Diocesan Theme Prayer: Almighty and generous God, You are the Creator and Giver of all that is good. We thank you and praise you for the beauty of the earth, for our work, our families, our loved ones and all of the gifts which we have been given. By your grace may we show gratitude by sharing what we have received, always mindful that in serving others we are serving You. Guided by that same grace help us to be good stewards, who care for your earth, and who work to preserve it for future generations. The Preparation Introit Hymn # 761. . . . . . . . . . . . .“We Sing The Glorious Conquest” 1.

We sing the glorious conquest 2. O glory most excelling before Damascus’ gate, that smote across his path, when Saul, the church's spoiler O light that pierced and blinded came breathing threats and hate; the zealot in his wrath, the ravening wolf rushed forward O voice that spake within him full early to the prey; the calm, reproving word, but lo, the Shepherd met him, O love that sought and held him and bound him fast today. the bondman of his Lord!

3. O Wisdom, ordering all things in order strong and sweet, what nobler spoil was ever cast at the Victor's feet? What wiser master-builder e'er wrought at thine employ than he, till now so furious thy building to destroy?

4. Lord, teach your church the lesson, still in her darkest hour of weakness and of danger, to trust thy hidden power: thy grace by ways mysterious the wrath of man can bind, and in thy boldest foeman thy chosen saint can find. 2

The Ministry of the Word The First Lesson. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Acts 26:9-21 Read by: Veronica Pierson/Justin Jean Pierre, Deputy Head Boy BMES

Reader:

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

After he was in prison for some time, Paul was permitted to state his case before King Agrippa. Paul said to the King, ‘Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10And that is what I did in Jerusalem; with authority received from the chief priests, I not only locked up many of the saints in prison, but I also cast my vote against them when they were being condemned to death. 11By punishing them often in all the synagogues I tried to force them to blaspheme; and since I was so furiously enraged at them, I pursued them even to foreign cities. 12 ‘With this in mind, I was travelling to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, 13when at midday along the road, your Excellency, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. 14When we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.” 15I asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord answered, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 16But get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you. 17I will rescue you from your people 4

and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you 18to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” 19 ‘After that, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout the countryside of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and do deeds consistent with repentance. 21For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. The Second Lesson. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Galatians 1:11-24

Read by: Dion McKinney/ Farah Flowers, 12th grade student BMES

Reader:

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians.

For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. 5

14

I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away at once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days; 19but I did not see any other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. 20In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie! 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, 22and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; 23they only heard it said, ‘The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.’ 24And they glorified God because of me. Gradual Hymn # 228 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“Immortal, Invisible” {BMES School Hymn}

1.

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

2.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

3.

To all life thou givest, to both great and small; In all life thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish; but naught changeth thee.

4.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; All laud we would render; O help us to see ‘Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee. 6

Gospellor: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mathew. All: Glory to Christ our Saviour. Jesus said, ‘See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. 19When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; 20for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; 22and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Gospellor: This is the Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to Christ our Lord.

On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.” And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Communion Hymns Hymn # 571. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“And Now, O Father” 1. And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.

2. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim; for lo! Between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord. 3. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal; O fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast, O do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. 4. And so we come; O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so awful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill; in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

4. Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would His favor secure; Richer by far is the heart's adoration, Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 5. 3. Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil's might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill: Anthems be to Thee addrest, God in Man made manifest.

4. Sun and moon shall darkened be, Stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, All will see His glorious sign; All will then the trumpet hear, All will see the Judge appear: Thou by all wilt be confest, God in Man made manifest.

5. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, Mirrored in thy holy Word; May we imitate thee now, And be pure, as pure art thou; That we like to thee may be At thy great Epiphany; And may praise thee, ever blest, God in Man made manifest.

Reflection “Paul addressed the people in these words.” Acts 22:3 Did you know that today’s first reading is one of three accounts of Paul’s conversion in the Book of Acts? The first, in Acts 9:1-22, describes the event itself. The other two are speeches in which Paul is sharing his conversion story. One is in today’s reading from Acts 22, and the other is a few chapters later in Acts 26.

Each of these readings is a little different. That’s because Paul was telling his story to different audiences. He highlighted some details and omitted others, depending on who was listening to him. In today’s first reading, he is speaking to a Jewish crowd that wanted to seize him because they thought he had rejected the Mosaic law. So he stresses his devout Jewish heritage and training (Acts 22:3-5). In Acts 26, Paul is addressing a Gentile court. So he stresses the “heavenly vision” he has received—something a Gentile might identify with— and even uses a Greek proverb about “kicking against the goad” to express the futility of fighting the divine will (26:14, 19). As you share your own story of God’s work in your life, follow Paul’s example and consider who is listening to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what they need to hear. Remember Paul’s words: “I have become all things to all, to save at least some” (1 Corinthians 9:22). Your elderly neighbor might need to hear how the Lord comforted you in a time of loneliness. A coworker with young kids might appreciate hearing how God blessed your efforts to pray during busy seasons of life. A friend at church might be heartened to hear about your experience of God’s presence during Eucharistic Adoration. Every day you will encounter many different situations and different people. That means you will have multiple opportunities to speak about the Lord! So today on the feast of his conversion, allow St. Paul, the master evangelist, to teach you how to share the good news of Jesus with everyone you meet. “Lord, give me St. Paul’s wisdom to speak about your work in my life to anyone who will listen.” Psalm 117:1-2 Mark 16:15-18 Source: The Word Among Us
