Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.
I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”
When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. If you believe in their sparks of brilliance, please consider a donation of any amount to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence.
Thank you again for joining us this season and for championing the arts in higher education. I hope to see you at one of the college’s many performances and events this spring.
Sincerely,
Arnold Holland, EdD Dean, College of the Arts

LATIN ENSEMBLE
Teryn Ré
Deriving influences from jazz artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ella Fitzgerald, Teryn Ré has developed her own unique sound which she enjoys sharing in both her performing and teaching. She performs regularly with her big band (The Teryn Ré Big Band), small band, and duo in local L.A. jazz clubs such as The Baked Potato, the Blue Whale, and O.C. venues such as Campus Jax. Recently she has performed regularly at the new club, the Jazz Lounge, in San Diego, as well as the 1905 in Portland, OR. She has released several albums, including her self-titled “The Teryn Ré Big Band” album, a chord-less trio album, and several singer/songwriter albums.
Although Teryn loves performing, she loves teaching at the college level and encouraging students to pursue their own sound. She currently teaches at Fullerton College, Chapman University, Cal State Fullerton, and El Camino College. Other schools include Azusa Pacific University, Golden West College, Cerritos College, Citrus College, and the Orange County School of the Arts. She directs multiple vocal jazz ensembles, and teaches applied vocal jazz lessons at various schools.
Teryn looks forward to growing the Vocal Jazz Program at CSUF starting in the Fall of 2024!
Caroline Cavalche
Critically acclaimed pianist and composer Carolina Calvache has been engaging and evolving a global music exchange that extends from her native Cali, Colombia to New York City and throughout the world. A persistent and vital contributor to the New York scene for the past decade, she articulates spontaneous ideas as skillfully as she composes. Her body of work as both performer and composer reflects fearless inclusivity, often drawing inspiration from mingling and disparate traditions to carve out a unique space for her own sound.
Following her widely praised debut release Sotareño (Sunnyside, 2014)—that earned a spot among the Best 10 Albums of 2014 by Latin Jazz Network—Calvache unleashes the resonating extent of her talent as a composer, orchestrator and formidable songwriter on her sophomore album Vida Profunda, set for release in 2020. Tireless as a bandleader and a highly sought composer and orchestrator, she has headlined institutional venues that embrace both emerging talent and established artists, including The Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club Coca-cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Cell Theatre, Fat Cat and The Jazz Gallery.
Progressive art institutions frequently commission Calvache to compose and perform master-level projects for festivals and recordings. Past projects include pieces “Transitions” and “Encuentros” for the world premiere at the Trombone International Festival in 2018 and 2019. She also has crafted ambitious big band compositions as part of the prestigious BMI Jazz Workshop led by Jim McNeely. Her lastest commissions include a piano and tuba piece for Munich Philharmonic tubist Ricardo Carvalhoso and a piece for trumpet and piano for Philharmonic of Colombia trumpeter Juan Fernando Avedaño.

Francisco Torres
Francisco Torres is a well-respected trombonist, bass trombonist, educator, composer and arranger who hails from Hermosillo, Sonora. Born in 1974, he didn’t start his musical training until 15 years old, playing alto saxophone then switching to tuba and euphonium. By accident, he discovered jazz trombone while watching the jazz band practice before school. He was hooked.
Torres has emerged as a first-class arranger and composer, particularly in the field of Latin jazz. He has served as musical director, producer and arranger for the Grammy-winning percussionist Poncho Sanchez for 12 years. He is also a member of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, John Beasley’s Monkestra, Bill Cunliffe’s Bachannalia, and has performed or recorded with Arturo Sandoval, Bill Holman, Manhattan Transfer, Joey Defrancesco, Natalie Cole, Doc Severinsen, Sammy Nestico, and Terence Blanchard, as well as Santana, Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Mathis, Robbie Williams, and many others. Being known primarily as a studio and jazz trombonist, Torres has also excelled in the field of classical music. He can be heard as trombonist, bass trombonist and valve trombonist for Michael Giacchino on the Pixar film Coco Some of his most recent films credits are The Secret Life of Pets, Ice Age 4, Penguins of Madagascar, and Straight Outta Compton. On TV he can be heard on The Simpsons, Elena of Avalor, Sofia The First, and The Get Down, as well as many others. He regularly records trombone for orchestra shows and parades for Shanghai Disney, Tokyo Disney, Walt Disney World and Disneyland, and has recorded a multitude of musically diverse albums with major music stars including Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Dr. Dre, Michael Bublé, Frank Ocean, Pitbull, All American Rejects, Spoon, Angelique Kidjo, Ry Cooder, Brian Setzer, and Los Lobos.
