Introit Hymn

1.

Whom Jesus loves so well?

We helpless sinners lay, And, to his glory, year by year, Until in tender love he came Thy joy and honour tell? To bear the curse away.

3. Andtheehechosefromwhomtotake 4. The babe he lay upon thy breast, True flesh his flesh to be; To thee he cried for food; In it to suffer for our sake, Thy gentle nursing soothed to rest By it to make us free. The Incarnate Son of God.

5. O wondrous depth of grace divine 6. Joy to be mother of the Lord, That he should bend so low! And thine the truer bliss, And, Mary, oh, what joy ’twas thine Ineverythought, anddeed, and word In his dear love to know; To be for ever his.

2

7. And as he loves thee, mother dear, 8. Jesu, the virgin’s Holy Son, We too will love thee well; We praise thee and adore, And, to his glory, year by year, Who art with God the Father One Thy joy and honour tell. And Spirit evermore. Amen.

The Ministry of the Word

The First Lesson. . .

Reader: A Reading from the Book of Numbers.

Numbers 21:4-9

Read by: Tirzah Carey/A.C.M

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. 5The people spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.’ 6Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. 7The people came to Moses and said, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.’ So Moses prayed for the people. 8And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.’ 9So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

18.They abhorred all manner of food * and drew near to death's door.

19.Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, * and he delivered them from their distress.

20.He sent forth his word and healed them * and saved them from the grave.

21.Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy * and the wonders he does for his children.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning , is now, and shall be forever. Amen.

The Second Lesson. . . .

Ephesians 2:1-10

Read by: Miah Sears/A.C.M.

Reader: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.

You were dead through the trespasses and sins 2in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God 9not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

The Holy Gospel. .

Gospellor: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you.

.John 3:14-21

Gospellor: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Jesus said, Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 ‘

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.’

Gospellor: This is the Gospel of Christ.

All: Praise to Christ our Lord.

Reflection

“Everyone who believes in him . . . “ John 3:16

Today’s Gospel reading is full of promises to “everyone who believes” in Jesus. They will have eternal life (John 3:15). They will not perish (3:16). They will not be condemned (3:18). But what does it mean to believe in him?

We might think that believing in Jesus means being convinced that he is who he says he is. And it does. We agree with the truth that he is the Messiah, the Son of God. We acknowledge his miracles and the wisdom of his teachings. But intellectual assent will get us only so far. As James says, “Even the demons believe that and tremble” (2:19).

The belief that Jesus is talking about here is an act of the will; it’s a decision to place our trust in Someone whom we know and love. That kind of personal connection with the Lord can spark a deep faith that changes the way we think and behave. St. John Henry Newman talked about the importance of our relationship with Jesus when he said, “No man will be a martyr for a conclusion” (An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent).

But even deeper, and at the heart of everything else, faith is a gift of grace from God. Our belief is more than intellectual assent or an act of the will. It’s a response to God’s initiative. His grace opens our minds to the truth and moves us to place our lives in Jesus’ hands. Belief isn’t possible without God’s initial intervention. The Catechism puts it succinctly: “In faith, the human intellect and will cooperate with divine grace” (155).

Today is a day overflowing with grace. So turn to the Lord and affirm your faith. Tell Jesus that you believe he is who he says he is. Entrust your life to him. As you do, your faith will continue to grow, and you will trust even more deeply in Jesus’ promise of eternal life.

“Jesus, I believe in you!”

Think on this! An Examination of Conscience for Lent

Jesus “went off to the mountain to pray.” (Mark 6:46)

 Are there subtle—or not so subtle—ways that I have ignored my relationship with God?

 Have I made time every day to meet God in prayer? Do I read, reflect, and act on his word in Scripture?

 Have I given priority to God on Sundays and holy days by attending Mass and making a special effort to seek him?

Holy Confirmation

The following changes to the Rite of Holy Confirmation took effect on Sunday 3rd December 2023:

 Holy Confirmation will remain in use and not just as the Gateway to Holy Communion but as a mature expression of faith – which it has always been.

 The age for Holy Confirmation is now 15-16 years old.

 Confirmation will be preceded by a time of instruction, spiritual formation, and interaction with church leadership.

Those young persons and adults that meet the minimum criteria for Holy Confirmation are asked to contact the parish office.
