13 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENERGY AUTONOMY OF GEWERBE (INDUSTRIAL & TRADE) ZONES IN LIECHTENSTEIN Research project at the University of Liechtenstein

This research paper investigated and surveyed the status quo of industrial and trade (Gewerbe) zones in Liechtenstein. As Liechtenstein is highly industrial country (it accounts for 40.6% employment in country and is the second biggest sector after services 58.6%) (Office of Statistics). As the research revealed, the country has around 9 significant, distinctive and specially designated zones (more-less separated and usually nearby or as one part of the municipality) for this purpose use. They are mainly located in municipalities at Rhine valley and even on Rhine valley flood risk areas (as the flat surface for this scale buildings are more appropriate as well as because of logistics and easy accessible infrastructure). After this - country scale survey, the closer research and examination of specific or typical sites – two model regions “Negrut” in Balzers and “Neusand” in Triesen were chosen. The overall urban analysis (ground floor functions and public transport accessibility) and built environment quality were conducted and assessed. For example, the mapped hard and permeable surfaces map shoved the overwhelming hard surface dominance (mainly flat road and sidewalk areas), meanwhile the green infrastructure could be more integrated, in order to improve the working environment quality and general microclimate. An additional focus in research was on renewable energy use in this energy intensive sector. It was mapped the existing solar energy use on sites as well as surveyed and mapped appropriate surfaces and potential for the future adaption and with the other on site and renewable energies, as geothermal, wind and environmental heat, it was calculated and concluded that it can be possible to achieve 100% renewable energy target and use in these areas. Also the current waste management in country and operated in zones (e.g. container service) could be rethought in future and instead of current one way – linear metabolism transformed to circular -closed loop recycling and exchange within the region in order to use materials efficiently and crate more sustainable and active local Industrial Ecology.
