students go on to develop brainstorming and outlining skills necessary for writing essays. Using these skills, students will then write five-paragraph essays following the standard five-paragraph structure of introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Students will create first drafts, and make revisions based on corrections and guidance from the teacher. Students will learn pertinent word associations, as well as common noun, verb, adjective, and prepositional collocations which they will integrate into their writing. This class is ideal for any student with a good writing background looking to develop their formal academic writing ability.

In this advanced class, students review and refine their knowledge of essential English grammar with an emphasis on correct usage and practical application. In addition to reviewing all of the grammar components presented in lower level courses, this course focuses on common grammar errors and practical use of grammar in writing and speaking. Writing Level 4 This class is focused on producing a variety of writing samples, including casual and formal correspondence and various types of essays. Emphasis is placed on organization, formatting, editing skills, using evidence and examples to support thesis and opinion. Students learn to formulate ideas and thoughts into well-organized writing samples and to support written opinions and arguments with thoughtful evidence and details. Students will finish this class with a portfolio of writing samples and tools to produce excellent writing in any setting. Aug 15-Dec 9

Reading and Vocab Level 4

Students will review the basics of pronouncing American English including the sounds and symbol. Opportunity and guidance for practice is encouraged both individually and with partners/groups. Emphasis is placed on practice outside of the classroom as well. Â This class includes instruction on basic note-taking skills. Students listen to short listening passages on various topics and must determine the main idea, supporting points, and conclusion of the speaker. Students also give presentations and speak in front of their classmates and teacher. There will also be activities emphasizing extemporaneous conversation that challenges students to respond automatically when spoken to. This class is ideal for a student who wants to develop essential note-taking skills, improve their pronunciation, and have continual opportunities to practice speaking with both native and non-native speakers.

This class is for advanced students and builds on their skills of skimming and scanning, identifying main ideas, and deriving meaning from context. Â Skills such as determining author intent, inference, negative detail, and paraphrasing are given greater attention. Students read lengthy informational texts that contain new or advanced vocabulary and engage in thoughtful discussions related to the topic presented in the material. Â Students gain new skills in determining meaning from context. Vocabulary includes academic words, idioms and common English phrases. Aug 15-Dec 9

Listening and Speaking Level 4 Students enrolled in this class are challenged to improve their listening and speaking skills through a wide range of listening and speaking exercises. Students become more familiar with casual conversation and also listen to academic and professional conversation and audio/visual presentations. Students will practice notetaking skills and listening for main ideas and details. This advanced course is for students who need to improve the quality and speed of their listening and speaking skills. Students have multiple opportunities to apply grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and conversation skills through casual dialogue, presentations, debates, interviews, and group discussions. This class is highly interactive and requires constant involvement in conversation along with a willingness to be corrected and expect clarity from conversation partners. Aug 16-Dec 9

I M P O R TA N T I N F O R M AT I O N WHEN TO REGISTER Why wait? Register EARLY! Registration is available now. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to grab a seat in class. Late registration will be accepted if the class is not full. FEES Course fees are stated at the end of each course description; payment is due at the time of registration. Laws exempting senior citizens from college tuition costs do not apply to these self-supported courses. No cash is accepted after 5:00 p.m. If you register after 5:00 p.m., please pay by check, credit card, or company billing (purchase order number and contact person required). Make checks payable to Columbus State University. PAYMENT PLAN POLICY Continuing Education offers payment plans for select Professional Development courses. Eligible courses are taught in-house with a tuition fee of $300 or more. Online courses or courses offered via third-party educational partners do not qualify for this payment plan option. However, some of these programs may be eligible for financial assistance offered through the educational partner. The Continuing Education payment plan offers the option of paying tuition in three installments. 50% of the tuition is due at the time of registration. The remaining 50% is divided into two equal installments: the first is due on or before the first day of class; the last installment is due by the mid-point of the class. In order to utilize the Continuing Education payment plan option, you must register for the desired course(s) in person and complete a Payment Plan Agreement. For more information or to inquire about the eligibility of specific classes, please call 706.507.8073. REFUND POLICY As Continuing Education (CE) is a self-supporting branch of Columbus State University, we rely on student registration fees to cover all costs. If you must withdraw from a class, please notify us by 5:00 PM at least three business days before the course begins. A full refund minus a $15 processing fee will be issued. You may also choose to accept a CE credit voucher for the full course amount, in lieu of a refund, and processing fee will be waived. If you withdraw after the 3-day period, but before the class begins, you will receive a 50% refund or credit voucher. No refunds can be given after a class begins.

In the event of class cancellation or changes of times and dates, we will attempt to notify you at least two business days before the course begins. If you cannot attend the course due to these changes, you will receive a CE credit voucher, which is valid for 18 months from the date of issue. INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY Columbus State University will not issue refunds for classes that have been postponed due to inclement weather or other circumstances beyond our control. We will make every effort to reschedule such classes. In the event of inclement weather, tune into your local radio or television station for information about closings. PERMANENT RECORDS The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized measurement of noncredit course work. One CEU (1.0) may be awarded for each ten hours of participation in an approved program. We keep a permanent record of participation in selected programs, issue a certificate to acknowledge successful completion of the program, and provide official transcripts to you or your employer. All requests for transcripts must be in writing. FUNDING OPTIONS The Department of Veterans Affairs approves many of our certificate courses for VA education benefits.
