Tiverton Castle

Few building s evoke such an immediate feeling of histor y as Tiverton Castle, orig inally built in 1106 by Richard de Redvers on orders of Henr y I e de Redvers were the first Norman Earls of Devon and when the line died out in1293 they were succeeded as Earls by the Courtenays who rebuilt in stone and enlarg ed the Castle.

In 1495 Princess Katherine Plantag enet married William Courtenay, later Earl of Devon. Unfortunately this Royal marriag e led to the Courtenays` eventual downfall. Her son was charg ed with treason and beheaded and his son, Edward, ag ed 12 imprisoned in the Tower of London for 14 years. He was later banished abroad and died in 1556 in Padua

Subsequently the Castle had various owners down the ag es, including the Carews for 200 years

e Castle was captured in 1645 by Fairfa x due to a lucky shot hitting a drawbridg e chain,

and parts of the Castle were demolished and never rebuilt.

e land was gradually sold off and now the Castle is a peaceful private oasis of calm in four acres in the middle of town, with a beautiful g arden in the romantic ruins hig h above the River Exe. V isitors can see all ag es of architecture from medieval to modern when the Castle and g arden are open to the public two aernoons a week in the summer
