Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.

I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”

When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. If you believe in their sparks of brilliance, please consider a donation of any amount to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

Gabriel Bianco

Gabriel Bianco is considered to be one of nowadays’s finest classical guitarists. He has won first prize in several international competitions, has performed in over fifty countries spanning every continent, and has recorded eight CDs.

Gabriel has performed in concert in prestigious venues such as the Théâtre du Châtelet, la Folle Nantes Day, the Radio-France Occitanie Festival, the International Festival of guitar in Paris, the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, the Luis Arango Auditorium in Bogota, the Central Conservatory of Beijing, the Musashino Art Center and the Yamaha Hall in Tokyo, the Kyiv Philharmonic, the Zurich Opera and the Lausanne Opera.

Gabriel has recorded two solo records, the first with the Naxos label in a Bach, Mertz & Koshkin programme then with the Ad Vitam Records label in Da Milano, Scarlatti, Regondi & Paganini programmes. He is very active in the creation of contemporary pieces.

Gabriel is passionate about chamber music. He has been a member of Quatuor Eclisses since its creation in 2012, for which he has composed many arrangements and has recorded four records with the Ad Vitam record label. He also performs with Marina Viotti (Mezzo-soprano), always with his arrangements of classical and popular music, whose record release is scheduled for April 2023 with the Aparté label. He has also made record dueting with oboist Michaela Hrabankova on the Ad Vitam label. He occasionally shares the stage with Edgar Moreau (cello), Maïté Louis (violin), Mathilde

Caldérini (flute), Lola Descours (bassoon), Kévin Amiel (tenor), Romuald Grimbert-Barré (violin). He has worked with Atanas Ourkouzounov, Sergio Assad, Karol Beffa, Orestis Kalampalikis, Matthieu Stefanelli, Jules Matton, Camille Pépin, Inès Halimi and Thomas Viloteau on the creation of new works for solo guitar or chamber music.

Born in 1988 in Paris, Gabriel started playing the guitar with his father. In 1997, he enrolled at the CNR (Conservatoire National de Région) in Paris in Ramon de Herrera’s class. He was in music-study until the baccalaureate. In 2005 he was unanimously admitted to the CNSMDP (National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris) where he joined Olivier Chassain’s class. He won his guitar prize in 2008 and his chamber music prize in 2015, both times with the congratulations of the jury.

Since 2018, Gabriel is Senior Docent at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He gives individual guitar lessons and directs the classical guitar section. He plays exclusively on Savarez strings.

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is an irreverent satire that skewers politics, social irresponsibility, and even musicals themselves. After a devastating 20-year drought, the government of a Gotham-like city has banned private toilets, forcing citizens to pay admission to a single, sinister company for one of life’s most basic needs. But a brave hero emerges and decides enough is enough and inspires the town to revolt along with him. Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown has been hailed for its modern wit, outrageous perspective, and cheeky send ups of the musical genre.
