WELCOME
Directors’ Note
Welcome to our production of Disney’s “NEWSIES.” We’re excited to finally share this production with you…one that the directors have been considering (and students have been hinting at) for several years!
For a bit of background, while many of our audience may be familiar with the 1992 film starring a young Christian Bale, the musical version did not open on Broadway for another 20 years. The production gained further fame with a national tour, a film, and multiple residencies at theatres around the world.
“Although Newsies is ultimately a work of fiction, the historical strike that took place in New York in July 1899 was every bit as dramatic. It lasted over two weeks and was well documented by dozens of newspapers, which relished a bunch of kids bringing down their goliath competition: the New York World.”1 The show’s main characters are based on real people and while the show may have a bit of fun with the dramatic aspect of the events, the overarching story of the children’s strike and the victory for fair treatment is all true. We invite you to visit the dramaturgical display in the lobby created by one of our cast members (and Honors Program student), Megan Lane.
It has been a joy to work with our cast to bring this story to you. The young people you see on stage tonight are some of the hardest working and most dedicated people on our campus. They always surprise and inspire us with their love for what we do. Thank you for being here to share it with us!

Charleston Southern is situated just minutes from historic Charleston, South Carolina. The university is acclaimed annually in national publications as one of the best colleges in the South and is fully experienced in summer camp operations, hosting thousands of campers annually. Leading music educators from the region will join the Horton School of Music and Performing Arts faculty and Summer Music Camp staff to provide both a quality musical experience and fun weeks for all campers.
From Monday afternoon registration through the end of camp on Saturday, campers will enjoy a nonstop mix of ensemble rehearsals, masterclass and sectional rehearsals, structured recreation, and evening entertainment and social activities. In addition to ensemble rehearsals, campers will also have the option of receiving a halfhour or hour private lesson if desired.

Saturday afternoon recitals and concerts will conclude the camp, with performances by all campers. The performances are free and open to the public, with family and friends of music campers encouraged to attend. Join us for one or both exciting weeks of Summer Music Camp!
