Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.

I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”

When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. If you believe in their sparks of brilliance, please consider a donation of any amount to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

Enrico Elisi established himself as one of the most passionate Italian pianists on the concert scene today and has been hailed for his mastery of elegance, refinement, and fantasy (La Nueva España). He regularly performs to acclaim throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia and his interpretations reveal “remarkable sensitivity, imagination, and polish” (Baltimore Sun). He has appeared in historical settings such as La Fenice Theatre, Venice; Palazzo Vecchio, Florence; Bibiena Theatre, Mantua; and Pavarotti Opera House, Modena. Recent engagements include the Banff Centre for the Arts, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York Public Library, New York’s Morgan Library, Washington’s National Gallery of Art, the Italian Embassy, and the Centro Cultural de España in Lima, Peru. He performed with several orchestras in the US, Italy, and Portugal and as a chamber musician at the Taos and Ravinia Festivals. Several radio and TV programs in the US and Europe have broadcast Elisi’s recitals. A laureate of the Oporto International Competition and the Venice Competition, he also garnered many first prizes and successes in Italian competitions.

A champion of new music, Elisi has commissioned works from many composers and premiered Paul Chihara’s Two Images at Weill Hall (subsequently recorded for Albany Records). He recently released an album of Mozart Sonatas and shorter compositions, and a new recording of Bach’s selected Partitas and Preludes is forthcoming.

A recipient of the distinguished Faculty of Music Teaching Award at the University of Toronto, where he is an Associate Professor, Elisi was previously on the faculty of the Eastman School, among other institutions in the USA, Korea, and China. He conducted a myriad of master classes worldwide and is sought-after at many music festivals and as an adjudicator. He traces the rich roots of his musical tradition to the Conservatories of Bologna and Florence, the renowned Imola International Academy in Italy, and the Peabody Institute, in the US. His teachers included mentors such as Leon Fleisher, Lazar Berman, Alexander Lonquich, Boris Petrushansky, Franco Scala, and Giuseppe Fricelli. Elisi is a Steinway Artist and became a citizen of the United States of America in 2012.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

Chinese born British pianist

Mengyang Pan began her piano studies in China, eventually becoming a junior student at the Central Conservatory of Music Beijing. Having been offered a full scholarship, she accepted an invitation to study at the Purcell School in the UK before completing her musical education at the Royal College of Music, London. A brilliantly decorated star, Pan is the prize winner of many prestigious competitions including Rina Sala Gallo International Piano competition, Bromsgrove International Young Musician’s Platform, Dudley International Piano Competition, Norah Sands Award, MBF Educational Award, Chappell Gold Medal, Brent International Piano Competition and Ettlingen International Piano Competition.

Famed for her graceful charm and wonderful communicative stage presence, Pan performs repeatedly in some of the best venues throughout the UK such as the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, St. John’s Smith Square and Royal Albert Hall amongst many others.

As an engaging and inspiring collaborator, Pan has appeared with many orchestras and her collaboration with conductors such as Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy, John Wilson and Mikk Murdvee has gained the highest acclaim nationwide. She was presented with the Tagore Gold Medal by HRH Prince Charles in 2007 for outstanding representation of the Royal College of Music, the highest honour possible. In 2011, she was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace for her contribution to the British music and art industry.

Apart from performing, Pan is also passionate about teaching. She is currently a professor of piano at Royal College of Music, Imperial College Blyth Centre for Music and Visual Arts and St Paul’s School for boys. She also gives regular masterclasses at schools including the Purcell School, Imperial College, St Paul’s School and her native China, events which are greeted with considerable critical acclaim.

Pianists In Performance (“PIP”) is an outreach program seeking community members with grand pianos, and people who want to hear them really played. Such enthusiasts become “PIP Hosts” and are matched with emerging young keyboard artists from CSUF, “PIP Artists.”

Our artists are selected by audition and have repertoire ready to perform for you.
