FOOTBALL

DIGEST

by Kevin Kinder

DON’T TRUST ALL THE NUMBERS

West Virginia’s 24-20 win over Texas was a total advertisement for the danger of looking at statistics and making judgments about a game. Even a cursory look at the raw numbers would have pointed toward a Longhorn win, while not revealing many of the finer points that the Mountaineers rode to victory. First, there was offensive output. The Longhorns ran an even 100 plays, topping their season average by 20. They rang up 536 yards of total offense, with running back D’Onta Foreman gaining 167 on the ground. They kept the ball more than 11 minutes in the second quarter, and passed for 318. That had to add up to a win, right? Now factor in WVU’s numbers. The Mountaineers had four turnovers, including three interceptions in the third quarter. West Virginia did force three countering Longhorn giveaways, but could not score off any of them. Two, in fact, were given right back via West Virginia bobbles. West Virginia’s primary running back averaged just 2.9 yards per carry, and it had 27 fewer offensive snaps than Texas. So, just how did the Mountaineers keep the Texas Tower dark (it is lit with floodlights after ‘Horn wins) and fly out of Austin with the victory? By coming out on top in some key situations, by making a few big plays, and most importantly, by winning the battles that are truly important – not just the ones that dot the stat sheet. While WVU did yield a lot of yardage to Foreman, he didn’t rip off multiple huge runs as he has in other games.

He had one 32-yarder, but West Virginia kept him to three and four-yard efforts on his other gains. Perhaps more importantly, the Mountaineers kept the lead throughout. That kept UT from simply running him over and over again (even though he did have 35 attempts). Had the Horns ever gotten the lead, he might have had 50. Also dotting the landscape were big special teams plays. Punter Billy Kinney was stellar, averaging a net 44.6 yards per kick. WVU blocked a field goal. It forced two other field goals in the red zone, turning a potential 14 points into six. And it shut Texas out in the final quarter. This has, in many ways, become the calling card of the 2016 Mountaineers. In some manner, whether supported by the numbers or not, they have come out on top eight times in nine games. It hasn’t always been classically beautiful, but it has been supported by the one number that matters – the one on the scoreboard.

FIT TO BE TIED 'Tis time to start thinking Thanksgiving. After a presidential campaign that gave new meaning to the word eternity, it’s finally upon us. Just a heads up reminder for you Wimpy and I will be off next week. To all of you hunters out there ... try not to shoot us. We have done the best we could this year. In this edition which has to cover two weeks of games, Wimpy and I will try to wrap up our thoughts on the WALLY's homestretch of the TECHNICAL 2016 season before we ANALYSIS put out our final “playoff” edition the week after Thanksgiving. Our final edition will give you our picks for the conference championship games.

In the meantime, let’s look at the horses who are jockeying for position to get into those conference playoffs. (Last week I received a very interesting call from BW in Charleston. He gave me a very interesting scenario for how things could end up. I had planned to review it this week, but this weekend's upsets of three of the top four teams upset his apple cart. Quite a dog day ... Iowa +19½, Pitt +20, USC +8.) Many of the conferences are going to end up being decided by tiebreakers. (Head to head matchups are almost always the first decider on who is declared the champion.) This is an extraordinary year because of the number of teams who will finish tied at the top of the conference and division standings. You will need to dig down into the schedules to see who beat whom. Have fun figuring the scenarios out. In the Big XII the stretch run is full of possibilities. It is the only conference in the NCAA’s FBS division whose teams schedule every other team in the conference during the season. Moreover, aside from the Sun Belt, it is the only conference that doesn’t have a championship game this year (the Big XII will institute one next season and the Sun Belt in 2018.) In the Big XII three teams are still in the hunt: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and

F O O T B A L L

D I G E S T

WVU. Oklahoma has games remaining with both of these teams. It's quite likely that a tiebreaker will decide this one. WVU passed Texas at the stretch and now has the Big Red team from Oklahoma in its sights this week in Morgantown. To paraphrase our President-Elect, "This one is YU-UGE! A win this weekend will make WVU great again." The 'Eers need to take it one at a time. (A win over Oklahoma would be a good tiebreaker to own.) In the Big Ten, Michigan controls its own destiny in the East, but it remains to be seen whether the Wolverines can control the Bucks in Columbus. If OSU wins "The Game", Penn State wins because the Lions have the tiebreaker over the Bucks. Wisconsin will get a rematch with that team in the Big Ten Championship game. It figures to come down to the Badgers beating Minnesota at Camp Randall at the end of the season. (Again, a tiebreaking win is in favor of the Badgers over Nebraska.) In the ACC the picture seems to be clear. My buddy BW is still quite happy with the job that his man Justin Fuente is doing with the Hokies, and he has a right to be. Even with their loss to Georgia Tech, the championship in this conference would seem to come down to two teams. Clemson will play Virginia Tech on December 3rd

Page 3

assuming that they can dispatch Wake Forest and Virginia, respectively. The two division champs might tie in the conference standings but VT beat UNC and Clemson beat Louisville. And so as discussed, the champ is decided by awarding it to the team that won in a head to head matchup. In the PAC 12, one of the two Washington schools will represent the North division in the championship game. The Huskies have to go to Wazoo so anything could happen in the Apple Cup. In the South, the big game is scheduled for November 26 in Boulder: Utah plays Colorado and that one figures to decide who goes to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara for the championship game. Utah controls its own fate, but if they lose to Colorado, it's possible that USC can enter the picture. In the SEC, the Gators will have to beat LSU in Death Valley (remember the rainout? - this game was scheduled to be played in the Swamp this year) to win the East and move onto the "Alabama Invitational." Probably not happening. I figure Tennessee will win it and get a beatdown rematch with Bama. Even if Bama loses the Iron Bowl to Auburn, the Tide will be one of the few teams that can claim an outright divsion title. That's about it for now ... see you in two weeks. Have a Happy Thankgiving!

CHARLESTON

How do you feel about being a salesman? Don’t you know everybody is a salesman? Everybody is trying to sell something. Maybe you’re a seven year old trying to convince your mother you need an ice cream cone or maybe you’re a 70 year old trying to convince people you should be elected president. Whatever you do you’ve got ideas to sell. But ideas to be effective must be communicated. So whether you are running for office, selling insurance, cars, or ice cream, Here’s an idea for you --> try saying it with ink.

AS TIME GOES BY Wally asked me to go off the script this week and talk about the "futures" market since this edition covers more than one week. He asked me to give you the reader my picks for the teams that would make the conference championship games. I will get get to WIMPY'S GUT that but before I do, SENSE I want to look into the crystal ball and go ahead a few years further. Have you heard the talk about Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big XII? Itcan't happen until 2024, but might it happen? What would happen if the Big XII dissolves with the departure of Texas and Oklahoma and why might it happen? Right now there are 64 teams in the Power Five conferences. It’s been proposed that four 16 team conferences would provide a logical way to decide the final four

&

W I M P Y ' S

teams in the College Playoffs. How are they going to determine the final four this year? It comes down to politics - our true national sport. But as we are learning, a lot of folks have gotten sick of politicians. Speaking of politicians - did Oklahoma president David Boren have a vision that those 64 teams will eventually end up in four 16 team conferences? Is that why he balked on the idea of taking two more teams into the Big XII? Did he surmise that Big XII expansion would just complicate the inevitable move to a Power Four structure? Don't ask me where WVU would end up. Maybe someday there will be a group of teams that will get together and sign a Declaration of Independence. WVU's days as an Independent were pretty good in my memory. One more look into the future. Where are coaches's salaries going? Currently there are seven coaches who get paid $5,000,000 or more: Jim Harbaugh of Michigan ($9,004,000); Nick Saban of Alabama ($6,939,395); Urban Meyer of Ohio State ($6,094,800); Bob Stoops of Oklahoma ($5,550,000); Jimbo Fisher of Florida State ($5,250,000); Charlie Strong of Texas ($5,200,030) and Kevin Sumlin of Texas A&M ($5,000,000). Are these salaries a good return on investment? What is a win worth?

F O O T B A L L

D I G E S T

Take Michigan for example. You would expect three wins from scheduling alone, so to get to 12 costs $1,000,000 per win. If Texas wins its last two games that's what Charlie Strong will get paid for each Big XII win, so the 'Horns are just paying market prices. Crazy market. Is a win really worth that much? How long can this go on? That's enough about the long term future and coaches' salaries for now. How about the next two weeks? Let's look ahead and see what teams will play in the conference championship games. Here goes ... In the SEC we will have Tennessee vs Alabama. Alabama has clinched the SEC West. Tennessee will win its final two conference games and Florida will lose at LSU and give Tennessee the East title. (The Vols have the tiebreaking win over Florida.) The Big Ten will have Penn State vs Wisconsin. Penn State will win out over Rutgers and Michigan State and get help from an Ohio State win vs. Michigan. (PSU owns the tiebreaker with OSU.) Wisconsin will also win out and capture the Big Ten West. That means that the Big Ten will have a pair of two loss teams playing for the title. But don't worry Buckeye fans. Ohio State will pass the "I" test and get in the College Football Playoff, meaning that " 'I' will bring more money than you." The ACC will have Clemson and Virginia Tech. The Tigers will win at Wake

Page 5

Forest and get in by virtue of its tiebreaking win over Louisville. Virginia Tech will also get in by winning its final conference game at home vs. Virginia. The Hokies own the tiebreaker with North Carolina. The PAC Ten will feature a new face in Washington State and USC. Wazoo will get in by beating Washington at home and will play Southern Cal, a team that has the best talent in the conference. Wazoo will give USC help by beating Colorado this weekend, but the Buffs will bounce back to beat the Utes on Thanksgiving Week. That leaves us with the Big XII - the conference without a championship game, until next year. I like WVU to win at home against Oklahoma and on the road against Iowa State over the next two weeks. Oklahoma will then have a week off after losing in Morgantown. Oklahoma State plays at TCU on Saturday, a game I think the Pokes will lose. Oklahoma State will have the next week off. So instead of a single championship game on December 3, the Big XII will have two. Baylor at WVU and Oklahoma State at Oklahoma. I think that two championships are better than one. And playing every one in your conference every year is definitely a good thing. The way other conferences do it is like you seeing your neighbor outside in plain view and sending him a text. That's all for now ... Happy Thanksgiving!

WVU AND MARSHALL ANTICIPATE A MEMORABLE BASKETBALL SEASON I recently had a chance to catch up with Hargrave Military Academy postgraduate basketball coach A.W. Hamilton, situated in Chatham, Virginia. You might remember him. Yes, he’s THAT A.W. Hamilton, who played hoops at MU from 2002-2005 after transferring to Huntington from Wake Forest. Hamilby Mitch Vingle ton assisted Kevin Keatts, now the head coach at UNC Wilmington, at Hargrave before taking over the program. But to the news. First, Mountain State fans might know former South Charleston High standout Brandon Knapper, a WVU signee, decided to hone his skills at Hargrave. Well, Hamilton had some very nice things to say about Knapper. And that’s not all. He had scoop on two Marshall basketball signees

– because they too play for Hargrave. But let’s get to Knapper first. Understand that Hargrave was ranked the nation’s preseason No. 1 prep team, according to NextUpRecruits.com – and Knapper has not only been starting, but averaging over 20 points a game. Through his team’s 3-0 start, Knapper connected on 67 percent of his shots from the floor and 58 percent of his 3-point attempts. “I’m really, really pleased with Brandon,” Hamilton said. “He’s had an incredible approach to this season and is off to an unbelievable start. He’s been lights-out. He’s been absolutely lights-out.” Understand Hargrave isn’t for the faint of heart. Hamilton is coaching kids heading to Ohio State, Georgetown and Xavier. So Knapper is making a statement here. “I’ve been very pleased and as we continue to go forward he’ll get even better,” Hamilton said. “He’s getting in much better shape. He’s learning how to play the point guard position a little bit more. He’s doing a really good job. I’m really proud of that kid. “The thing that’s great about Brandon is he’s a really, really smart kid. He works hard in the classroom and on the court. He’s a studentathlete. And it’s always fun to be surrounded with a bunch of those guys.” WVU’s Bob Huggins is waiting. “We’re playing him at the 1 [point guard] and 2 [shooting guard],” Hamilton said of the 6-foot-1 Mountaineer signee. “Our style here is to kind of play two point guards, so we have him and Braxton Beverly, who is going to Ohio State, as a two-headed monster. And they play together.” Of course, there are always aspects players

can work on. “One of the things Brandon had to work on was getting stronger, getting ready for how physical the game is going to be at West Virginia,” Hamilton said. “He’s absolutely bought in to that. We lift four times a week. We have our own strength coach. And he’s doing an incredible job getting into the weight room. When you see him you’ll be able to tell right away he’s gotten bigger and stronger. He needs to continue to that. “Then, defensively, he’s going through an adjustment. Going from prep or high school to Division I is the biggest leap. You have to learn how to guard the ball and keep guys in front of you. He has to be a guy who dives on loose balls, takes charges and things like that. That’s something he’s working on and has made a commitment to it. We watch film three, four times a week and he’s engaged and wants to get better. I’m really, really pleased with him.” Hamilton paused before restarting. “If he continues on this pace, which I’m almost 100 percent sure he will, I think he’ll be a major factor at West Virginia next year,” said the coach. OK, Marshall fans, I hear ya. So what’s the good news regarding Thundering Herd sports? Well, Hargrave has not one, but two MU signees in center Iran Bennett and forward Tanner Robinette. And… Well, I’ll just get out of the way and just let Hamilton speak of the former. “Iran has a chance to be an NBA player,” said the coach. “There aren’t many guys like him in the country. He’s 6-9½ and 320 pounds. He has the best hands of a big man I’ve ever seen. He’s a great athlete who can move his feet. He’s a monster. He’s terrific and is getting better every day.”

Page 7

Does that qualify as good news, Herd fans? In his last game, Bennett had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. He’s averaging 9.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks. “He’s a special player,” Hamilton said of Bennett. “That’s a wonderful, wonderful ‘get’ for Marshall. He could go down as one of the school’s all-time greats.” Iran, by the way, is pronounced more like Iren, then I-ran. And Marshall fans can credit assistant Mark Cline for the aforementioned ‘get.’ “He got in here early,” Hamilton said of Cline. “Iran went to the Louisville game and loved it and fell in love with Coach [Dan] D’Antoni. “Marshall is a good spot for Iran. I went there as a player and I know how good it was for me. I think the academics fit him well. The smaller environment fits him well. He can grow. We all felt it was a perfect fit for him.” Then there’s Robinette, a 6-8 forward. “He’s from Honaker, Virginia,” Hamilton said. “He’s the type of kid that’s going to be really good. He has nice touch around the basket. Big, strong body. He doesn’t really play above the rim, but he has great post moves. “He’s spent a lot of time working with [Golden State Warrior] David West on an AAU program he played with. He’s been wellcoached. I think he’ll be a guy in Conference USA and at Marshall that people will be excited about. He’s tough; he’s nasty; he boxes out and plays hard. Unbelievable kid. Marshall fans will really like Tanner Robinette.” Knapper and Bennett both start, while Robinette comes off the bench for Hamilton. Some hoops news as the regular season gets under way. Importance of Hydration & Nutrition “Your body is your weapon, if you want it to fire, you must load it properly.” An athlete’s body must be taken care of as if it were a weapon or a high powered automobile. The more appropriate care an athlete provides for their body the more efficient it will operate. For instance, a high powered automobile Chad Snodgrass needs high octane MS, SCCC, CSCS gasoline, just like the Assistant Strength human body needs Coach high quality foods and hydration levels. The human body cannot perform at high levels if it is being loaded with poor food choices and lack of fuel. The human body is predominantly made up of water, being 45% to 70% of the body, athletes need to be consistent with their hydration levels. The

human body requires constant fluid to remain functional and requires large amounts to compete at a high level of activity. Water affects the body and its athletic performance more than any other nutrient. Therefore, when consuming water, one will be able to compete at their top performance and will also be far less likely to be hindered by the effects of dehydration such as cramping. Athletes should be consuming 16 ounces of water two hours prior to competition to enhance their hydration levels. Once competition has begun, coaches should encourage athletes to continue to consume water and or sports drinks during the practice, game, or training session. There should be a consumption of 6 to 8 fluid ounces every 15 to 20 minutes. Once an athlete has become thirsty, they have already lost 1 to 2% of water in their body. At the culmination of the competition, athletes should replenish their fluids with half

EAST HARDY SECURES TOP SEED IN CLASS A

With the exception of 12th-seeded Hurricane knocking off fifth-seeded University 38-14, the Friday night slate of playoff games went largely as expected with many of the top-seeded teams winning in blowout fashion. The playoff landscape would shift drastically in Saturday afternoon’s games, however, as three top-5 teams, one in each classification, were knocked out. The biggest surprise happened in the Eastern Panhandle. Musselman, which entered the playoffs seeded third in AAA and had suffered its only in-state loss at the hands of top-seeded Martinsburg, was soundly beaten 36-0 by 14-seed Jefferson. The Cougars had entered the playoffs with a 5-5 record and lost the regular season matchup between the two teams 40-15. Elsewhere on Saturday, AA 4-seed Sissonville scored two early defensive touchdowns to jump out to a 21-7 lead over 13 th -seeded Weir and held on to that margin at halftime. The Red Riders roared back in the second half and took a 29-21 lead midway through the final period. Sissonville drove 75 yards in less than a minute to score a touch-

down with no time left on the clock, but the Indians were unable to convert the two-pointer, and Weir escaped with the 29-27 victory. In Class A, 12th-seeded Pendleton County knocked off 5-seed Cameron 50-30 to complete the Saturday afternoon upsets. Friday night’s action was highlighted by a pair of 10-seeds knocking off 7-seeds, though neither could be classified as a major upset. South Charleston and Huntington traded leads for much of the night, but the Black Eagles came away with the 31-28 victory after stopping Huntington at the one yard line on 4 th -and- goal with less than 30 seconds to play, beating the Highlanders for the second time this season. The other one was not close, as Keyser dominated Nicholas County, racing out to a 41-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 50-12 victory. South Charleston, Hurricane, Jefferson, Keyser, Weir, and Pendleton County were the only lower-seeded teams to pick up victories in the opening round. Most of the rest of the contests were not close, with a few noteworthy exceptions. In AA, top-seeded Bridgeport started slow and was in a scoreless tie at the half with Roane County before rolling to a 28-7 win. Point Pleasant withstood a late North Marion rally and held on for a 45-42, and James Monroe held off Winfield to win 38-28. Fairmont Senior had a big second half to put away Her-

Tolsia, the fourth-seeded team in Class A, led 14-0 at the half and jumped out to a 20-0 lead early in the third quarter, but rival Tug Valley came storming back to tie the game just a few minutes later. Tolsia scored one more touchdown late in the third and held on for a 26-20 win to advance to the quarterfinals. and now they will be making the same trip in the second round and looking to do the same to Morgantown. AA #10 Keyser at #2 Mingo Central Keyser made the long trip and handled business against a good team in the first round. Now, the Golden Tornado make an even longer trip and face a tougher test in the quarterfinals against a Mingo Central squad that has been strong, especially at home. #6 James Monroe at #3 Point Pleasant Both these squads held on late to secure wins at home in the opening round. Point is looking to return to the semifinals for a second straight season after making it in AAA a year ago, while James Monroe looks to return for the first time since 2008. A #8 Williamstown at #1 East Hardy The path to the championship becomes difficult very quickly for East Hardy against a Williamstown squad that, despite two losses, proved itself to be one of the best teams in Class A all season long. #6 Wheeling Central at #3 Fayetteville The Pirates were strong in their opening round win, but now they will welcome in the best Single A team they have faced this season in Wheeling Central.

NOTES AND REMARKS FROM THE SIDELINE

AND THEN THERE WERE 24...

The country has selected a new president (Donald Trump). The great state of West Virginia will have a new leader come January as its governor (Jim Justice). Meanwhile, on the West Virginia high school football scene we now know there will be at least two of the three classMark Martin es crowning a new Sports Director for state champion. In Class A, last WCHS-TV and year’s winner MagWVAH-TV nolia didn’t make the postseason while returning Class AAA champ Wheeling Park was beaten on Friday night by George Washington in the Battle of the Patriots. Three-time defending Class AA title winner Bridgeport has a shot at winning it again as the Indians advance to the next round thanks to a hard-earned win over Roane County. THE LOCATIONS With just 24 teams now standing, it brings us to 12 games total this weekend, followed by six next weekend and then the three championship games. So do the

math, there are but 21 games left to be played, and enjoyed, in this 2016 season. The locations this weekend are Martinsburg, West Huntington (Spring Valley), Morgantown and Charleston (Capital) in Class AAA. The places to be in Class AA are Bridgeport, Delbarton (Mingo Central), Point Pleasant and Fairmont (Fairmont Senior). Shifting to Class A it will be Baker (East Hardy), St. Marys, Fayetteville and Fort Gay (Tolsia). REMEMBER THE TITANS What a season it has been for the Gilmer County Titans. S teve Shuff, a Glenville State College Hall of Fame inductee this fall for his great basketball career, has guided the Titans to the school’s first-ever unbeaten season and playoff berth. The historic opening round postseason game was played Saturday night at Morris Stadium in Glenville against Summers County. The one-time Midland Trail Patriot multi-sports star lauds the efforts of Ike and Sue Morris for the facilities they have provided the young people of Gilmer County along with the students at GSC. S huff has a solid eight-member senior class, who he coached during their youth football days. The likeable head coach, who also coaches the Titan basketball program, is looking forward to his team’s big challenge on Friday night against unbeaten St. Marys.

FOOTBALL

DIGEST

Shuff feels blessed to be a part of the Gilmer County community where he has been since his college days in the ‘90s. He was fortunate to play under the guidance of Gary Nottingham, the current head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan, during his time as a Pioneer. He raves about Nottingham along with his high school coaches Steve Spicer, Jim Martin and John Flournoy. INTERESTING MATCHUP When Gilmer County invades St. Marys Friday night they will meet Jodi Mote’s Blue Devils at beautiful Bill Hanlin Stadium. The venue was recently named in honor of the West Virginia coaching legend. Hanlin, who is in his 80s, serves now as one of Mote’s assistants. As a young coach, Hanlin guided the 1963 St. Marys team to an unbeaten season in which his Blue Devils did not allow a point the entire season. He left St. Marys to become the head coach at Glenville State and had some incredible teams, including the 1973 NAIA runner-up. Hanlin left coaching during his career to become an administrator with the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission, which oversees the football playoffs and all high school sports in West Virginia. NINE WOULD BE FINE Dana Holgorsen’s Mountaineers keep on rolling.

Page 17

A victory last Saturday in Austin against the Texas Longhorns gave WVU eight on the season. And while eight is great, nine would be fine. The chance for No. 9 comes up Saturday night in Morgantown against Oklahoma. Game time is set for 8 p.m. MEN IN BLACK On Saturday Marshall donned black jerseys to pay tribute to the 75 who died in the November 14, 1970 plane crash. Besides the jerseys, the number 75 was again placed on each helmet. And this year each side of the helmet featured the logo for the Young Thundering Herd, which started the rebirth of the program in 1971. Once more, the current Thundering Herd players played their hearts in the game surrounding the crash date and came away with the biggest and most important win of the season. In case you missed it, Marshall took care of a solid Middle Tennessee team by a final of 42-17. TALKING TURKEY By this time next week we will know what 12 teams are moving on in the postseason of Mountain State high School football. Those teams will be the ones getting to not only eat turkey on Thanksgiving Day but stage a football practice. It’s the dream of every coach in West Virginia.

THIS WEEK IN THE ANNALS OF FOOTBALL November 14, 1970 Herd fans will never forget Nov. 17, 1984 - Navy sunk South Carolina’s magical season behind a defense that shut down the Gamecocks’ rushing offense and forced six turnovers. The Midshipmen scored on three straight second-half possessions – two following interceptions – to take a commanding 35-7 lead. Midshipmen Quarterback Bob Misch, filling in for Bill Byrne, found Chris Weiler for two of those touchdowns. Navy fullback Mike Smith twice ran for touchdowns, and tailback Rich Clouse, filling in for College Football Hall of Famer Napoleon McCallum, added a 53-yard scoring dash. After tying the game at 7-7 in the second quarter on

quarterback Allen Mitchell’s two-yard keeper, South Carolina was unable to score again until Navy had built a 38-7 lead. The Midshipmen finished the season with a 4-6-1 record. The Gamecocks finished with a 10-2 record and a No. 11 ranking after falling to Oklahoma State in the Gator Bowl. Nov. 19, 1949 - Before 91,000 fans at Stanford Stadium, California clinched their second consecutive Rose Bowl berth with a commanding win over Stanford. Trailing 7-6 at halftime to the Cardinal, College Football Hall of Fame coach Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf and the Golden Bears steamrolled Stanford’s defense in the second half, despite a great defensive performance by Hall of Famer Bill McColl. Led by big Jack Swaner, playing in his first full game after being sidelined with injuries, Cal scored two touchdowns in each quarter of the second half. The Golden Bears lost to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, finishing the season with a 10-1 record and a No. 3 ranking. The Cardinal, led by Hall of Fame player-turned-coach Marchmont Schwartz, finished with a 7-3-1 record after a victory over Hawaii in the Pineapple Bowl. Source: The National Football Foundation

HEAD ON

WALLY'S PRO PICKS

Pittsburgh 24 - Cleveland 14 Since Cleveland’s franchise was reformed as the “New” Browns in 1999, the Browns have only put up six wins in 35 games against the Steelers. Since the 2016 season started the Browns have put up zero wins in ten games against the rest of the league. In the words of that poor mountaineer, Jed Clampett , “Pitiful, just pitiful.”

WIMPY'S PRO PICKS

Pittsburgh 27 - Cleveland 10 Cleveland fans finally had something to celebrate last week, when - for the first time this season - the Browns didn’t lose. It was their bye week. This week, the Pittsburgh Steelers must feel like they have a bye as they will get the pleasure of handing the Cleveland 11 its 11th straight loss.

Cincinnati 28 - Buffalo 27 It’s been a little over a month since the Cincinnati 27 - Buffalo 20 The AFC North is still up for grabs. Bills blanked the New England Patriots The Bengals can stay in the race but they during a four-game winning streak that made Rex Ryan’s team the talk of the NFL. need this one. But yesterday’s heroes are today’s zeroes as Buffalo limps into Cincinnati coming off New England 34 - San Francisco 23 After struggling with the Seahawks three straight losses. Hence the saying if you defense, Tom Brady will think he’s playing bet on Buffalo, you’ll lose your bills. against a ten man defense this week. Colin Kaepernick is starting to play well again so New England 49 - San Francisco 13 Tom Brady vs. Colin Kaepernick. Do the 49ers will score some points, but his you really need to know anything else? team is no match for the Patriots. Brady will be the last man standing. Oakland 23 - Houston 13 My man Jason at Smokey Joe’s NET Oakland 24 - Houston 21 The Silver and Black are back! Whether has been smiling this year with the success of his Raiders. Unfortunately they are playing or not they will be back in Oakland still in a division with the red hot Chiefs and the remains to be seen. But we have seen Broncos so they can’t take any weeks off. enough of Derek Carr and his teammates to know that Raider Nation is headed to the They should keep pace this week. playoffs. THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES

Minnesota 34 - Detroit 27 George Richards owned a radio station in Detroit. George bought a Portsmouth, Ohio, NFL franchise in 1934 and moved it to Detroit. George needed a gimmick to popularize his team and so decided to play a Thanksgiving Day game. A great tradition ... by George.

THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES

Dallas 31 - Washington 20 Who’s Tony Romo? The Cowboys have a new gun in Dak Prescott and a new horse in Ezekiel Elliott. The Redskins are playing well, but this is a division game and the Cowboys have staked their claim to the NFC East.

Dallas 38, Washington 24 You’ve heard of a Turkey Shoot? This is a Turkey Day Shootout. Jerry’s Place will be filled with offensive fireworks in what should be a classic. The Cowboys are challenging the Patriots for the best team in the NFL moniker.

Detroit 20 - Minnesota 17 The traditional Thanksgiving game in Detroit pits two members of the NFC North, the old black and blue division. Both teams are offensively challenged but the Lions are home and have a little more firepower.

Badge's - "By the Numbers" FANTASY PROSPECTS This opening week's hot players:

QUARTERBACK: It looks as though Ben Roethlisberger is feeling better after his knee

injury. Even though Mike Tomlin continues to find ways to loose look for Big Ben to have a good fantasy stat day against their division rival the Browns. RUNNING BACK: I like Demarco Murray to have a big day against the Colts defense

this weekend. Make sure Murray is in your lineup. WR/TE: I don’t usually go with too many tight ends but who can pass up Rob

Gronkowski this week. Look for Brady and Gronk to hookup quite often this week.
