Welcome to the College of the Arts Spring 2025 Season. As we come together to enjoy incredible art, dance, music and theatre programming from across the college, I know we are all still reeling from the recent fires that tore through the communities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. In many ways, we are all Angelenos and when our city breaks, we break. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are finding comfort in processing complex thoughts and emotions the only way we know how: through the arts. It is our calling and what ties us to our community. Through our programming, we hope to provide a bit of respite to all of you during this time of regrouping and rebuilding.
In the College of the Arts, every note, every movement, and every word spoken on stage brings opportunity for discovery and connection. Whether you are a fellow Titan, family member, or community supporter, we are thrilled to have you here. You are now part of something much larger than this single performance. You are joining a vibrant and diverse collective of artists and technicians working together to push the boundaries of their craft.
Spring 2025 brings us a season of fresh programming to challenge our perceptions and immerse us in new perspectives. Later this month, the School of Music presents “Hajar,” a contemporary opera synthesizing ancient Jewish and Islamic stories into a modern immigration tale. Theatre begins their season with “Significant Other,” a heartfelt tale of love and longing in 21st century New York City. If you haven’t yet seen our spectacular new gallery building, make time to see “Chris O’Leary: Gravity Well” – an exploration of the cosmic phenomena of gravitational waves using video, sound, and images. In May, our dancers and choreographers return to the intimate Hallberg Theatre in “Spring Dance Theatre: From All Sides,” where viewers will experience a variety of dance forms from every angle of the stage.
It takes more than just the emotional support of friends, family, professors, and mentors to enable students to take creative risks of expression. As a college, we remain committed to providing these aspiring arts professionals with scholarships, financial assistance, and the industry-ready equipment, facilities, and opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom. Maureen Yuen (Ed.D., Columbia University; M.Mus, University of British Columbia) is a Canadian violinist, pedagogue, and researcher dedicated to scholarly inquiry and advancing the field of one-on-one pedagogy. Yuen’s global career is marked by creative artistic collaborations, pedagogical innovation, and fostering inclusivity within the world of classical music.
Yuen was previously tenured at Drake University (USA) and has also taught at Columbia University (USA), Mercyhurst University (USA), and the State University of New York (SUNY) Fredonia (USA), where she was honoured with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, chosen from nominees across the 64 SUNY campuses. Her students have gone on to receive graduate scholarships and assistantships at the Juilliard School, Indiana University, and more. Additionally, Yuen is a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada) as well as a senior adjudicator and strings specialist for the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program.
Yuen’s active performing and teaching schedule includes solo and chamber music performances, recordings, adjudication, and master classes worldwide, including the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the University of Nairobi (Kenya), and across Japan as a mentor with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. In solo performances, Yuen curates programmes that showcase works from underrepresented composers, enriching the musical landscape with a tapestry of voices often overlooked in traditional settings. Her debut solo recording, “Violin Music by Women: A Graded Anthology, Volumes 1 & 2,” released by Albany Records in 2023, can be found on all major streaming platforms and CDs can be purchased at Albany Records and Sleepy Puppy Press.
In addition to performing and teaching, Yuen is a published scholar with articles in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Her research focuses on access and equity in applied music, challenging traditional pedagogical models, and promoting diversity in the performing arts. Most recently, she contributed the chapter, “Challenging Tradition: Examining Access and Equity in the Master-Apprentice Studio Model,” to the book, The Applied Studio Model in Higher Music Education: Critical Perspectives and Opportunities, edited by Kelly Parkes and Ryan Daniel, published by Routledge in 2024.
As a dedicated advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion in the arts, Yuen actively engages in professional service. She serves on the editorial board of the American String Teacher Journal and as string editor of Rising Tide Music Press which supports emerging composers of color, contributing her expertise to shape the future of applied music education. She has also served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts (USA).
Yuen joined the School of Music at the University of Nevada, Reno in January, 2025. She is a D’Addario artist and performs on a Storioni composite violin, ca. 1750.
ABOUT THE PIANIST
Mikhail Korzhev, a pianist that “projects strength, atmosphere and the ability to tangle even the knottiest passages…” (International Record Review) is equally active as a solo recitalist, a performer with various chamber groups, a soloist with orchestras, and as a recording artist. His latest CD recordings, the two volumes of a Complete Piano Concertos by Ernst Krenek in collaboration with English Symphony Orchestra and Kenneth Woods were released by Toccata Classics in 2016 and 2017 to enthusiastic reviews in Gramophone, Diapason and other publications, made it to the “want list” of Fanfare magazine, became one of “10 Best Contemporary Records of the Year” by The Times (London), and in December 2017 made it to the list of “Top 10 Best Classical Records of the Year” by Forbes magazine. In September 2017 Korzhev became a recipient of a prestigious Anassilaos Prize, the annual award for the achievements in Arts and Sciences given by the local government of the province of Calabria (Italy).
Korzhev has collaborated with several distinguished conductors: Sergiu Commissiona, Carlo Ponti Jr. and others, his chamber music collaborations include performing with soloists of Russian National Orchestra, Mladi Chamber Orchestra, Lyris String Quartet, and members of St. Petersburg and Tokyo String Quartets among others. His collaborative work was highly appreciated by Eugenia Zukerman, Richard Stolzman, Oleh Krysa and other noted musicians. Korzhev’s performances received a high critical acclaim from American and European press: “The young Russian pianist… displayed a notable technical mastery which allowed for passionate moments of ardent lyricism as well as wonderful purity and fluency…” (Momento Sera, Rome).” Korzhev belongs to that exclusive club of super musicians…he already performs like a keyboard legend…he is a major talent.” (Salt Lake Tribune).
His particular interest in contemporary music has led Korzhev to participate in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in 2005, which had the emphasis on the music of Ernst Krenek. As a winner of that competition Korzhev gave a recital in the Vienna’s Konzerthaus about which the Wiener Zeitung wrote: “Korzhev obviously has a lot of affection for Krenek’s style… brings out well the dramatic qualities of his music…” Following the success of his Vienna debut Korzhev recorded a CD of Krenek’s piano music, released by Phoenix Edition/Naxos in 2008 that became an instant top seller and received several very enthusiastic reviews in the press.
Korzhev’s discography also includes three CD recordings featuring compositions for solo piano and chamber works by a prominent English composer Gerard Schurmann (in collaboration with Alyssa Park and Lyris string quartet) and a compilation of 40 classical standards for the online music library Megatrax.com.
Korzhev combines his performing career with teaching. He taught at University of Southern California. Currently he is on the faculty of California State University at Fullerton and Chapman University. Since 2008 Korzhev is the faculty member at Beverly Hills International Music Festival. In the summer of 2009, he taught a summer course at the Bosendorfer Piano Academy in Vienna, Austria.
Korzhev holds a doctorate in piano performance from University of Southern California, where he studied with Daniel Pollack. His previous teachers include Alexander Satz and Vera Khoroshina at Moscow Conservatory College.
