Prompt: All of the projects for this semester should be organized within pages of a digital notebook. The contents of the pages should be composed well with logically hierarchy, and based upon a grid structure. There should be text explaining the project goals or the meaning so that someone viewing the book can understand the logic behind what you created. While this is not a graphic design class, this is a class about organizing elements in a composition, so structure and order is important. Using a grid is important so that the various pages with different content appear unified and easy to quickly view.

Compositional Uses for Line

Prompt: Use a camera to create a series of photographic compositions that demonstrate how line can be used within a composition. Line should be used prominently in each image.

These photographs must be taken outdoors and focus on naturally occurring or man-made inanimate structures. No people or animals. The content of these images should not be physically arranged or manipulated by the student — the point of this assignment is to find ways show line in your compositions using only what can be seen — not what can be created.

Compositional Analysis

Prompt: Analyze 12 artistic compositions to determine what techniques the artist or designer responsible relied on to shape the viewer's experience. As you study the compositions, note where your eye naturally goes first, then where it moves second, and eventually moves around the image or off of it.

‘Ted’ - Triangle/Pyramid

1. A balance has been established in the two figures and the text and a sense of unity in the colors as well. Since there is so much white on the image the green really comes out compare to the browns at the bottom of the page in the lower two figures. The text above demonstrates another sense of rhythmn as well in its choice of same text and bold green to emphasize. 2. The main focal point is the text in bold green. Since it’s also fairly near the center of the image it draws the eye easier. And because it is also text we are more keen to find soething to read first. 3. I feel like the theme/mood of the poster is well conveyed. Since this is a

simple comedy film making it over the top isn’t in the style of the film. 4. I feel like the overall layout of ther poster is well done. I am drawn to the two figures in because of the text than back at the rest of the text at the top. It feels like two triangles stacked on top each other at points.

Propaganda Poster

Prompt: Pick an issue that you feel strongly about (the environment, globalization, the economy, war, etc.) and create an 11"x17" poster promoting your point of view. The poster should be created in Adobe Illustrator.

There should be at least three distinct layers of depth in the poster (foreground, middle ground, background). The poster cannot use real type. Instead, create shapes that look like letters and words but are completely made up (as if you were writing in an unfamiliar language other than English). Repeat these shapes as type is repeated in words. Concentrate on making interesting shapes that interact with the rest of the composition in fun and unexpected ways.

Creating 10 Depth with Value

Prompt: Challenge yourself to see how much of a sense of depth can be created. For this project, try to create more depth in your picture than anyone else in the class while sticking to the guidelines. Use scale, overlap, detail, and value to create this. Create a 11 inch wide by 8.5 inch high document in Illustrator or Photoshop.

Prompt: There are common Vacation/Happy Relaxtion expressions that relate color and mood, such as “I saw red” for anger, “feeling blue” for sadness, and “green with envy”. But as artists, we need to know what exact hue, value, and saturation best communicates the expression or suggests the meaning.

Prompt: Compose a complex abstract design around specific points that you want a viewer's eye to go to first and second. This means that when a viewer is first shown the image, their natural tendency will be to look first at the primary focal point then shift attention to the secondary focal point.

Prompt: Compose a complex representational illustration around specific points that you want a viewer's eye to go to first and second. Like with assignment #12, use multiple techniques to guide the viewer's eye to make the effect as strong as possible. The composition should also demonstrate asymmetrical balance and convey a sense of depth through use of overlap, scale, detail, warm and cool color usage, saturation, and contrast. No specific color scheme requirements, but the overall composition should appear be well planned with color, using it to help push the focal point goals describe below.

Prompt: Rhythm in the visual arts is very closely related to rhythm in music. When creating a musical composition, rhythm is achieved by repeating a pattern of musical notes.

This repetition creates a musical line which flows through the air. In visual art, the visual notes are static but they are experienced like music as we move through the design. In visual art, rhythm is achieved when the lines, shapes, colors, textures, or patterns in clothing and accessories are arranged to lead the viewer's eye easily from one part of the design to another.
