WElCOmE NOTE

With special thanks to our partners & sponsors.

Dear Market and Industry Guests, Welcome to Cape Town and thank you for joining us on this journey. We live through interesting times. Our system has been quite dysfunctional for some time, but we feel in the air the winds of change blowing in from all four corners of the world. Old models no longer serve and it is now that we have the opportunity to look at the world from more diverse perspectives. It is time to acknowledge the black, the queer, the womxn, the colonized and the privilege. It is time to redistribute, to decolonize, to transform, to nurture and to support a more balanced and fair ecosystem. In our Industry Program, we paid great attention to the historical lack of balance, and we hope that through our candid conversations we arrive at conclusions that plot a way forward. I invite you to participate, make your voice heard and confront the elephants in the room. It is also time to stop being just polite or politically correct, and I invite you to be constructive and to hold fast against any possible toxicity that may arise from these dialogues. There has been a lot of anger percolating in this country that is hosting you, and that anger is valid. In my eight years in South Africa, I have learned a great deal about this very complex place. Through my last film as a producer, I came to understand that there are deep wounds, some so deep as to put real lives, and a solid business, at stake. I have to admit that when I was approached by CTIFMF to step in as the Market Director, and take up a leadership position that meant I would have to negotiate the interests of ALL South African filmmakers, I found the prospect incredibly daunting. The reason I agreed was because I strongly believe in the nationbuilding power of cinema, and am prepared to do all in my power to help unite this divided community, through the art and business of film.

In the next decade, our Market and Industry Programme will strive to become the most relevant GATHERING space for the film community of the Global South. In this first edition, we will be inaugurating a number of initiatives, and welcoming many guests.

We will be presenting three innovative programmes in our landscape: ADAPT, which looks at forging links between the film and publishing industries; ENGAGE, which will explore ways of growing audiences for African cinema; and WIPs: Works in Progress to allow makers of unfinished films to access expert feedback when they need it most. Other aspects of the programme include opportunities to hear from and engage with leaders in disciplines as blockchain, cryptocurrency and VR . We will explore the possibility of cohesion between some of the most notable talent labs taking place in the African continent. We have also designed a programme of panels and workshops to be in equal parts stimulating and informative. Prioritising the development of much needed links between emerging industries, we have invited Brazil, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa to convene to explore how new financial instruments that serve the Global South can be implemented. We will engage with our European and North American partners towards more inclusive and balanced depictions of stories, fairer business models and re-positioning Africa as a continent that is vibrant, forever innovative, resilient, wealthy in spirit and resources. The time for Africa is NOW. As with all explorations of new territory, this may not be the smoothest ride, but it will be an exciting one. So dig in with us as we break new ground with the limited resources we have available to us. This market has been fuelled in the most part by a lot of good will from a small but passionate team who is proud to have you as their guests. Be generous as we fine tune the vision, and I take up my position at the helm of an industry gathering for the first time. Welcome to Cape Town, explore it, you will understand why I chose it as a home, Thank you for being a part of the emergence of a new space. Enjoy.

Sincerely, Elias Ribeiro Market Director

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

CEO’S FOREWORD

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The 2018 edition of the Cape Town International Film Festival is a reflection of the hard work, passion and dedication of many individuals both within the organising team as well as countless other partners in Cape Town, across South Africa, the rest of Africa, and indeed the world. As the CEO of the CTIFMF I could not be more proud to present the incredibly diverse and exciting program across both the Festival and Market.

As organising executive chairman of this event, we have brought together a good programme that stimulates both our clinical knowledge and human development to share and build our creative industries together. This will be through a combination of interesting lectures, and engaging “handson” workshops that will enrich our current knowledge and clinical skills. A holistic and interactive approach has been employed in planning the workshops and programming which we shall discuss and share the latest techniques and the management and practices to enhance our personal growth. On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all our international and local guests, colleagues and friends. The committee looks forward to meeting you all at the Festival this year. Welcome to the CTIFMF 2018 Edition!

Sincerely, Rafiq Samsodien

Both in terms of film selection, guest speaker invitations, jury representations, special events and partner activations, great care and thought has gone in to securing a program that is reflective of the South African and African film industries. As an event, the CTIFMF has grown in leaps and bounds since our inaugural edition in 2017, and we are grateful for the support of many in the regional, national, and international film industries. It is through this spirit of collaboration, one of the core themes of this year’s festival, that the industry will grow from strength to strength. I have watched over the past year as the team has grown and been inspired by the diverse expertise, opinions and voices that have all contributed to building what promises to be more than just a film festival, but rather a powerful gathering of expertise where professionals can network, promote their films, share ideas and skills, and emerging filmmakers can also have the opportunity to learn, engage, and most importantly, also be inspired by the excellence of their fellow filmmakers. It is also important though to remember, that at its heart, the event is also a celebration of the creative art of filmmaking. The CTIFMF’s 2018 theme also includes the calls to CREATE and CELEBRATE and celebrate we shall. Throughout the 10 days of the CTIFMF we invite all film lovers to immerse themselves in the dozens of creative masterpieces from across the globe. The film selection this year is a representation of African excellence, as well as global feast of cultural diversity. The CTIFMF 2018 will be a landmark event for the city of Cape Town and will undoubtably contribute to promoting the city as film and tourist destination. So as an industry and as a city, let us join together in the creative spirit of film and CREATE. COLLABORATE and CELEBRATE!

Sincerely, Nazeera Hartley-Roach

PANEL: POSITIONING AFRICA

10 October, 15:00-17:00, Comedy Club Panellists: Antonio Falduto, Cara Cusumano, Dorothee wenner And Filmmakers Amirah Tajdin, Don edkins Phillipa Ndisi-Herrmann, Zamo Mkhwanazi

Create, Collaborate and Celebrate film with the CTIFMF Industry programme: Panels, Workshops, Masterclasses

Moderator: Tiny Mungwe This panel will bring us up to speed with the technological progress that has been made in the industry. Moving through Vr and Ar this discussion will focus on the need for updating modes of viewing, and still putting emphasis on the African context.

PANEL: REFRAMING GENDER AND INTERSECTIONALITY IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN FILM INDUSTRY: TOWARDS A GREATER INCLUSION AND EMPOWERMENT OF BLACK WOMEN

Series like The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl have punched through into the foreground of pop culture by circumventing traditional channels and using the more accessible medium of web series to bring us intimate views of lives and worlds that are often marginalised in mainstream media. numerous such successes from the margins demonstrate the way in which the form can be used to dispel myths that veil the high demand for visual content by and for Africa and the diaspora. Makers share their insights into the challenges and possibilities.

PANEL: LADIMA FOUNDATION: PAN-AFRICAN COMMUNITY BUILDING FOR WOMEN 12 October, 11:15-13:00, Comedy Club

11 October, 11:15-13:00, Event Space

Panellists: Catherine Gitahi - Kenya Film Commission, Mildred okwo - producer and Director (nigeria), phillipa ndisi Herrmann – Filmmaker (Kenya), SwIFT representative

Curator: Themba Bhebhe (Flourishing Films)

Moderator: Tiny Mungwe

Panellists: Bianca Isaac, Bridget pickering, Jacky lourens, Maganthrie pillay (Masala Film works), Zoe ramuschu

The ladima Foundation has a pan-African and collaborative vision that prioritizes partnerships, cooperation, and inclusion. ladima will strive to forge long-lasting partnerships with like-minded organisations and to be a platform that celebrates tolerance, diversity and Afro-positivity through the art of filmmaking and related fields. For 105 minutes during this session, the conversation will be guided to focus and highlight if there is a need to build networks and collaborate as African women in film. Is it necessary for African women in film to collaborate? Will having a pan African approach to filmmaking improve opportunities for African women in film? The conversation is a preamble to the official launch of the Ladima Foundation A list, a database of women professionals in film, TV and content across Africa. The list aims to become the most comprehensive database of professional women in Africa. It will be open and accessible to all – shared widely especially with companies and agencies who may be looking for talented women to work on various productions and projects.

Moderator: Tiny Mungwe This will be a much-needed, frank discussion on the urgency of prioritising the creation of opportunity for black female filmmakers in Africa. #MeToo has become an all too familiar cry, as the hostility of the film industry as experienced by women becomes undeniable, and black women face double exclusion on the basis of both their gender and race. But where do we practically go from here, now that recognition of this truth is becoming more widespread? what kinds of interventions might be effective? How do we act on this moment?

PANEL: TAKE IT TO THE WEB

PANEL: PIONEERING SPACES CIRCLE

12 October, 15:00-17:00, Mezzanine Level Panellists: Brian Afande (Black rhino), Ingrid Kopp (electric South) This round circle will bring us up to speed with the technological progress that has been made in the industry. Moving through Vr and Ar this discussion will focus on the need for updating modes of viewing, and still putting emphasis on the African context. The blockchain revolution is transforming the relationship of content creators with their audiences, encouraging direct value exchange over the internet. Its gradual mainstream adoption is helping overcome some of the issues that surround exchange online. What might be the ways to find finance for VR? Will the structural advantages of blockchain and other new platforms for marketing and exhibition, for example, present more opportunities than challenges?

PANEL: CO-PRO THERAPY – RULES OF THE GAME

12 October, 15:00-17:00, Event Space Panellists: Bridget pickering, Diana elbaum, Himesh Kar , Linda Beath, Steven Markowitz Moderator: elias ribeiro Based on the principles of couples therapy, Co-pro Therapy creates a safe space to talk through the murkier questions of uneven power relations in international coproductions. elias ribeiro asks linda Beath and Himesh Kar to take a seat on his sofa to talk through some of the pitfalls and joys of these “it’s-complicated”, long-distance creative and business relationships. while also hearing the other side of the discussion from local filmmakers such as Steven Markowitz and Bridget Pickering. How do we deal with our partners’ baggage, set healthy boundaries, and find a way forward to our best selves? Couple goals!

BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION ROUND TABLE

13 October, 11:00-13:00, Seminar Room Panellists: Mike Auret, Dr Lwazi Manzi Facilitator: Maganthrie pillay The transformation agenda remains a key issue in the film industry: everyone agrees there is still a lot of work to be done and it’s happening too slowly. However, there are a few case studies where there is success:

Spier Films being one of them. what does transformation look and feel like in real life on a day to day basis? Dr Lwazi Manzi and Michael Auret talk about the new Spier partnership with Kule Chitepo, how it came about over time and what the key factors are to meaningful transformation within a company. Additionally Mike and Lwazi, having both sat in various boards including IPO (where Lwazi was co-chair 2016), South African Film Academy, SwIFT etc, and both having a firm track record of fringe industry initiatives (Sithengi, Cinecultureetc) will share their experience of the machinations of policy making and the steps to transformation at every rung of the value chain.

Panellists: Cynthia okaye (Curtis Brown), David Kayser (Cassarto & ramsey) A conversation with experts on artist representation. what are the advantages of working with a talent agent? what do agents look for when considering taking a client? What should filmmakers look for in an agent? when is the right time in one’s career to seek representation? what could a screenwriter, actor or director expect from the clientagent relationship?

MASTERCLASS: CRYPTO & BLOCKCHAIN

13 October, 15:00-17:00, Event Space Panellists: Toni Caradonna Toni Caradonna will share first-hand experience of financing a film with cryptocurrency, and how innovations in blockchain and financial technologies could be utilised in the film industry, especially on the African continent, where telecommunication technology is developing alongside a culture of micro-entrepreneurialism. How does it relate to crowdfunding as we know it? what doors does could crypto-technologies open for filmmakers? And, most importantly, how does it all work?

ADAP

They say that film is a language, and a picture is worth a thousand words. Whether a story plays out on a screen in front of our eyes, or in the imagined world conjured by the weaving of literary tapestry, the African continent has a rich tradition of storytelling language that extends to the earliest reaches of human memory. The ADApT forum runs over the 11th and 12th of october and is a programme that exists to create space for collaboration between artists who are working to bring to light and to life the dreams and realities of Africa in both the medium of the printed word and the cinematic image. CTIFMF will assemble top creative’s and professionals from the film and publishing industries in the spirit of collaboration – in line with the festival’s theme – to pioneer pathways of connection that will allow Africa’s cinematic talent to shine the work of its immense literary talent onto the big screen. open to all market delegates, ADApT will feature toolbox sessions, workshops and masterclasses with experts specialising in the field, that will explore potential models and practices that prioritise the uniqueness of understanding and capitalising on the possibilities of a dynamic, young and contemporary Africa. The programme seeks to delve into the pragmatic mechanisms of the process of translating word to film, from the technical to the legal, while also providing a look into the current landscape of publishing by presenting a selection of works by some of the literary world’s brightest stars, all of which are available for optioning. The programme is designed to facilitate cross-pollination between writers and filmmakers, with authors receiving coaching in pitching their work for a filmmaking audience, and producers being offered the opportunity to take one-on-one meetings with six brilliant African scribes, and the holders of the rights to their work. SYNOPSIS

red Ink is a gripping thriller, set in presentday Johannesburg, it has a distinctly local flavour and brings the city to life through all its contrasts and contradictions. when public relations consultant and ex-journalist lucy Khambule receives an unexpected call from napoleon Dingiswayo – a convicted serial killer, nicknamed The Butcher – her life takes a dramatic turn. Dingiswayo wants lucy to tell his story. Intrigued by Dingiswayo’s approach, lucy decides to take this opportunity to fulfil her life-long dream of writing a book. After their initial contact, Dingiswayo becomes an all-too- obliging subject and lucy soon discovers that her choice of topic is not for the faint-hearted. Soon after meeting him in pretoria’s notorious C-Max prison, lucy’s world is turned upside down by a series of violent and disturbing events. Dingiswayo is behind bars, but lucy begins to suspect that the brutal attacks may have something to do with him. who is this frightening man, and what motivates him? As lucy learns that there is more to Dingiswayo’s story than the police discovered, she is forced to decide what price she is willing to pay to pursue her dream.

In enver eleven’s city, fair-skinned people are a rarity and have been for centuries. They work as acrobats and jugglers or apply skin-darkening creams to conceal their condition. Johannesburg is the city that survived the end of the world thanks to the shelter provided by the thousands of miles of mining tunnels running beneath it. It’s enver’s job at the Agency to make sure that the end of the world doesn’t come again. He and his mentor, Shanumi Six, specialise in the hotspots of the twentieth century— Marrakech, rio de Janeiro, Tokyo—where they travel in search of an elusive enemy, guided by the collective intelligence of the Agency’s thinking machines which limit time travel to the bare minimum. when Shanumi vanishes on an assignment Enver finds himself in the middle of a catastrophe which will require him to put his assumptions to the test in an atmosphere of conspiracy and intrigue that harkens back (and forward) to John le Carré and ray Bradbury.

The republic of Gupta investigates what the Gupta brothers were up to during Thabo Mbeki’s presidency and how they got into the inner circle of president Jacob Zuma. It shines new light on their controversial ventures in computers, cricket, newspapers and TV news, and coal and uranium mining. And it explores their exposure by public protector Thuli Madonsela, their conflict with finance minister pravin Gordhan, and the real reasons behind the cabinet reshuffle of March 2017.

The Zimbabwean author recounts the experiences of her fellow compatriots trying to make a life in Jozi. The stories of these desperate immigrants is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. It’s 2008 and the height of Zimbabwe’s economic demise. A group of passengers is huddled in a Toyota Quantum about to embark on a treacherous expedition to the City of Gold. Amongst them is Gugulethu, who is hoping to be reconciled with her mother.

SYNOPSIS

leke is a troubled young man living in the suburbs of Cape Town. He develops strange habits of stalking people, stealing small objects and going from doctor to doctor in search of companionship rather than cure. Through a series of letters written to him by his nigerian father whom he has never met, leke learns about a family curse; a curse which his father had unsuccessfully tried to remove. Bom Boy is a well-crafted, and complex narrative written with a sensitive understanding of both the smallness and the magnitude of a single life.

Zukiswa wanner sets off on an adventurefilled road trip with her partner and son. Travelling through six borders, on busses and on the backs of trucks, wanner celebrates the 10 years since her debut novel, The Madams, was published by having a reading in as many countries as possible. Between protests against bond notes in Zimbabwe and celebrating her birthday, wanner reconnects with good friends and gets the opportunity to give her son an African education that he’ll cherish for years to come. This comedy of manners for Mzansi roasts a desirable woman’s lobola’s worth of sacred cows. Middle-class attitudes on hired help, adultery, Bee, child rearing, cultural identity, shopping and HIV-status are lashed by Thandi’s sharp tongue.

ENGAG

The famous myth that, “If you build it, they will come,” does not actually, as one would imagine, originate in the annals of ancient history, but rather in the 1989 Kevin Costner baseball film, Field of Dreams. But it might be time to stop taking advice from Hollywood movies, because it will only be through inventive ways of actively reaching out to audiences close to home that the full potential of cinema on the African continent will be realised. enGAGe aims to push the importance of audience design and engagement to the foreground of the conversation, to foster a more holistic conception of the film value chain and encourage a more sustainable eco-system for film industries on the continent. An intensive seven-day workshop under the stewardship of creative producer and consulting specialist Valeria richter will see a group of eight marketing and industry professionals coming together to foreground the importance of engaging local audiences to shift the focus of imaginations and resources, back onto films made on home ground. Going beyond traditional marketing models, participants will be equipped with the most cutting-edge strategies to access and grow targeted audiences in constructive, relevant ways. They will

exercise these skills through handson experience with real case studies. Keeping with an ethos of tangible outcomes, The enGAGe workshop intertwines with the CTIFMF’s works in progress programme, and will assign each participant a project for which they will ultimately present an Audience Design Strategy, and compete for a cash prize and the opportunity to form an audience strategy for the CTIFMF’s next edition. The central premise of workshop is the assumption that it is not enough to just blindly hope that films will reach the audiences we wish them to, and the programme will place in a pressure cooker some of the sharpest minds in the worlds of distribution, exhibition, publicity, creative production and programming to advance Afro-centric ways to ensure a bright filmic future on the continent for viewers and makers alike.

WiPs You’ve been through the exhilarating process of production. The film, as they say, is in the can. Now sunlight is a distant memory and you’re spending most of your life in an edit suite, debating which parts of your vision are going to end up on the cutting room floor. Completion is the only thing on your mind.

During the intense focus of postproduction, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture, despite the fact that the process of the cut is arguably the most formative. When you can no longer see the wood through the trees, wouldn’t it be great to have a panel of trusted experts to help you step back and reflect? Is your plot line full of holes? Will audiences connect to the characters? How might a little spit and polish take your movie from mediocre to masterpiece? CTIFMF recognises the crucial value of receiving constructive, knowledgeable feedback during the post-production process. African filmmakers need sustained support throughout their projects’ life cycles to be able to navigate the evolving needs of audiences around the world, beginning at home. So we have gathered an expert cohort of fresh eyes - including those of international programmers, sales agents, broadcasters, distributors, exhibitors and talent agents - to help filmmakers connect the dots between making a film and showing a film.

Five promising feature films and four documentaries from across the African continent have been selected to screen their unfinished works to an illustrious group of authorities in a protected environment that is designed to be supportive, empowering and constructively critical. Filmmakers will also receive one-to-one mentorship in a “creative surgery”. The panel has been crafted to span a spectrum of know-how, on a local and international scale, to ensure a careful balance of considerations in a world-facing Africa. Ultimately, in-kind post-production support will be awarded to the most promising projects (with the generous support of Priest Post, Rhapsody, The Refinery, The Work Room Audio Post, Post Production South Africa and The Moving Billboard Picture Company), to help these cinematic buds to blossom into something spectacular, like the springtime fynbos in Cape Town. *WIP screenings are by invitation only and will take place at 09:00 and 11:00 every day from the 10-13 of October at cinema Nu Metro 6 in the V&A Waterfront.

The Cape Town International Film Market & Festival would like to thank Alessandra Speciale and our sponsors who have kindly contributed to the Works In Progress programme.

As lusala settles in, he attempts to fit in with his mechanic colleagues and shrug off his anxiety and dejection, but his troubles take a stronger hold of him. Days later, lusala’s youngest sister Bakhita, who has been away in boarding school, runs away and unexpectedly shows up at his flat. when he takes her in and opts to return her to onesmus and Beatrice’s house, she begs him to let her stay. He begrudgingly agrees, telling her she can hide out in his flat for a while. THE EXPERTS

European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) is a professional training, project development and networking organization for audiovisual producers, and will this year have a presence at CTIFMF as they seek to establish networks on the continent. We are delighted to host, together with the Independent Producers Organisation, our first collaboration with EAVE, who will present a programme that will lay the metaphorical fibreoptic cables to link African producers into their strong international network, which exists to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills which will strengthen independent production. The inaugural EAVE Indaba will be a space of connection. EAVE runs leading training opportunities for producers worldwide, and believes that “the support of independent voices, creative imagination and culturally driven companies within the global media industries is an urgent necessity in the 21st century.” At this edition of CTIFMF, EAVE will provide some tantalising insight into the kind of work that they do, with a view to expanding their activity at the festival and on the continent in the future. EAVE INDABA will select 5 African and 5 European producers to participate in a year long program, where 10 film projects will be developed through three residential workshops and presented in our 2020 Market. In line with the festival’s objectives, this short, taster programme will offer real outcomes, with two leading industry experts, Lina Beath and Diana Elbaum, attending the festival as mentors to share invaluable professional knowledge and tools. They will work closely with 12 handpicked South African producers in association with the Independent Producers Organization , presenting masterclass sessions that will focus on finance and the intricacies of co-production with the global North, as well as conducting closed producers’ circle sessions.

WORk CAFé The Work Cafe is a space created to harness the collective power of some of the more exciting emergent national film industries in the world by bringing together policymakers and professionals to brainstorm innovative ways of developing functional and productive networks across the Global South. Representatives from some of Africa and Latin America’s more established film industries will convene to initiate dialogue and share best practices and mechanisms for film financing in the global south. Digging into the details of policy, finance systems and rebate and incentive schemes, two extended closed sessions on the 13 October will see representatives from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Brazil presenting the ins and outs of the infrastructure for film in each country. EMERGING TALENT LABS CIRCLE

SpoTlIGHT on ITAlIAN CINEmA

The fact that Africa is rich with the raw materials of creative talent and untold story is undeniable. However, this abundant natural resource needs to be nurtured and cultivated if it is to flourish. This means that promising filmmakers need to be given the tools to polish their craft to a standard that does justice to their vision, from the point of development through to the exhibition and distribution of the finished film. It is also crucial that they are given the opportunity to be exposed to the practices of the industry at an international scale. For these reasons, we have invited several major talent incubators working with African film who run programmes that focus on a variety of professional disciplines and stages in the life-cycle of a film or career of a filmmaker. The following pages give an overview of the labs that will be represented. Apart from public presentations of their programs, these delegates will take part in closed strategic sessions to discuss the next five years, try to identify common ground and work towards a more collaborative model, with free-flowing information between the different emerging talent initiatives. The main goal is to launch collectively an African Film Institute, an organization that in the future not only nurtures, but also funds talent.

This specialised lo-Fi Cinema panel invites independent filmmakers who have successfully sailed the seas of making films with little means to do so, to account for both the limitations and freedoms presented by low- and micro-budget productions. 11:00 - 13:00 | SEMINAR ROOM (W17) MEET THE MAKERS: Lol With Mandela, Running With The Wind, Mandela the Real Pan-Africanist Participants: Faith Isiakpere (Director), Firdoze Bulbulia (Producer) Faith Isiakpere and Firdoze Bulbulia speak about the experience of working across formats of the fiction short, fiction feature and documentary. 11 OCTObER

From the 10-12 October, our new Meet the Makers sessions will be serving your daily dose of inspiration. Throughout these three days of the market programme, delegates can expect to receive more than their recommended daily allowance of talent and brilliance by enjoying conversations with some of African cinema’s stars of the moment. Teams behind some of the most exciting African productions in recent years will share their stories of success, controversy, and overcoming adversity - not to mention the fruits of their labour - at CTIFMF this year.

In candid conversation with audiences, filmmakers working in a variety of disciplines will open up about the challenges of the process of bringing a film into the world from inception to release. In the spirit of celebration, the informal sessions will go behind the scenes to explore the backstories of some of the most impactful and well-travelled films to feature prominently on local and international screens recently. A number of the films will be presented as part of the CTIFMF screening programme, giving audiences a chance to place filmmaker insights in the context of the finished work.

VR&360 In recent years, technology has advanced at hyperspeed, multiplying our power to cross the barrier of two dimensions in our storytelling. 360 Video and virtual reality have expanded the scope for experiencing content with new immersive intensity. But such a quantum leap in ways of making film brings with it the challenge of finding conventions and models that work for this new form, the needs of which are entirely different from those of its twodimensional counterparts. with its wealth of untapped creative worlds, Africa is perfectly poised to be a leader in the pioneering new aesthetics for the twenty-first century. CTIFMF will create a space for these exciting new directions to be explored and elaborated in a variety of ways throughout the programme, always maintaining a focus on achieving excellence in both the business and art of emerging media. The pioneering Space session will explore, along with some other promising advancements in technological tools available to the industry, some of the mechanics of developing funding and distribution strategies for Vr. Brian Afande of Black rhino 360 will be hosting a hands-on story lab that will see three filmmakers receive closed-workshop training in the art and technique of making images when the boundary of a rectangular frame in not a factor. BLACK RHINO 360 STORY LAB

After nearly a year of strategic planning and development behind the scenes, the CTIFMF, in partnership with Snake Nation and the YOMYOMF Foundation is proud to announce the Interpretations inter-continental film competition in South Africa. Interpretations is a short film contest, an initiative from the USA based YOMYOMF Foundation, the non-profit arm of the digital production company YOMYOMF (YouOffendMeYouOffendMyFamily), devoted to fostering and developing Asian American and other underrepresented voices in film and entertainment. Snake Nation, is once again working with the festival to promote young and emerging talent. The objective of this competition is to encourage aspiring South African filmmakers to develop their own original and unique voice and to encourage filmmakers to find their own take on the material and be as creative with it as they can. The script is broad and fluid enough so that one director could craft a comedy from it, another a stylish music video, another an action film, etc. Once the films were submitted, a distinguished panel of judges from both the studio and independent filmmaking worlds reviewed the submissions and narrowed them down to fifteen semi-finalists. From those fifteen, three finalists/winners will be selected—two decided by the judges and one by online audience voting. The winning filmmakers will have an opportunity to work on a full production of their project with the Snake Nation team at Georgia State University Creative Media Industries Institute under the mentorship of seasoned industry professionals. Snake Nation, YOMYOMF Foundation and the CTIFMF will also make an effort to introduce promising filmmakers, whether they are a finalist or not, to appropriate industry mentors to help create more focused opportunities for growth and networking.
