Welcome to this service of Choral Evensong, in which we offer praise to God. This service has been sung by choirs in Anglican cathedrals and churches for centuries, and in this and other places since 1662.
The inheritance of the music, which has inspired countless generations of worshippers, is central to the history of this cathedral. The music offered is not simply a performance, but an integral part of worship. It draws us more deeply into the mystery of God’s presence with us.
This historic service has been largely unchanged since Archbishop Thomas Cranmer’s first Book of Common Prayer was published in 1549 and further revised in 1662. Cranmer drew on the medieval daily offices of matins and vespers, combining them into the single service of Evensong, which is intended as an act of praise at the close of the day.
Readings from the Bible, the recitation of ancient psalms, canticles, and the chant of the choir offer a rich resource of scriptural imagery and prayer.
It is impossible to overestimate the importance of Cranmer’s contribution to the English language, which we share with the rest of the world in its elegance, simplicity, and profound theology. His words still carry great power, and continue to inspire in the words he laid out for us.
Members of the congregation are invited to join in the parts of the service printed in bold type. The service usually proceeds without announcements.
