Welcome to the College of the Arts 2024–2025 season – our first in three years where performing and visual arts programming will take place on one cohesive arts campus following the completion of the Visual Arts Modernization Project. We are thrilled you have joined us! As our visitors, you are part of our extended family of patrons, parents, friends, and fellow Titans, and we strive to reflect your stories and experiences in the programming we present.

To us, community engagement is more than just opening the doors of our performance and exhibition spaces and inviting you in; it’s about creating a space for dialogue through the work we share. This season, we are proud to bring you a slate of exhibitions, concerts, and performances that not only reflect our humanity but also have the power to transform how we see ourselves and others. In Theatre, “The Prom” opens the season with a joyful celebration of love and acceptance that follows teen Emma Nolan and her quest to attend the prom after she is disinvited for being gay. Will Emma get the prom she deserves? Next, Begovich Gallery presents four exhibitions to celebrate the public opening of Building G on November 2, including “Vitae: A New Generation” featuring CSUF visual arts alumni whose work explores self-discovery and issues of social justice. The following week, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra, along with guest artists Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, perform in “Fullerton Pops!” Our award-winning choreographers and dancers take the stage in December for “Fall Dance Theatre,” a powerfully moving collection of performances in a variety of dance styles. And don’t forget everyone’s holiday concert favorite, “Deck the Hall at Cal State Fullerton!” on December 14 and 15.

With the completion of the Visual Arts complex this past summer, we are one of the largest comprehensive colleges of the arts in the CSU system. The complex boasts digitally enhanced classrooms, a green screen lab for film and animation, an expanded photography studio, four art galleries, and several indoor and outdoor spaces to encourage cross-disciplinary exploration. But with the distinction of being a large college of the arts comes great need, and many of our students face personal and financial challenges that prevent them from continuing their education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides our students with funding for immersive, off- and on-campus experiences that contribute to their academic success, including CSU Summer Arts, conferences, and study abroad programs. Your support is not just appreciated; it is vital. If the arts and their continued importance in higher education are essential to you, please consider a gift of any amount to the Dean’s Fund today.

I thank you for joining us and for championing the arts in our community. Your support means the world to me and to our students. When you return, I invite you to visit the Visual Arts complex to see what’s new and to check out the galleries in Building G, across from Clayes Performing Arts Center and open late on select performance nights beginning in November. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

PROGRAM

In 1998, he transferred to Oberlin Conservatory of Music and continued his cello study with Professor Andor Toth Jr. During the three-year study in Oberlin, he was the principal cellist of Oberlin Symphony Orchestra.

He performed at the International Orchestra Institute in Austria, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany and Palm Beach Chamber Music Festival in Florida.

Yue joined the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra in September, 2001; he was appointed Assistant Principal Cello during his second season with the orchestra. He was also performing regularly with the Palm Beach Opera, Atlantic Classic Orchestra, Miami City Ballet and Symphony of America. From 2004-2008, Yue was the Principal Cello of Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra and Co-Principal cello of Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia. In June 2008, he won the international audition of the SubPrincipal Cello of RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Yue has shared the stage with artists such like Mstislav Rostropovich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domigo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Lang Lang, Sir. James Galway, Joseph Silerstein, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zubin Mehta, Lalo Schifrin, John Williams, Bryn Terfel, Angela Gheorghiu and many more. His solo cello album “Variations on Cello” was well received by public and has been played regularly on RTÉ Lyric FM. He has also made his TV appearance on RTÉ One reality show “Instrumental” in 2012 as cello tutor and solo cello performance on “Dancing with the stars” in 2019 and 2023 and Flora’s commercial in 2023.

Since 2015, Yue has been acting Section Leader cello of RTÉ Concert Orchestra and has led the section in its first China Tour in 2017. In April 2024, he was appointed Associate Principal Cello of the orchestra.

Greenhouse Cello Foundation

The Greenhouse Cello Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was established in Beverly Hills, California, in 2008.

With Bongshin Ko as its president, it includes officers and a board of directors of distinguished musicians and educators from the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The Foundation’s mission is to discover and support

young talents, research and promote less-known cello music, pass on the legacy of the Casals and Greenhouse schools, and according to Bernard Greenhouse, “bring all cellists and cello lovers from around the world together.”

For contributions and donations please contact David Vigus, Secretary, at dvvigus@gmail.com

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Hailed by critics for her “most perfect playing” (Internet Cello Society) with “great warmth and beauty” (The STRAD), cellist Bongshin Ko has appeared worldwide as a soloist with such groups as Munich Chamber Players, Television and Radio Symphony of Moscow, the KBS Korean Broadcasting Symphony, Zagreb Philharmonic, and Central Broadcasting Symphony of China. In 1992 she was honored to be the first Korean artist to be invited to perform in China after the historic resumption of diplomatic relations between Korea and China, and has since been invited back annually.

Ko has collaborated with some of the world’s greatest artists including Mstislav Rostropovich, Bernard Greenhouse, Sir Georg Solti, Leonard Stein, Gunther Schuller, Semyon Bychkov and Valery Gergiev. In 1997 she appeared with the Korean Symphony at Seoul International Music Festival to give the Asian premiere of Bernard Rands’ Cello Concerto, composed and dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich in celebration of his 70th birthday. Other international music events and festivals welcomed her to Schleswig-Holstein festival, Kronberg Cello festival, Berlin Wall 10th anniversary concert, Rostropovich & Friends Concert (Germany), plus numerous others in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, Poland, Russia, Monaco, Croatia, USA, Korea, China, Japan, and Indonesia.

As a recipient of over 30 international prizes and awards, including the highest performance award in her native Korea and the Crossroad Award in the US for her “superior teaching,” she is on popular demand as a teacher as well as a performer around the globe. Serving as the President of Bernard Greenhouse Foundation as well as Cello Professor and Assistant Director at Cal State Univ. Fullerton School of Music, she performs tirelessly at major venues and concert halls throughout four continents.
