Unit 27- Task 1 part 1

short hand communication

This photograph displays short hand communication as it is features the United Stated of Americas flag which is a universal symbol. The flag is a universal symbol because many people believe that the flag represents their beliefs or culture. In this image there is a boy along side many other American waving their national flags to show their patriotism. The flag uses 3 colours to represent America. Blue, red and white. It also uses stars. The blue represents vigilance. The white represents innocence and the red represents the power of being able to rise. This is significant because it tells us that each individual in the image waving their flag is waving their flag out of pride as they stand for each colour on the flag. The stars on the flag represent everyone despite their different backgrounds uniting together. Someone who views the image can see that this photograph communicates pride and unity without the use of verbal communication.

Mise-en-scene

This image is my example of mise-en-scene. The camera angle displayed is a two shot featuring a mother and her daughter sat on a table doing their make up. The two shot is significant because it’s taken from far enough for us to be able to see their body language and what they are doing. It shows a mother looking into her mirror whilst doing her hair and make up and the little girl is ding the same thing. I believe that the photographer was trying to display an important message through the use of this image. The photograph uses props. The main prop is the mirror. A mirror shows your reflection and you could say that the little girl is the reflection of the mum because she’s copying what she’s doing. The photograph was taken in black and white. Some photographers remove colour from their images to emphasis something negative. Bright colours are known to represent happiness therefore; a lack of colour could represent sadness. The image may portray a sad story because it shows that children and easily influenced and are a reflection/ copy of their parents so parents need to be careful about what they do around their kids because their kids will copy them. The black and white also represents emptiness and the location could to. In this the background seems to be very plain. The walls have no art on them and the tables have nothing on them.

This photo shows women in French Indochina praying for their husbands at war in 1950. The photo shows 2 women praying. The people are praying on the floor and the photographer is standing above them at a high angle shot. The positioning of the camera is important because the shot could have been captured at many other shots however, they chose to angle the camera down. This high angle shot is important as it makes the wives look vulnerable and powerless because they don’t know how their husbands are doing. The lighting in the photograph Is natural lighting from the sky the majority of the sunlight is coming in from the right hand side in the photo this suggest that there is a wall blocking sunlight from the left hand side. This creates darkness. As the camera is pointed down there is no background however, there is the floor. The floor shows bricks and a handmade praying mat. The handmade mat suggest that they are poor especially because the area in Asia they are in this adds on to their shoes which is the prop used.

Anchoring

This front cover from the magazine ‘Jones’ features the actress Yvonne Strahovski. The image is significant becasue it shows female power which is rare in the media. One thing which is significant about this shot is the possitioning of the shot. It’s a medium shot. This shot allows the audience to read the persons body language. As we can see she is standing with her hand on her waist. This pose connotes power. The pose is often assosicated with stubborness which suggest that she’s addimate and has a stong opinion about something which the general society is against. Another reason why this shot is significant is because its taken at eye level. The eye level shot is significant because it touches the audience more. Her looking directly into the camera makes her look more powerful and it suggest that she’s got something important to say. It makes it more direct. Another significant factor in this magazine which makes it bold and stand out is her clothing and make up. Usually magazines featuring women use front covers of them with very little clothing and extreme make up and often both. Unlike those this outfit is sophisticated and she has a normal amount of make up on. This is empowering. The colour of the fonts used are interesting because compared to her outfit they do not use bolld colours or a bold font. They have made her the main focus.

This front cover from the ‘Sun’ newspaper uses the phrase “Who do EU think you are” in capital letters to capture the appeal to the nation. The phrase is significant as it uses an abbreviation European Union so that it is read as you making it a play on words. The pun is effective because it makes it seem kind of funny. However, the rhetorical question evens the tone out to show that it’s serious. It also appeals people because they know that the article will be controversial so reading it will create a range of different opinions from a variety of different types of citizens in the nation. For example a young person in education or just left uni from a working class background may see leaving the EU completely different compared to someone who is middle aged from a higher classed background. Not only does the front cover use language and font to appeal to the nation it also uses imagery. Imagery Is important whilst creating a piece of text for something like a newspaper article as it breaks up the text and represents it without having to read it. For example, this front cover uses a photo of a women around late 20’s/ early 30s screaming from outrage. This shows that she is fuming with brexit and it represents the rest of nation.

Denotation and connotation.

This front cover newspaper for the sun is appealing as it uses language to capture the attention of football fans. One example of a language technique used is rhyming the words ‘back, sack and crack’ to describe Moyes emotion. By rhyming this the moral of the story is told. The ‘old Trafford exclusive’ would also appeal to many football fans as it suggests that there will be exclusive news. This will grab the attention of many people. Imagery is also used to market this product. There is a enlarged photograph of Moyes which is a close up. The close up is important because it emphasis his mood. The photo shows that he’s mad. If you look you can see his eyes are red. This suggest that he’s been teary. His eyes also look genuinely sad. His eyebrows are also crossed which is a common facial expression for anger as well as sadness. The background is also black. This suggest that the photo has been edited. The editors may have added more red to his eyes as well as blue. If the photo was not edited there would not be a black background.

This image features a boy holding a gun up to his head whilst smiling. There is juxtaposition between the boy and the gun as they represent polar opposite things. For example, a child of symbolizes innocence. Often if a child is doing something that a normal person of their age shouldn’t do in a movie the audience usually have an empathetic reaction towards the character whereas, a gun or any other weaponry prop connotes the opposite of innocence and when props like guns are seen on films it often makes the audience feel on edge or unsettles as it foreshadows something bad. It suggests violence and danger. Meaning that there’s a lot of contrast between the two. The fact that the boy is smiling could show that children are innocent because someone who is feeling the need to end their life would not be smiling. The image is taken in black and white which is significant because it could be used to show emptiness. Emptiness is known to be the feeling of someone who is suicidal. The boys clothing look like he’s a working child. This could be the reasons for him holding a gun to his head because he’s not having a childhood.

This Magnum photograph pictures a group of children who are all playing outside on the streets of the North of England. Each child represents innocence. This is important because these children seem to be living a free life. In this day and age, it is rare you will see children playing in an environment like the one in the image. The location looks dangerous due to the rubbish on the floor which is probably a danger hazard. It shows that children had a lot more freedom and perhaps even though there was even though there were dangerous environments perhaps the people in the streets were safer.
