Welcome from School of Music
The mission of the School of Music is to grow artistry, build community and advance distinction. The school achieves these three pillars of artistry, community and distinction by fostering an environment in which individual achievement and artistic expression thrive fully and equitably for our diverse students. Our degree programs and curriculum offer preparation for careers in music, music education or further graduate study. Our artist-teachers are professional musicians and academics who offer instruction in all aspects of music: theory, composition, musicianship, history, literature, performance and music education. The School of Music has been fully and continuously accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1966.
The faculty and students in the School of Music share a deep passion for and common desire to achieve excellence in music. The school offers a wide spectrum of degree programs and options with an overall emphasis in musical performance. The curriculum provides comprehensive preparation for careers in music, music education, or further graduate study, and is designed to provide a balanced education in the many facets of musical experience. Artist-teachers offer instruction in all aspects of performance; practicing composers and theorists teach courses in theory and composition; active musicologists provide instruction in history and literature; and specialists in music education teach the courses in that field. It is the goal of the department to develop each student’s musical and intellectual potential to the highest level of individual capability. California State University, Fullerton has been fully and continuously accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1966.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST
Kirsten Yon is Associate Professor of Violin and Chair of the String Division at the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Her active solo career includes recital engagements and masterclasses throughout the United States (including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall), Brazil, Czech Republic, England, South Korea, Honduras, Mexico, Germany, France, Iceland, and Norway.
Previously on the faculty of Texas Tech University, Yon additionally taught for many years at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the International Music Academy Pilsen (Czech Republic), the Nathan Schwartzman String Festival (Uberlândia, Brazil), and the Cambridge International String Academy (England).
A versatile orchestral musician, Yon held concertmaster chairs with the Bayou City Chamber Orchestra, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Caprock Pro Musica Sinfonietta, Ballet Lubbock, and the Cypress Symphony, as well as performing with diverse ensembles that include the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO), Aperio, the baroque ensemble Ars Lyrica, and the contemporary Musiqa ensemble. Currently she serves as concertmaster of the Shreveport Symphony (Louisiana) under the baton of Michael Butterman. As a lauded chamber musician, she founded the Champlain Piano Trio, the Archiano Ensemble, the Karlin Trio, and the Botticelli String Quartet.
Dedicated to musical outreach at both the community and international levels, Yon is founder and Artistic Director of Encuentro de Cuerdas, a string festival in Tegucigalpa, Honduras that is approaching its twentieth year. Since the beginning of her professional teaching career, students from both her college and pre-college studios have won numerous competitions and awards and been awarded placement in top conservatories and universities.
A frequent masterclass clinician across the world, Yon has spent recent summers teaching and performing at the Texas Music Festival, ARIA International Summer Academy (Massachusetts), Cedar Valley Chamber Music (Iowa), the Naolinco International Music Festival (Mexico), and the Liberec International Violin Academy (Czech Republic). Her major teachers and influences included Kathleen Winkler, David Updegraff, William Preucil, and Raphael Fliegel. Her debut recording on Centaur Records with cellist Jeffrey Lastrapes was released in 2015. Apart from teaching and playing the violin, she loves hiking, reading, and spending time with her two rescue puppies Bella and Jasper!
ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST
Violinist Ernest Salem is Professor of Music at California State University, Fullerton. He is also Area Coordinator for the String area at CSUF. He has performed in concerts and recitals across the United States and presented master classes at various universities, colleges and arts schools. Former university affiliations include appointments as a faculty member at Wichita State University, the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and New Mexico State University.
Active as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles Area, Salem has performed with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Orchestra, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, Asia American Orchestra and South Coast Symphony. Formerly Concertmaster of the Wichita and Las Cruces Symphonies, he has also served as Principal Second of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Texas Chamber and Texas Opera Theater Orchestras.
As a chamber musician, Salem has been violinist with California State University, Fullerton’s Premiere Trio, first violinist with Wichita State’s Fairmount Quartet, a member of the College of St. Benedict’s Chamber Ensemble “Pastiche,” and violinist with New Mexico State’s Delphian Trio. He currently performs regularly as a chamber musician throughout Southern California.
Salem holds degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Houston and the University of Minnesota. Included among his teachers are Yfrah Neaman, Fredell Lack, and members of the Juilliard Quartet. In addition to performance activities, he has been published in the American String Teachers’ Journal and the Long Island Historical Journal.
Pianist Alison Edwards has maintained a multifaceted career in performance and pedagogy, at both the national and international levels. As soloist and collaborative pianist, she has presented recitals throughout the United States and China. Edwards has been featured concerto soloist with several Southern California orchestras including the Peninsula Symphony, the Chapman Symphony, the Marina del Rey-Westchester Symphony and others.
Edwards serves as Associate Professor of Piano and Piano Area Coordinator in the School of Music at California State University, Fullerton where she leads both the undergraduate and graduate piano pedagogy programs. She has completed guest residencies for the University of Arizona and Southern Methodist University Piano Pedagogy Programs and has presented at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
An enthusiastic masterclass clinician, Edwards has taught for the Sara Compinsky Masterclass Series, the Orange County School of the Arts and for various college/ university programs. A graduate of the University of Southern California, where she received the Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance, Edwards’ teachers have been Earle Voorhies, Daniel Pollock and Dr. Stewart Gordon.
