WELCOME Hello, and welcome to the School of Music’s virtual encore presentation of two past University Symphony Orchestra performances: Concerto for Clarinet by Artie Shaw featuring 2020 Concerto-Aria Competition winner Spencer Danielson; and

Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait narrated by CSUF’s own President Fram Virjee. We are so excited to share these performance with you! First, I want to thank all of the students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to make this possible. As our college continues to rise to the challenges of these times, our performing arts students thrive, delivering some of the most heartfelt and thought-provoking performances of their academic careers. We are demonstrating one thing loud and clear: the arts are active, vibrant, and resilient here at Cal State Fullerton. Just as the arts continue to adapt and evolve, so are our students. These Titans of the Arts – unwavering in their passion and commitment to their craft – are the reason we do what we do as educators, administrators, and staff. I look forward to seeing theatre, dance, and music students rehearsing throughout the performing arts building, and visual arts students creating in the breezeways and art courtyard once again. It’s so quiet here without them! Until we see each other again face-toface, stay safe and stay strong. We hope you enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Dale A. Merrill Dean, College of the Arts

PROGRAM

Concerto for Clarinet ARTIE SHAW (1910-2004)

Spencer Danielson, clarinet Overall Grand-Prize Winner of the 2019 Music Associates Concerto-Aria Competition University Symphony Orchestra Lincoln Portrait

AARON COPLAND (1900-1990)

Framroze Virjee, narrator

PROGRAM NOTES

Concerto for Clarinet ARTIE SHAW Artie Shaw’s Concerto for Clarinet for clarinet and jazz orchestra is a “pastiche thrown together out of some boogie-woogie blues, clarinet-over-tom tom interludes, a commonplace riff build-up towards the end, all encased in opening and closing virtuoso cadenzas for the leader’s clarinet,” according to Gunther Schuller. The piece ends with a “legendary” altissimo C. Before his enlisted service in World War II, Artie Shaw was tasked with providing music for the movie Second Chorus which featured Fred Astaire. The film proved to be a failure, but Shaw extracted one of his works from the soundtrack, the Swing Concerto, and reworked it into his Concerto for Clarinet in 1940.

Lincoln Portrait AARON COPLAND

One of Copland’s most popular pieces, Lincoln Portrait was

commissioned during the early years of the War by conductor Andre Kostelanetz for a program of three new works by American composers. Copland chose excerpts from Lincoln’s own words for the narration. The score includes quotations of Springfield Mountain and Camptown Races. According to Copland, “I hoped to suggest something of the mysterious sense of fatality that surrounds Lincoln’s personality. The challenge was to compose something simple, yet interesting enough to fit Lincoln.” The piece has been performed on many significant occasions and with innumerable narrators, among them Carl Sandburg, William Warfield, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Copland himself.

Fram and his wife, Julie, are co-founders of Yambi Rwanda, a nonprofit 501(c)3 dedicated to improving the lives of Rwandans through the sustained provision of basic human needs along with equitable access to quality education. A first-generation college student, Fram received his J.D. from the University of California, Hasting College of Law in 1985; and his bachelor of arts degree in political science and sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1982.
