Welcome to the College of the Arts fall 2023 performing and visual arts season. I am so proud of the collaborative efforts our faculty, staff, and students have undertaken to produce such a wide array of programming across four disciplines. It takes months, sometimes years, of work to create what you are about to enjoy – a commitment matched only by our collective passion for the arts. Each year, the college presents a wide variety of programming that reflects our diverse perspectives. In Theatre, the season begins with a stage adaptation of the hauntingly emotional novel and film “Let the Right One In,” which reveals both the darkest impulses of humanity and our universal desire for connection. Acclaimed 1975 hit musical “A Chorus Line” gets a fresh update by Marty Austin Lamar and Courtney Ozovek that will immerse audiences in the audition process of a Broadway show. In the School of Music, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra perform together in the first ever “Fullerton Pops!” Also in November, Begovich Gallery explores the midcentury architecture and aesthetics of our original Visual Arts Complex in the exhibition “PAST FORWARD.” While Begovich Gallery looks back at our historical beginnings, we continue to push toward the future as the Visual Arts Modernization Project (VA MOD) rapidly transforms the campus. Our complex’s two new buildings are fully framed, architectural details have been installed, and extensive interior renovations on two existing buildings are nearing completion. These changes bring years of dreaming and planning into sharp focus, but there is so much work yet to be done. From exterior paint to integrate our past and present buildings, to restoring the beloved “Water Wall” sculpture, to new software that will power the next generation of digital artists, there are many ways you can make a difference. The ways in which our students will benefit from the modernization project are as limitless as their imaginations, and as assured as our commitment to their success. In the College of the Arts, we measure student achievement in creativity, artistic integrity, and dedication, not in data points or statistics. ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

Femi Knight Femi Knight is a creative visionary who is dedicated to enriching the lives of all people through Music, encouraging hope through diversity and promoting the gift of creative expression everywhere. One of Los Angeles’ most prominent vocalists; who has worked alongside the Music Industry’s most well-known musicians, artists, actors, choreographers, and record producers. History includes performances with Brian McKnight, Carl Anderson, Harvey Mason, Abraham Laboriel, Jimmy Branly, Otmaro Ruiz, Phil Upchurch, Michael Paulo, Bill Cunliffe, Ledisi, Shirley Caesar, John Legend, Englebert Humperdinck, Deniece Williams, Eddie Harris, Howard Hewett, Jorge Ben Jor, India.Arie, Don Grusin, Ray Brown Jr., the Black-Eyed Peas, and Sergio Mendes. Tours and appearances as a solo artist include the National Arts Center (Ottawa, Canada), Playboy Jazz Festival 2002, CBC radio, and the Palm Spring Women’s Jazz Festival. Also, Mrs. Knight has provided vocals for film, television shows, and commercials. Born and raised in South Florida, she grew up in a home parented by classical musicians and educators.

ABOUT THE FACULT Y ARTIST

Jean Ferrandis Flautist and conductor Jean Ferrandis enjoys an international career that takes him throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. He has presented recitals, performed chamber music, and appeared as soloist with orchestras in such prestigious concert halls as the Salle Pleyel and Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Alice Tully Hall in New York, Tapei Arts Center, Wigmore Hall in London, La Fenice in Venice, Hamarikyu Hall in Tokyo, Vigado in Budapest, Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, and Moscow Tschaikovsky Conservatory, under such conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Tibor Varga, Laurent Petitgirard, and Yoram David. Ferrandis has been invited to numerous festivals, including the Lanaudière in Canada, Switzerland’s Sion Festival, the Budapest Spring Festival, the Midem Festival in Cannes, and the Berlioz Festival in Lyon. Chamber music collaborators have included Gidon Kremer, Ivry Gitlis, Jean Philippe Collard, and Emile Naoumoff. His appearances at the 2006 National Flute Association convention in Pittsburgh, an event attended by three thousand flutists, included a gala headliner concert in Heinz Hall and a master class.


ABOUT THE FACULT Y ARTIST

Kimo Furumoto Kimo Furumoto is the Orchestra Director at California State University, Fullerton. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra (West Virginia) as well as the Whittier Regional Symphony. His guest conducting appearances have taken him throughout the United States and Europe with many stellar orchestras. Previous positions include music director of the Concert Orchestra at the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, conducting assistant with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. He has worked with noted conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Robert Shaw. Furumoto holds degrees in conducting from Chapman University and the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music. His ballet “The Mandarin Ducks” has been enthusiastically received by audiences.

Bill Cunliffe Cal State Fullerton Professor of Music Bill Cunliffe is a jazz pianist, composer, Grammy Award-winning arranger and record producer. He is known for blending jazz with classical and pop genres based on a deep knowledge of, and a lively curiosity about, musical styles. As a solo artist and bandleader, he has more than a dozen albums to his name and has appeared on numerous recordings. He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and began piano lessons with his mother at the age of eight. At 20, having been captivated by the music of Oscar Peterson, he changed his focus from classical music to jazz. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he studied with jazz legend Mary Lou Williams. At the Eastman School of Music, he studied jazz piano with Bill Dobbins and arranging with Rayburn Wright. In 1989, he won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Cunliffe began his career as pianist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson and James Moody. Later he toured and recorded with the Clayton Brothers and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, drummer Joe La Barbera, trumpeter Terell Stafford and jazz flutist Holly Hofmann. Cunliffe’s score for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 2011 documentary “On the Shoulders of Giants” received two NAACP nominations for Outstanding Album and Outstanding Group or Duo Collaboration. In 2009, he was awarded a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement and has received four other Grammy nominations including two for Best Instrumental Composition. The Los Angeles Jazz Society honored Cunliffe in 2010 with its Composer/ Arranger Award. In addition to teaching full time, Cunliffe is a longtime faculty member of the Skidmore Jazz Institute and the Vail Jazz Workshop.
