Three Chanukah songs

In 2007, I stayed with Eliška who welcomed me as if I were a close relative. A guide at Terezín, she had passed on her story to her granddaughter, Terezia, who, in turn shares it with visitors to Terezín.
At this moment, when we all resist sinking into a Covid kwetchfest, we might spare a thought to those few survivors. Eliška, who died aged 87, just 3 years ago, was never defeated. Out of 22 members of her family, only she and her mother survived. But there she was, without a community, but still lighting her candles. And as she said, “I never go out without my hiking boots and my swimsuit because you never know, you just never know.” For more on the Cambridge Czech scroll project see:
