Project 1: Watch Face Design

Objectives Using Adobe Illustrator to make the watch face (final rendering details can be done in Photoshop). Design an original clock face with a detailed mechanical illustration rendering quality. This should be a straight on view of the clock face with appropriate frame or shape to hold clock. If you prefer, this can be a watch with a wrist band. The design should have incremental markings for hours and minutes, though not necessarily with a traditional look. The

I had the idea for this when I remembered owning a Swatch watch as a child. I loved that watch. A simple tap on the surface of the watch would make the hands spin around showcase adifferent timezone. I really enjoyed that watch. As a result I wanted a watch that would encourage kids to have fun and get outside and be “limber.” I want a watch that would be just as flexible as children are. A watch that keeps up with children and help them get home in time too.

clock should be functional–meaning the viewer should be able to determine time. This can be done with design elements, or numbers/roman numerals. Additional information, such as date, compass, etc. can be aded if desired. One of the key technical objectives is to place incremental markings in perfect position. Another key element is to render the materials in a way that gives a sense of the material (shiny, smooth, dull, textured, etc.)

Project 2: Touch Screen Controller

Objectives Design a touchscreen controller with graphics that could be used as an in-dash player for a car, home stereo, or video screen. The touchscreen controls should be realistically rendered and have a sense of dimension.

The player is based off retro technology and I wanted to create something that had the emulations of a Ipod or similar music players without losing that midcentury touch. The most defining feature I think is that this is meant to be bag or pocket sized while still being very lowtech. Hence the attenna for reception.

Disclaimer: Here at GalaxyTech we pride ourselves in developing the best technological devices to suit your everyday needs. Although we do our best to innovate at the highest standards we cannot gurantee the device may work. Considering the fact that its 1956 and the fact that this comes in color is enough to be impressed by. Don’t be that big of an asshole now.

Project 3: Figure Photo with Vector Graphics

Objectives This project will require integration of your original photography of a figure that is retouched and masked in Photoshop with vector graphics created in Adobe Illustrator. The final composition should have vectors which are in front, behind, and weaving through the figure. The vectors can be recognizable forms, large letters, or abstract geometric designs. The photographic image should blend with the computer generated image in a way that has depth and dimension.

The graphics should add emphasis or a feeling of exaggerated movement or energy. The more successful projects are generally more abstract with imagery. Trying to place a photographic figure in a cartoon vector environment is a lot harder to execute well than a figure that has vector graphics as an embellishment.

I’m enamoured with polygons and 3D abstract shapes. I think that they add a interesting shift compared to the more flowing and organic vecotr style features that most people like. There’s also something nice about playing with gemotric figures to make them more organic that is a fun process. The photo itself is taken from a seperate project and photoshoot.

Project 4: Physical Output

Objectives The idea of this project is to offer an alternative to the use of the computer as a tool for creating print or web based images. For this project, use the computer for planning, graphics, or production with the end result being something tangible. The purpose of the computer is to add speed, accuracy, or flexibility to the creation of work, rather than keep it selfcontained with software. In other words, to make something real that you can touch and appreciate.

Project 5: Modern Surrealism

Objectives This project is a combination of creative photo retouching and digital imaging. You will need to use photographs that you take as the source material, and then blend them together to create a realistic image that couldn’t exist in reality. This can be presented as art for art’s sake, or put into commercial context, as used in an advertisement or social commentary.

The primary goals for this are: To create a striking, thought provoking, or humorous image. To make use of Photoshop for seamlessly blending and retouching photographic elements. To be challenged with concept development, pre-production planning, and solving problems.

Optical illusions are naturally interesting trying to recreate them in different ways. My hands themselves are very attractive so it was a check seeing them in radically different colors. Colorwise I feel that the fun poppiness of the idea come together nicely and emphasize the fun of the design.

Project 6: Text as Art

Objectives Create a poster composed primarily using typography that is highly rendered (using Photoshop, with the option of incorporating Illustrator, Maya, Painter). This means that the type has an artistic treatment beyond what word processing software can do. The purpose of the poster is your choice-anything from a serious statement to simply a fun play on words is okay.

More or less i wanted to take the element signs of elements and render them in the way they would be found in daily use. Here is gas for Nitrogen, neon signs for Neon, and balloons for Helium. I enjoyed Helium the most seeing as it was my first time using 3D in Photoshop.

Project 7: Furniture Renderings

Objectives Using only Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop, create a realistic, detailed graphic of a mechanical object. You must take your own photographic reference-no downloaded images. Choose one of the following or propose an alternative (must be okayed before starting).

Project 8: Independent Project

Objectives Think of something you would like to do that involves the use of software in a significant way. This project is very open. You can take this in a more illustration based direction, or make a full design piece out of it. Packages, games, toys, or fine art type of projects are also open for consideration. As usual, no stock photos or use of any images that don’t belong to you. Think of what you can draw, paint, sculpt, photograph, and create digitally. These ideas will be presented to the class. Think of something you can get excited about doing and is relevant to your

professional interests. What would the employer of your dream job like to see?
