Welcome to the College of the Arts Spring 2025 Season. As we come together to enjoy incredible art, dance, music and theatre programming from across the college, I know we are all still reeling from the recent fires that tore through the communities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. In many ways, we are all Angelenos and when our city breaks, we break. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are finding comfort in processing complex thoughts and emotions the only way we know how: through the arts. It is our calling and what ties us to our community. Through our programming, we hope to provide a bit of respite to all of you during this time of regrouping and rebuilding.

In the College of the Arts, every note, every movement, and every word spoken on stage brings opportunity for discovery and connection. Whether you are a fellow Titan, family member, or community supporter, we are thrilled to have you here. You are now part of something much larger than this single performance. You are joining a vibrant and diverse collective of artists and technicians working together to push the boundaries of their craft.

Spring 2025 brings us a season of fresh programming to challenge our perceptions and immerse us in new perspectives. Later this month, the School of Music presents “Hajar,” a contemporary opera synthesizing ancient Jewish and Islamic stories into a modern immigration tale. Theatre begins their season with “Significant Other,” a heartfelt tale of love and longing in 21st century New York City. If you haven’t yet seen our spectacular new gallery building, make time to see “Chris O’Leary: Gravity Well” – an exploration of the cosmic phenomena of gravitational waves using video, sound, and images. In May, our dancers and choreographers return to the intimate Hallberg Theatre in “Spring Dance Theatre: From All Sides,” where viewers will experience a variety of dance forms from every angle of the stage.

It takes more than just the emotional support of friends, family, professors, and mentors to enable students to take creative risks of expression. As a college, we remain committed to providing these aspiring arts professionals with scholarships, financial assistance, and the industry-ready equipment, facilities, and opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom. Our resolve is steadfast, but we need your continued support to sustain and expand our educational mission, ensuring our students have the tools necessary to succeed. 4+9

ERIC CHA-BEACH

4+9 was written for the So Percussion Summer Institute 2017. The piece explores all the ways that a bar of 9/4 can be subdivided: There are 36 sixteenth notes in the bar (9 beats x 4 sixteenth notes per beat) - and 36 can be divided evenly by 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, and 18. The various combinations of different overlapping divisions in the bar make the underlying groupings of 16th notes constantly sound different. I used this basic idea in a piece for So Percussion’s project ‘A Gun Show’ in 2016, but 4+9 explores simply the pure process of hearing each possible combination in turn.

Taxidermy

Why “Taxidermy?” I just find the word strangely compelling, and it evokes something grand, awkward, epic, silent, funny, and just a bit creepy—all characteristics of this piece, in a way. The repeated phrase toward the end (“the detail of the pattern is movement”) is a little concept I love trying (and failing) to imagine. It comes from T.S. Eliot’s beautiful and perplexing “Burnt Norton” (from the Four Quartets), and I’ve used it before in other work—as a kind of whimsical existentialist mantra.

Future of Anonymity

PAULINE OLIVEROS

Pauline Oliveros’ life as a composer, performer and humanitarian was about opening her own and others’ sensibilities to the universe and facets of sounds. Her career spanned fifty years of boundary dissolving music making. In the ‘50s she was part of a circle of iconoclastic composers, artists, poets gathered in San Francisco. In the 1960’s she influenced American music profoundly through her

work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual.

This is my contemporary offering of Koreduga played on modern drums and wood. This complex rhythm derived from the Koreduga rhythm, is my favorite triplet from the Mandingo empire.

Dusty road to Dolo

OLIVIER TARPAGA

The sound of the Lobi and Djan’s balafon, my grandmother’s guinea fowls climbing the baobab tree, the smell of boiling millet beer, the rooster crowing at 5 am. The melody of this song is inspired by my childhood trips to the small village of Dolo in the West of Burkina Faso with Jeanne, my dear mother.

Go Placidly with Haste

As with my earlier work, Amid the Noise, Go Placidly with Haste is inspired by The Desiderata, Max Ehrman’s secular prayer of the early 1920’s. The first line of the poem, “Go placidly amid the noise and haste,” still resonates in many aspects of my life and it has continued to be a touchstone of my music making.

The work is made up of several smaller movements that can be combined in any way the performers like and played on any instruments the performers choose.

There are three types of music in this set. The bulk of the movements are ensemble pieces that ask the performers to become a part of the orchestration process. Four movements are written as virtuosic solo movements that can also be played in other forms if the performers

wish. These movements bring a different energy, perhaps some haste, to some of the other more placid movements. And the third type of music provides a refrain of sorts that can be sewn throughout the set of music. This piece, titled Desiderata, asks the performers to read the poem silently to themselves and organizes the sounds around different highlighted phrases or words.

spatialized even further as a ‘star map’ of a sonic mandala over the entire space of the concert hall, or performance space. A layered version of this work incorporates a choir of voices overlaying another poem by Sara Teasdale “There will be rest.”

There Will Be Stars

There will be stars (for Pauline Oliveros) PAMELA MADSEN

This work was originally commissioned in honor of composer Pauline Oliveros, as a surprise gift to her for her 85th birthday on May 30th, 2017, by McGill University. Perhaps sadly synchronistic, I completed this whole work on Thanksgiving day, November 24th, 2016, the day Pauline passed away, not knowing she had passed--so had to alter the “star map” dates that create the pitches that correspond to her date of birth/death, and connect with the dates that correspond to my birth date and other significant pitch/ date mappings.

This work is inspired by Pauline’s Sonic Mandala Compositional work, similar to her work Rose Moon, and was also composed during my work with Pauline this past year in Deep Listening. The work is for multiple performers, percussionists, instrumentalists, and wandering spoken voice(s)-for as many other players that would like to be “stars,” independent satellites, to perform the layers of the work. The work can also be

This work is part of my large-scale multi-movement multi-media work “There will come soft rains” for percussion, spoken voice, solo cello and electronics, string quartet, and projected images commissioned by Cory Hills, solo percussion/ spoken voice, Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, cellist Ashley Bathgate, Eclipse String Quartet and others. I am composer in residence amongst the remains of the utopian beach-front Artist colony of Crystal Cove State Park, the ruins of the mid-century utopian oasis: ZZYZX, which now houses the Desert Studies Center in the Mojave National Preserve to create, document sounds, and present performances of this work.

The current season hears Sō and Caroline Shaw perform a program highlighting their newest album, Rectangles and Circumstance, at the Barbican in London, the BOZAR in Brussels, Saffron Hall in Essex, and at 92NY in New York City. Recent Sō highlights have included performances at Carnegie Hall, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Big Ears, Cal Performances, at the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Penn Live Arts in Philadelphia, the Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa, the Oklahoma Philharmonic, the Library of Congress, touring Benin and

Burkina Faso with Olivier Tarpaga, and more.

In addition to Rectangles and Circumstances, their recent albums with Caroline Shaw include Let the Soil Play its Simple Part; and the Grammy-award winning Narrow Sea with Dawn Upshaw and Gilbert Kalish, all on Nonesuch Records. Other recent albums include an acclaimed version of Julius Eastman’s Stay On It, and Darian Donovan Thomas’s Individuate. This adds to a catalog of more than twenty-five albums featuring landmark recordings of works by Steve Reich, Steven Mackey, David Lang, and many others.

In Fall 2024, Sō Percussion began its eleventh year as the Edward T. Cone performers-in-residence at Princeton University. Rooted in the belief that music is an elemental form of human communication, and galvanized by forces for social change, Sō enthusiastically pursues a range of social and community outreach through their nonprofit umbrella, including partnerships with local ensembles including Brooklyn’s Pan in Motion; their Sō Laboratories concert series; a studio residency program in Brooklyn; fundraising for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen; and the Sō Percussion Summer Institute, an intensive two-week chamber music seminar for percussionists and composers.
