Welcome to the College of the Arts 2024–2025 season – our first in three years where performing and visual arts programming will take place on one cohesive arts campus following the completion of the Visual Arts Modernization Project. We are thrilled you have joined us! As our visitors, you are part of our extended family of patrons, parents, friends, and fellow Titans, and we strive to reflect your stories and experiences in the programming we present.
To us, community engagement is more than just opening the doors of our performance and exhibition spaces and inviting you in; it’s about creating a space for dialogue through the work we share. This season, we are proud to bring you a slate of exhibitions, concerts, and performances that not only reflect our humanity but also have the power to transform how we see ourselves and others. In Theatre, “The Prom” opens the season with a joyful celebration of love and acceptance that follows teen Emma Nolan and her quest to attend the prom after she is disinvited for being gay. Will Emma get the prom she deserves? Next, Begovich Gallery presents four exhibitions to celebrate the public opening of Building G on November 2, including “Vitae: A New Generation” featuring CSUF visual arts alumni whose work explores self-discovery and issues of social justice. The following week, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra, along with guest artists Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, perform in “Fullerton Pops!” Our award-winning choreographers and dancers take the stage in December for “Fall Dance Theatre,” a powerfully moving collection of performances in a variety of dance styles. And don’t forget everyone’s holiday concert favorite, “Deck the Hall at Cal State Fullerton!” on December 14 and 15.
With the completion of the Visual Arts complex this past summer, we are one of the largest comprehensive colleges of the arts in the CSU system. The complex boasts digitally enhanced classrooms, a green screen lab for film and animation, an expanded photography studio, four art galleries, and several indoor and outdoor spaces to encourage cross-disciplinary exploration. But with the distinction of being a large college of the arts comes great need, and many of our students face personal and financial challenges that prevent them from continuing their education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides our students with funding for immersive, off- and on-campus experiences that contribute to their academic success, including CSU Summer Arts, conferences, and study abroad programs. Denis Bouriakov, flute
Established as one of the world’s foremost flutists, Denis Bouriakov has been a prizewinner at numerous international flute competitions. Since 2015, he has served as Principal Flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, appointed by Gustavo Dudamel, following his tenure as Principal Flutist of the Metropolitan Opera under James Levine. Denis has also been a dedicated educator, teaching at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music (2017-2024) and serving as a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, his alma mater. In 2022, he was named Guest Professor at Elizabeth University in Hiroshima, Japan.
Balancing both solo and orchestral careers, Denis regularly performs concertos and recitals worldwide. He has collaborated as a soloist with many prominent conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Daniel Harding, and Gustavo Dudamel. He has made numerous recordings with piano and orchestras and has a strong online presence on social media, with hundreds of high-quality videos of his live performances available. With his phenomenal virtuoso technique and musicianship, Denis looks beyond the standard flute repertoire for works that allow the flute to shine, continually transcribing and performing violin and cello concertos and sonatas, thereby expanding the limits of flute technique and artistry. Many of his arrangements have been published by Theodore Presser, with more underway.
Qiaochu Li, piano
After successfully completing her higher education at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and earning the Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, as well as three Master’s degrees from the UDK Berlin and the CNSM Paris under the guidance of professors Jacques Rouvier, Françoise Thinat, Anne le Bozec, Erika Guiomar, and Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, Qiaochu Li won several international competitions, including the Lisma International Competition in New York and the Asia Piano Open in Hong Kong.
Since then, Qiaochu has flourished in a career as a soloist and chamber musician in Europe, the United States, and Asia, performing in prestigious venues such as the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Radio France, Salle Gaveau, La Seine Musicale, the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, and the San Diego Music Hall, alongside distinguished partners such as Lambert Wilson, Gérard Poulet, Jean Ferrandis, Pene Pati, Sébastien Guèze, and Ambroisine Bré, with whom she won the Grand Prix at the International Nadia and Lili Boulanger Competition.
Qiaochu has recorded an album of melodies with Sébastien Guèze, as well as another dedicated to Augusta Holmès, with soprano Aurélie Loilier, under the Maguelone label. In parallel, she maintains an active career as a vocal coach. She regularly collaborates with the Aix-en-Provence International Festival, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Royal Opera of Versailles, the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier, the Royaumont Foundation, and more.
In addition to her artistic activities, Qiaochu teaches at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) of Boulogne-Billancourt.
Jean Ferrandis, flute
French soloist and conductor Jean Ferrandis enjoys an international career that takes him throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. He has presented recitals, performed chamber music, and appeared as a soloist with orchestras in such prestigious concert halls as the Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Tapei Arts Center, Wigmore Hall in London, La Fenice in Venice, Hamarikyu Hall in Tokyo, the Vigado in Budapest, the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, and the Moscow Tschaikovsky Conservatory, under such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Tibor Varga, Laurent Petitgirard, and Yoram David. He has been invited to numerous festivals, including the Lanaudière in Canada, Switzerland’s Sion Festival, the Budapest Spring Festival, the Midem Festival in Cannes, and the Berlioz Festival in Lyon. Chamber music collaborators have included Gidon Kremer, Ivry Gitlis, Jean Philippe Collard, and Emile Naoumoff. His appearances at the 2006 National Flute Association convention in Pittsburgh, an event attended by three thousand flutists, included gala headliner concert in Heinz Hall and a master class.
In addition to his performing career, Jean serves as professor at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and at Californian State University, Fullerton. He regularly presents master classes in Japan (Toho University), the United States (Juilliard School, Rice University etc…), Europe (Royal College of London, Moscow Conservatoire etc…), Australia, Taiwan, and Korea, and has also appeared in South Africa. As a conductor he leads the Saint Petersburg Camerata in Russia and in Vilnius (Lithuania) the Saint Christopher Chamber Orchestra, with which he has recorded flute concertos of C. P. E. Bach. Other compact discs include Mozart’s complete flute concertos (with Marie-Pierre Langlamet, solo harpist of the Berlin Philharmonic), works of Honegger and d’Indy, Schubert’s sonatinas and the “Arpeggione” sonata, and a two-disc set of works for flute by Yuko Uebayashi.
Jean unanimously received his first prize from the Lyon Conservatoire, where he studied with Maxence Larrieu. A prize winner at such international competitions as Munich, Maria Canals in Barcelona, and Young Concert Artists in New York, he was awarded the grand prize at the 1986 Prague Spring Festival International Flute Competition. Leonard Bernstein was so impressed by his performance of the adagio from Mozart’s D major concerto that he remarked “It is Pan himself!” and subsequently composed a cadenza for him.
