Welcome to the Spring 2024 Performing Arts Season at Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts. Whether you are a first-time or long-time patron, a friend, or parent to one of our exceptional students, thank you for joining us. Your support makes all the difference to their success.

I am pleased to present another semester of programming powered by the incredible gifts of our Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre students. This spring, the School of Music starts the season with a trio of concerts February 16–18 by artists-in-residence Talich Quartet; faculty artist Damon Zick and his Quarteto Nuevo featuring fellow faculty artist Bill Cunliffe; and University Symphony Orchestra. In May, University Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus will close the concert season with a performance of Mozart’s emotionally charged “Requiem.” Begovich Gallery presents the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series with visiting artists’ talks throughout the semester, including multidisciplinary artist Hings Lim on February 22, whose work will also be exhibited at Grand Central Art Center. The Department of Theatre and Dance begins their season in March with “Marisol,” a darkly comedic fantasy where the title character must find hope in a post-apocalyptic Brooklyn where angels are taking up arms and coffee is extinct. Hilarious, multiple Tony award-winning modern musical send-up “Urinetown” closes the theatre season just as CSUF’s dancers and choreographers take to the stage for “Spring Dance Theatre.”

When our students demonstrate their talents on stage and in the studio, their creative energy is undeniable, but the sacrifice and struggle it took to get there is often less perceptible. We can’t see the hours spent creating, the days of rehearsals, and the years of practice. For many students, the sparks of innovation and artistry that drove them to pursue the arts are often diminished by the high cost of an education. The Dean’s Fund for Excellence provides support for students in need through scholarships, artist residencies, and other financial assistance, ensuring them the opportunity to thrive in the arts. ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST

Hasse Borup is Professor of violin and Head of String and Chamber Music Studies at the University of Utah School of Music.

Hasse has released recordings on Centaur, Naxos and Innova Labels: complete works for violin by Vincent Persichetti (Naxos 8.559725), the complete sonatas by the Danish romantic composer Niels W. Gade (Naxos 8.570524), and American Fantasies (Centaur 2918) both to critical acclaim (“Interpretative Empathy and Watertight Ensemble” – The Strad; “Landmark CD” –Musicweb; “Seamless playing” – allmusic.com). Tower of the Eight Winds, a CD on the Innova Label, featuring the complete works for violin by American composer Judith Shatin, was described by Fanfare Magazine as “..being played with superb agility by the Borup/Ernst Duo.”

Solo appearances include Vienna, Beijing, Washington DC, Venice, Cremona, Paris, Copenhagen and Miami. Hasse was a founding member of the award-winning Coolidge Quartet, serving as the first ever Guarneri-Fellowship Quartet at University of Maryland. He has performed live on National Danish Radio, National Slovenian Radio, National Australian Radio, Radio Hong Kong, and has been featured on NPR’s “Performance Today.” In addition to numerous other prestigious prizes and fellowships, Hasse was the only Dane to win the International Yamaha Music Prize.

Hasse’s main teachers were Arnold Steinhardt, Philip Setzer, David Takeno, Almita Vamos, David Salness and Peder Elbaek. He also worked extensively with The Guarneri, Emerson and Juilliard Quartets, Isaac Stern, Bill Preucil and Hatto Beyerle. He has earned degrees in violin performance from the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, the Hartt School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Maryland. He plays a copy of the Plowden Del gesu made by Samuel Zygmuntowicz and a copy of the Soil Strad made by Ryan Soltis.

ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST

Violinist Ernest Salem is Professor of Music at California State University, Fullerton. He is also Area Coordinator for the String area at CSUF. He has performed in concerts and recitals across the United States and presented master classes at various universities, colleges and arts schools. Former university affiliations include appointments as a faculty member at Wichita State University, the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and New Mexico State University.

Active as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles Area, Salem has performed with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Orchestra, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, Asia American Orchestra and South Coast Symphony. Formerly Concertmaster of the Wichita and Las Cruces Symphonies, he has also served as Principal Second of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Texas Chamber and Texas Opera Theater Orchestras.

As a chamber musician, Salem has been violinist with California State University, Fullerton’s Premiere Trio, first violinist with Wichita State’s Fairmount Quartet, a member of the College of St. Benedict’s Chamber Ensemble “Pastiche,” and violinist with New Mexico State’s Delphian Trio. He currently performs regularly as a chamber musician throughout Southern California.

Salem holds degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Houston and the University of Minnesota. Included among his teachers are Yfrah Neaman, Fredell Lack, and members of the Juilliard Quartet. In addition to performance activities, he has been published in the American String Teachers’ Journal and the Long Island Historical Journal.
