OLLI Classes

What is OLLI?

Both “free and open to the public” and “membership-only” classes are offered. This brochure lists OLLI’s “free” classes. Membership-only classes and activities are described in our Fall Course Catalog, which is available at no charge by contacting us at 657-278-2446 or emailing olli-info@fullerton.edu.

Lifelong learning for retired and semi-retired persons at Cal State Fullerton. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUF is one of 117 university-based programs in the United States. Each OLLI reflects the culture of its own university and OLLI’s learning community. OLLI-CSUF is one of the largest and bestknown OLLIs with a diverse curriculum and extensive membership benefits. Lifelong learners at CSUF spearheaded the fund raising and supervised the on campus construction of the CSUF Ruby Gerontology Center where more than 95 percent of OLLI’s classes are offered.

Today, OLLI offers classes of interest to new retirees and those planning to retire. Each semester’s classes include study groups, educational lectures, discussion groups, computer education, physical activities, special events and social activities.

Membership fees are: • Fall 2015, Spring 2016 and Summer 2016 semesters: $250 • Fall 2015 OR Spring 2016 semesters: $140 • Summer semester only: $85 Some classes and activities have nominal charges for materials, or equipment replacement or special event or trip transportation/ admission expenses. Semester fees for new members joining midway through a semester are pro-rated.

Transitions in Retirement OLLI’s Transitions in Retirement (TIR) program provides a series of classes for persons transitioning into retirement. These courses are conveniently scheduled on late afternoons and weekends.

Directional Signage New campus signage at CSUF entrances and along the major access roads within the campus directs vehicles to major campus facilities, including the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC) that houses OLLI. Primary access to OLLI is via either Gymnasium (Gym) Dr. or Folino Dr.

Campus Access 1) If entering the campus from Yorba Linda Boulevard, turn south on Associated Drive (entrance #10) and turn left on East Campus Drive around the Arboretum and the student housing complex to Gymnasium Drive, then right to Lot J. 2) If entering from State College Boulevard, turn east onto Gymnasium Drive (entrance #6). When the road curves to the right (at the back of the RGC building), follow the road around to the front, making a left into Lot J. 3) If entering from Nutwood (taking the Nutwood exit off the 57 Fwy.), go west on Nutwood Ave. and turn north on Folino Drive (entrance #1). Make an immediate right after passing the Marriott Hotel. Go around the easternmost side of the parking structure and north to East Campus Drive until you reach Gymnasium Drive. Turn left on Gymnasium Drive until you reach Lot J on the right.

Parking Weekdays: A CSUF daily parking pass ($8) is required on campus Monday-Thursday. On Friday, a parking permit is required until 5:00 p.m. Parking is free on Saturday and Sunday. OLLI Trolley: The free OLLI Trolley travels between the OLLI Trolley Stop and the RGC during morning and afternoon hours on Monday-Thursday when OLLI classes are scheduled. The covered Trolley Stop is located near the southeast corner of Lot G.

OLLICSUF has a lot to offer that will ensure a vibrant, active life as you begin or near retirement. These include positive psychology, staying healthy, maintaining and enhancing social connections, sustainable financial planning, and finding meaning and relevancy in the retirement years. September 12 - Social Security Essentials In this informative session, the focus will be on the timing and calculation of benefits, when to start Medicare, and payments to beneficiaries. September 19 - Cleaning Out the Clutter and Hoarding Learn the warning signs of hoarding behavior, dangers of excessive clutter and differences of collecting, clutter and hoarding behavior. September 26 - Navigating Your Financial Future in Retirement This informative session covers mutual funds, Exchange Traded Funds and Unit Investment Trusts. We will look at how they work and strategies to implement for the highest probability of success.

November 7 - What’s New in Dentistry This session will discuss the latest techniques and technology in implants, bridges, imaging, prevention techniques and the amazing outcomes relative to the possible improvement in dental health. November 14 - It’s in The Cloud The Cloud. What is it? Where is it? Why should we use it? The computer industry is embracing it in many different ways so we will try to make some sense out of it. November 21 - The Eyes Have It Topics that will be discussed include cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal problems and the latest technologies and interventions in the diagnosis and treatment of these problems. December 5 - Preparing for the Big One and More This session will demonstrate how to prepare yourself, your car, your home and your workplace for emergencies and earthquakes. Find out how much food and water to store and what to do in an earthquake. JAZZ SERIES AT STEAMERS – Listen to jazz and hear a discussion about the history of a particular theme. October 17 - Self Defense for Personal Security A self defense expert will demonstrate effective and new techniques dealing with aggressors and observing our surroundings. This is a demonstration/ observation class only.

October 24 - Medicare Essentials: What You Need to Know This class is designed for those eligible for Medicare or those planning to make changes. Topics include basic Medicare, Medicare A-B-C-D, Medicare supplemental, Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans. October 31 - Travel Adventures with Road Scholar Go where others can’t, learn from inspiring instructors, and make life-long friends through Road Scholar. Come learn about the many travel programs and destinations offered.
