Welcome from School of Music

The mission of the School of Music is to grow artistry, build community and advance distinction. The school achieves these three pillars of artistry, community and distinction by fostering an environment in which individual achievement and artistic expression thrive fully and equitably for our diverse students. Our degree programs and curriculum offer preparation for careers in music, music education or further graduate study. Our artist-teachers are professional musicians and academics who offer instruction in all aspects of music: theory, composition, musicianship, history, literature, performance and music education. The School of Music has been fully and continuously accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1966.

The faculty and students in the School of Music share a deep passion for and common desire to achieve excellence in music. The school offers a wide spectrum of degree programs and options with an overall emphasis in musical performance. The curriculum provides comprehensive preparation for careers in music, music education, or further graduate study, and is designed to provide a balanced education in the many facets of musical experience. Artist-teachers offer instruction in all aspects of performance; practicing composers and theorists teach courses in theory and composition; active musicologists provide instruction in history and literature; and specialists in music education teach the courses in that field. It is the goal of the department to develop each student’s musical and intellectual potential to the highest level of individual capability. California State University, Fullerton has been fully and continuously accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1966.

Sincerely,

Hoang Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American concert pianist, jazz musician, and college instructor in Orange County, California. He received a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Claremont Graduate University, and currently teaches applied music, class piano, and keyboard harmonization at Santa Ana College since 2013.

Hoang performed internationally as soloist at prestigious venues such as Cite des Arts in Paris, Basilica de St. Pedro in Perugia, Hanoi Opera House, Musco Performing Arts Center as well as in concerts at the Brown Foundation Performing Arts Center in Houston, Chopin High School of the Arts in Bytom, Lausanne University, and Bangkok’s Goethe Institute. He was featured as soloist with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Perugia Il Solisti Orchestra, CSUF Symphony Orchestra, Fullerton College Symphony, Vietnamese-American Philharmonic, and Rio Hondo Symphony Orchestra. Passionate about chamber music and two-piano repertoire, he has collaborated with international artists such as Eduardo Delgado, Grace Fong, and Ning An.

Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, Hoang’s musical studies started at the National Music Academy, then at the age of 15 in France. He received diplomas from the Conservatory of Versailles (CRR de Versailles), Conservatory of Paris (CRR de Paris), Indiana University in Bloomington, and California State University, Fullerton. He won the CSUF concerto competition and was the finalist at the Liszt Los Angeles International Competition. Besides classical repertoire, he also studied jazz with Grammy-Award winning pianist Bill Cunliffe and performed at various jazz clubs in southern California.

Formed in 2021, the Cara Xu Piano Duo, featuring Cara Kim Ko and Xu Khuc, is known for their unique blend of improvised Christian contemporary music and classical pieces. With a passion for creativity and spirituality, their performances captivate audiences, offering a refreshing take on both genres. They were scouted to play for Sessions Live, created by Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora. The duo improvises four-hand piano music to spread inspiration, love, and hope. Their music is available on major streaming platforms, including Apple Music, YouTube, and Spotify. Follow the duo on Instagram @caraxupianoduo.

Pianists In Performance

(“PIP”) is an outreach program seeking community members with grand pianos, and people who want to hear them really played. Such enthusiasts become “PIP Hosts” and are matched with emerging young keyboard artists from CSUF, “PIP Artists.” Our artists are selected by audition and have repertoire ready to perform for you. Contact Dr. Rob Watson to learn how to join a growing number of service organizations, schools, and private homes throughout the southland who have already experienced the thrill of outstanding piano performance!
