THE CSUN CONCERT BANDS The band program at CSUN is dedicated to the promotion of concert band music by performing the finest of literature and bringing this music to the peoples of California. Each year the CSUN concert bands perform throughout southern California, presenting concerts of the finest of band music at diverse venues — public schools, state historic parks, cultural landmarks, resort destinations, and residential communities. Through generous support provided by the CSUN Associated Students, the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony embark on unique concert series each year — “Band on the Run” concerts are free outreach performances designed specifically for presentation to the public throughout the greater Los Angeles region; other outreach concerts include performances designed specifically to bring live music to those who otherwise have limited experiences with band music. Among the innumerable collegiate wind ensembles found throughout North America, a select few have distinguished themselves from the pack of others. These distinguished few possess an established heritage of musical excellence while keeping a steadfast vision toward a relevant and profound musical future. The Wind Ensemble at CSUN is among these distinguished few. The CSUN Wind Ensemble has long been a hallmark of the excellence associated with the university’s renowned music department. With both an accomplished legacy and dedicated future, students entering the ranks of the CSUN Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony find themselves immersed in artistry and musical performance.
Lawrence Stoffel is Director of Bands at California State University, Northridge. He returned to the CSUN classroom and concert stage this semester following a fall academic sabbatical. He teaches courses in conducting and music education. Under his leadership the CSUN Wind Ensemble & Wind Symphony are active and visible throughout the state and nationally providing CSUN students with extraordinary performance opportunities. In recent years the CSUN Wind Ensemble’s touring has taken students from Orchestra Hall in Chicago, to the historic Scott Auditorium in Honolulu, to one of California’s state prisons. Known for his enthusiasm at rehearsals, concerts, and clinics alike, Dr. Stoffel has most recently conducted all-state bands in Virginia, Texas, and California. He is published and lectures on topics pertinent to the profession — from musical interpretation to band transcriptions, from the use of religious music in the public schools to teaching in urban schools, from copyright law to band discography. He has presented and conducted at The Midwest Clinic on six occasions. For more than a decade he has written and produced annual “Discovery: Music!” concerts — innovative, interactive band concerts that have received international attention. In 2018 Dr. Stoffel received the Hall of Fame Award from
the California Music Education Association, and in 2019 was elected membership into the American Bandmasters Association. In 2021 he received a touching tribute from his alma mater, Fullerton Union High School, with the FUHS “Wall of Fame” award for excellence in music education.

The 2022 College Band Directors National Association Conference Tacoma, Washington The CSUN Wind Ensemble was one of just nine collegiate concert bands selected by a blind-audition process to perform at the College Band Directors National Conference (CBDNA) regional conference that was to have been held at the University of Puget Sound in March of 2020. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of this conference. But to the credit of the CBDNA leadership, these same Universities were invited back to perform at the “make-up” 2022 conference. So the CSUN Wind Ensemble takes to the great Northwest next month to perform at this noteworthy conference. Tonight’s Wind Ensemble program — entitled, “Isn’t It Romantic?” — is a preview of the concert to be given at next month’s CBDNA Conference.
