A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to Colorado State University!

C

olorado State University is committed to student success. From their first Preview orientation to graduation and beyond, we want all our students to be well-prepared academically and personally for whatever challenges and opportunities the future holds. We can’t run a successful, winning athletics program without a strong commitment to the success of our student-athletes. Earning a CSU degree is our ultimate goal for each student-athlete at CSU, and Ram fans can be proud that our players continue to graduate and succeed at a higher rate even than the general student body. In fact, our Ram athletes have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, educators, business professionals, public servants, parents, community leaders, and yes, even professional athletes. Their energy and experience, combined with a solid education, positions them to be champions no matter where the future leads. But all students can encounter obstacles on the road to earning a diploma— obstacles often related to finances, indecision, desire for a greater sense of community, need for academic support, and sometimes lack of personal motivation. While student-athletes encounter many of these same obstacles, they also serve as highly visible role models and strive for winning records. As with all our students, CSU is dedicated to providing the resources and programs they need to achieve their full potential, with state-of-the-art training facilities, academic support, service-learning opportunities, and focused study environments. The life of a student-athlete is formed around hard work, self-discipline, teamwork, and a passion for achievement. That spirit—matched with strong academic support systems and high expectations—is a winning formula for Colorado State. We’re proud to celebrate another great year in Rams sports and to recognize the students and fans who make it all possible. Go Rams!

2014-15 COLORADO STATE SWIMMING & DIVING

With more than 150 programs of study and 78 undergraduate degree programs offered in eight colleges and the graduate school, and a faculty-to-student ration of 17:1, students have access to a wealth of educational possibilities at Colorado State. Along with outstanding programs in the liberal and performing arts, humanities and social sciences, Colorado State offers some of the top professional programs in the country in construction management, occupational therapy, psychology, communications and agriculture. Colorado State is also making investments in new facilities--$27 million has been committed for building a new indoor practice facility and a new academic and training center dedicated to student-athletes. New residence halls, a parking garage and both new and renovated academic buildings are just a few of the projects under construction across campus. We invite you to learn more about Colorado State, a university with vision, character and a commitment to excellence.

WORLD-CLASS ACADEMICS

C

olorado State University takes very seriously its role in educating student-athletes. Excellence is expected on the field and in the classroom.

The most recent NCAA academic statistics reveal that Colorado State leads the Mountain West Conference in graduation rate for student-athletes at 66 percent – well ahead of the conference’s overall student-athlete graduation rate of 57 percent. In football, Colorado State is second in the MW, graduating 68 percent of its student-athletes – again, well ahead of the conference average of 49 percent. Colorado State, however, is not resting on its reputation for graduating its student-athletes. The state-of-the-art Anderson Academic Center, which greatly enhances the academic facilities available for student-athletes, opened in August 2009.

While the athletic department takes its role in the educational process very seriously, Colorado State’s mission to provide a world-class education is at the core of academic success. U.S. News and World Report ranked Colorado State in its top tier in its annual “America’s Best Colleges” report. The university offers 79 majors and 27 minors, and many of its programs are ranked among the best in the country. Colorado State continues to push forward in its mission to provide the best possible education. Construction recently was completed on the stateof-the-art University Center for the Arts and Computer Science buildings, along with the indoor practice facility, academic and training center, and the Rockwell Hall expansion at the College of Business. • CSU’s Veterinary Medicine program ranks second in the country and is the national leader in federal research dollars. • BusinessWeek ranked CSU’s undergraduate College of Business program 67th (up from 73rd in 2008). The program ranks 30th among all public schools and 14th among all colleges and universities in the West and Southwest. The marketing and business law programs were ranked in the nation’s Top 10 by the magazine. • In December 2008, CSU conferred its 150,000th bachelor’s degree and 200,000th overall degree. • According to NCAA statistics, CSU’s graduation rate for student-athletes is higher than the graduation rate for the overall student body.

DENVER, THE MILE HIGH CITY

T

he Denver Metro Area, with a population of 2.4 million, is less than an hour’s drive from Fort Collins. A major-league metropolis, named by the Sporting News the best sports city in the United States, Denver is home to three teams that have competed for their respective world championships in the past 14 years — the Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII champion Denver Broncos, the 1996 and 2001 Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, and the 2007 National League champion Colorado Rockies, who lost the World Series that season to the Boston Red Sox. The Denver Nuggets, meanwhile, have made the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, including a trip to the 2009 Western Conference finals against the evential champion Los Angeles Lakers. Sports fans in Colorado are among the most passionate in the nation, and for good reason — their teams are winners. Denver has all the features of any big city, including great shopping and nightlife on the 16th Street Mall (Denver Pavilions, below left), a one-of-a-kind concert venue in Red Rocks Amphitheatre (below, second from right), an adrenaline-inducing amusement park in Elitch Gardens, and the world’s 10thbusiest airport, Denver International. Nicknamed the Mile High City because it is one mile above sea level, downtown Denver is home to the Colorado state capitol building, the 13th step of which is exactly one mile in elevation.

n 1998, Colorado State enhanced its weight room and built an academic center as part of the McGraw Athletic Center project, but these facilities no longer meet the needs of its expanded student-athlete base, nor do they allow the Rams to compete for top-quality recruits. Because of the heavy time constraints placed on CSU student-athletes through practice, travel, strength and conditioning, and community service, a quality learning environment is essential for the university’s student-athletes to achieve the high standards of academic success expected of them.

The McGraw Athletic Center (right), which was built in 1998 and houses the CSU athletic department, is now accompanied by a pair of new, stateof-the-art facilities: the Academic & Training Center (top) and the Indoor Practice Facility (next page--0). 2014-15 COLORADO STATE SWIMMING & DIVING

The Colorado State swimming & diving team has nothing but good vibes coming into the 2014-15 season. For the first time in four years, the Rams are coming off a winning dual-meet season. Add that to a lineup which returns more than 80 percent of its letterwinners, and CSU has placed expectations upon itself to be a driving force in the Mountain West. “I am very optimistic about this year.” Head Coach Christopher Woodard said. “We have the sophomore class that knows what to expect and how to compete at this level, and they are a great compliment to our upperclassmen. We also have very capable freshmen.” The Rams also return a tremendous group of divers. Led by junior Ariana Milone and senior Melissa Bollig – who both scored at last season’s conference championship meet – the talented group of divers is expected to carry the program to another successful season. “Once again, our diving team will be among the best in the conference,” Woodard said. “Ari is our strongest diver, and she’ll steal a lot of first places, which [ 16 ]

2014-15 COLORADO STATE SWIMMING & DIVING

helps our team win dual meets and puts points on the board for us. Our diving team is very experienced and strong.” Milone finished fifth in the 1-meter diving event at the Mountain West Championships last February, the Rams’ highest finish. She also earned ninth place on the 3-meter springboard, while Bollig placed eighth in the 1-meter event. Those two, in addition to Paige Greely and Mary Kate Hardy, qualified for NCAA Zones in 2013-14, the most represented by CSU in more than a decade and tied for the most in the Mountain West. In addition the strong diving group and veteran presence, the Rams are also optimistic because of their balance. “We have a much more-rounded team this year,” Woodard said. “Megan Lloyd is a force in the Mountain West and Karin Roh, our freestyler, has really come into her own and is extremely motivated this year. Jessica Shepard and Tess Simpson are also lynch pins to what we do. They have a lot of diversity, and

they know how to swim tough.” Shepard earned All-Mountain West honors last year, finishing fifth in the 100 Backstroke, while Simpson placed 10th in the 100 Breaststroke. Woodard and his staff added seven freshmen to its roster this year, highlighted by four Colorado athletes and High School All-American Katie Kicklighter. “I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen from our freshmen,” Woodard said. “They’re clicking well, and I expect them to make an immediate impact for us. They understand what it means to be Ram tough.” With a new year comes new renovations to Moby Pool. There has been a joint effort between campus and athletics to update the swimming facilities, which has the Rams excited. “I hope the updates invigorate our athletes,” Woodard said. “Not to make excuses for my girls, but I think that it is tough on them seeing the same thing

every day, and after these renovations they will have a little shot and a sense of pride. The renovations include updated bleachers and painted walls, and most importantly, new starting blocks and a rebrand to the pool deck. Building off last year’s success, it is clear that the Rams’ swimming & diving program is headed in the right direction. “Our goal is to beat as many people as we can along the way and build confidence to be ready for the Mountain West Championships,” Woodard said. The Rams begin their season with a meet at Denver on Oct. 18. Less than a week later, they will be home to host four teams over three-straight weekends, beginning with Wyoming (Oct. 24). CSU also hosts Northern Colorado in January before embarking on the Mountain West Championships in San Antonio, Texas (Feb. 18-21).

CHRISTOPHER WOODARD

Head Coach | Fifth Year | Hartwick, ‘95 | woody.woodard@colostate.edu | 970/491-6026 Christopher `Woody’ Woodard enters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Colorado State women’s swimming & diving program. The Rams are coming off their most successful season during Woodard’s era, holding a winning record and a four-win improvement from 2012-13 to 2013-14. While the Rams had plenty of success in 2013-14, Woodard knows that with an experienced lineup back in the pool, that the future of the program is even brighter. The Rams return 23 of their 28 letterwinners from last year, including their three All-Mountain West performers.

[ 18 ]

2014-15 COLORADO STATE SWIMMING & DIVING

In three years at CSU, Woodard has re-established roots that trace back to a storied history that includes multiple top conference finishes and NCAA qualifiers. Under Woodard’s watch, the Rams have set nine school records and in 2013, Woodard helped coach Breann Fuller, who was a Mountain West champion in the 200 Butterfly and finished in the top 25 in both the 100 and 200 Butterfly at the NCAA Championships. Woodard, a former assistant coach for swimming and water polo at Colorado State from 2000-05, returned to CSU after six years at North Carolina State, where he was the associate head men’s swimming coach and an assistant for the women’s program. In Woodard’s 18 years of experience, he has assisted in coaching Olympic gold medalists Amy Van Dyken (2000) Head Fifth(2008), Year | and Hartwick, | woody.woodandCoach Cullen |Jones was the‘95 primary coach for ard@colostate.edu | 970/491-6026 14-time Paralympic gold medalist Erin Popovich. Van Dyken and Popovich are former Rams. During his tenure with NC State, Woodard’s swimmers compiled 58 school records, and the women’s team placed 29th at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Both the men’s and women’s squads were named scholastic All-America teams in 2010. Jones, before winning the gold medal in 2008, was the 2006 NCAA champion in the 50 Freestyle. While at CSU, Woodard helped coach the Rams to a 37-13 dual-meet record from 2000-05 and produced five Mountain West champions with 14 school records. CSU finished in the top three in the MW each year from 2001-04, including a 10-0 record and a regular-season championship in 2004, the same season the team was an NCAA qualifier. Woodard served as a volunteer assistant with the Rams from 1998-2000 while obtaining his master’s degree. Away from the pool, Woodard’s teams have set the standard in the classroom. In three seasons as head

coach, 20 Rams have earned Mountain West ScholarAthlete status, the highest academic honor bestowed upon by the conference. Additionally, CSU has earned Team Scholar All-America recognition for seven times. The prestigious academic honor is awarded twice a year to teams with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Before his time at the university level, Woodard served as the head coach for the Shawmut Aquatic Club, from 1996-98. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., graduating in 1995. He earned his first coaching job after graduation as an assistant swim coach with Hartwick (1995-96), where he recruited three future All-Americans. Woodard is the fifth head coach in program history. He replaced long-time head coach John Mattos, who retired after the 2010-11 season, his 31st at CSU. Woodard is married to wife Holly, and together they have a son, Gabriel, and daughter, Elliot.

KEVIN WITT

Head Diving Coach | Ninth Year | Colorado State, ‘93 | kevin.witt@colostate.edu | 970/491-7242 The Colorado State diving program will again be under great leadership in 2014-15, as CSU alum Kevin Witt returns for his ninth season. The 2013-14 season showed hints of greatness, and the future looks even brighter for the Rams. Four divers qualified for NCAA Zones a year ago, and all four will be back this season. Ariana Milone and Paige Greely, both sophomores last year, rank among the top-five performers in CSU history. Milone earned AllMountain West honors for the second year in a row, while teammates Melisa Bollig earned the honor for the first time this past season. The four NCAA Zones qualifiers were tied for the most in the Mountain West, and the most represented by CSU in more than a decade. Witt is no stranger to coaching in the area, serving 11 years as the head diving coach for the Poudre School District. In that role, Witt was in charge of managing the training and competitions for 20 to 25 athletes from Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain, Poudre and Fossil Ridge high schools each season. He coached both the men’s and women’s seasons, as well as handling the supervision and training throughout the year. Additionally, Witt continues to manage the Fort Collins Diving Club. He is the owner and operator of a private United States Diving Member Club age-group team. His responsibilities as head diving coach and owner include all coaching duties involving weight training, conditioning, and yearround training and competitions.

Under his supervision the Poudre School District and the Fort Collins Diving Club have produced more than 50 high school state finalists, 17 Colorado High School State Champions, 14 National Interscholastic High School AllAmericans, one National Interscholastic High School national champion, and multiple zone and national Junior Olympic qualifiers, as well as one Junior Olympic national 1-meter champion and two AAU National Champions on both the 1 and 3-meter springboards. More than 30 of the high school athletes that Witt has mentored have gone on to dive for NCAA Division I or Division II programs across the country. The Colorado High School Swim Coaches Association named Witt its Coach of the Year four times. He’s also been named the Colorado Girls 4A Diving Coach of the Year (2000), Colorado Girls 5A Diving Coach of the Year (2001-02), Colorado Boys 5A Diving Coach of the Year (2002), and Colorado Girls 5A Diving Coach of the Year (2004-05). Witt graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Colorado State in 1993. He went on to receive his master of arts in elementary education from the University of Northern Colorado in 2000.

MACKENZIE BROWN

Assistant Coach | Second Year | Colorado State, ‘08 | mackenzie.lindstrom@colostate.edu Former Colorado State swimmer MacKenzie Brown begins her second season as assistant coach with the CSU swimming & diving program. She was hired by Head Coach Christopher Woodard on Sept. 11, 2013. As a former swimmer for the Rams and volunteer coach with the team, Brown brings with her a wealth of knowledge, in and out of the pool. “We are very fortunate to have someone as qualified as MacKenzie in our own backyard,” Woodard said. “It has been my pleasure to both coach her and work with her as a colleague. She is innovative, hard working and very capable of making the transition to NCAA coaching. She has worked with some great mentors, including Fort Collins Area Swim Team head coach Chris Webb. I expect that MacKenzie will be a shot in the arm for our program as we continue to build a nationally recognized program.” Head Coach | Fifth Year | Hartwick, Brown was most definitely a shot in the arm, helping CSU to its first winning record in four seasons. Brown helped mentor a freshman class of 15, with many of them becoming immediate impact performers. As a former swimmer, she can also relate to the student-athletes in a

Working with children ages 8-16, Brown developed dry land circuits, nutrition seminars and directed in-water training. “Teaching and encouraging athletes to reach their fullest potential has become the true passion of my life,” Brown said. “I am thrilled for the chance to be involved in the program that gave me so much support and opportunity while I was a student-athlete at CSU.” Brown grew up in Atascadero, Calif., attending Templeton High School.
