AGTO MATTERS

AGTO Showcase 2025

A Weekend in Bournemou th

There are few things in life as invigorating as a jaunt to the British seaside in February. Bracing sea air, the occasional squawk of a gull, and the thrill of discovering a hotel that promises both warmth and wine—it’s all on the agenda at the upcoming AGTO Showcase 2025. Set your sights on Bournemouth’s Marsham Court Hotel from 4th to 6th February, because this isn’t just any showcase; it’s the showcase.

Now, if you’ve never experienced an AGTO Showcase, let me paint the scene. Picture a gathering of the great and the good from the group travel world. You’ll rub shoulders with GTOs, charm AGTO Partner members, and perhaps pinch a pastry or two from the well-stocked breakfast buffet. It’s part social mixer, part treasure hunt for the next big idea in group travel, all neatly wrapped up with a sprinkling of seaside charm.

Hotel is a family-run affair, perched elegantly along Bournemouth’s coastline. It’s not just any hotel; it’s one of the most accessible in the UK, which means nobody gets left behind—not even your overly enthusiastic aunt who insists on wearing heels everywhere. It’s also a dab hand at serving up that quintessentially British coastal vibe: a mix of fresh sea breezes and excellent hospitality.

So, what’s in store?

Arrive Tuesday and ease into things with a welcome address and a drinks reception. If the thought of making small talk over canapés fills you with dread, fear not—there’s dinner and entertainment to look forward to. Wednesday kicks off with the Partner Showcase morning, which is less about awkward sales pitches and more about

actual inspiration for your next group trip. Then, it’s off to explore local attractions. Bournemouth is not shy on charm—expect the unexpected.

The grand finale? A Gala Dinner on Wednesday evening, replete with entertainment. And no, it’s not a dress-up-asyour-favourite-coach-dri ver affair (though someone should propose this for next year). Instead, it’s a night to relax, indulge, and celebrate the art of group travel.

AGTO has also lined up familiarization trips to showcase the best of Dorset. And if you’re fretting over transport, don’t. Bournemouth’s well connected by train, car, and possibly the odd unicycle, if you’re feeling adventurous. For those who prefer wheels en masse, AGTO is exploring coach travel

options. Updates will follow, so keep your eyes peeled.

Wendy Hartley-Scarff, AGTO’s illustrious CEO, sums it up perfectly: “I’m really looking forward to welcoming you to the 2025 AGTO Showcase and chatting with you in Bournemouth next February. See you there!”

Whether you’re a seasoned Showcase pro or a first-timer looking for inspiration (and an excuse to escape the February blues), this is the event to mark on your calendar. To secure your place, dash over to the AGTO website and fill in the booking form. But do it quickly—good things, as they say, don’t last forever.

The continuing, amazing adventures of Pauline & Ken, on their travels

THE SC OTTISH BORDERS

The Borders is an area we have previously just passed through on the way to the Cairngorms or Highlands but never really explored before. Two years ago when we stayed overnight at Peebles Hydro Hotel I picked up The Borders tourist book in the hotel bedroom and realised there were so many places worth visiting and the hotel kindly gave me a copy to help with planning.

Kailzie Gardens just 4 miles from Peebles Hydro, our base for six days, was a welcome leg stretch after a seven-hour journeyincluding comfort breaks. The gardens were probably in existence in the 16th century but it’s main design began in the 18th century and at its heart today is the 19th century walled garden, a blaze of vibrant colour from the flower beds to the green house. A few of the group found time to explore the

arboretum and a couple had a game on the putting green. However, a cup of tea in the café with its selection of cakes was a must. Whilst we were enjoying ourselves our driver took the cases to the hotel so that when we arrived two hours later they were already in our bedrooms leaving us plenty of time to relax before dinner. One or two even managed a swim in the hotel’s leisure centre.

Our first full day of touring was to The Trimontium Museum in Melrose. Officially the Museum opens at 10am, but the very helpful staff offered to open early and give us a half hour talk where we would be allowed to handle some of the objects unearthed at the Trimontium Roman Fort site just outside Melrose. The group were split into two with one group going to

watch the video showing aerial shots of all the Forts in Scotland and then how Trimontium was discovered. The Romans just abandoned it to go back to Europe and dug pits to bury military equipment, personal items and a large hoard of silver coins. There was also a Bronze age hoard of axe heads and

The afternoon visit was to Floors Castle, a vast 50,000-acre Estate owned by the 11th Duke of Roxburghe. We chose to have a free flow tour so the group could decide whether to eat first or tour the Castle. Wonderful treasures collected over the years in a castle that is still lived in today. It was

Age bronze warrior jewellery. If you are at all interested in history, I would highly recommend a visit. Melrose itself is a pretty place with lots of cafés and small independent shops.

suggested that as a group we went to the Castle’s Walled Garden and formal Millennium Garden in our coach, which did help those with strollers and sticks and kept the group together. The Millennium Garden has intertwining initials of the 10th Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe.

Ken and I had previously been to Rosslyn Chapel, famous after the Dan Brown ‘Da Vinci Code’ story, and knew it was a must for the group. We arrived early enough for that must-have coffee and for people to look around before the twenty minute

public talk inside the Chapel. Even seeing it again I am amazed at all the intricate, ornate stonework with it’s mysterious symbolism. The Apprentice’s Pillar, which is a more outstanding display of craftsmanship than that of the Head Mason, is one of my personal favourites. Each time you go you see something different to be marvelled at.

The Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway for a round trip was scheduled for the afternoon, with time for a lunch time snack. However, the café was only doing tea and coffee and then only if you could find someone to serve, so we all went around the corner to Tesco’s and bought a meal deal for £3.60 per person, which we bought back to eat on the coach, along with a drink made courtesy of our driver. We did enjoy the train trip afterwards.

On Wednesday we had a more relaxed day. Two of the group decided to stay at the hotel and visit the Spa and then walk into Peebles and generally take it easy. The rest of us set off for Jedburgh. Most of us made our way to The Mary Queen of Scot’s Visitor

Centre. It’s a 16th century stone tower house where Mary is believed to have lodged and almost died in 1566. The third floor has a copy of the last letter she wrote before her execution which is very moving to read. Others went to Jedburgh Abbey ruins and two intrepid walkers made it up the hill to Jedburgh Castle and Jail. As we had never actually been into Peebles town centre, although we had stayed at the hotel twice previously, most of the group decided to take up the driver’s offer to take them for a couple of hours browsing and lunch time snack, which all enjoyed.

Thursday was the trip we had all been waiting forDumfries House, run by the King’s Foundation. Despite it’s name it is well over an hour north of Dumfries, at Cumnock. When we arrived we were met by our guides

and taken to have tea/coffee and shortbread, served by a butler. This was all part of the Grand Tour we had booked as it allowed us to see not only the downstairs rooms but also some of the upstairs bedrooms. Spilt into three groups we all had excellent guides and learnt just how much our King has done to help the local community, including training and employing local people and community projects in Cumnock. The treasures within the house, saved almost at the 11th hour from being auctioned, were in some cases the only pieces of their kind and the house has the largest collection of Chippendale furniture anywhere.

The restaurant/café and visitor centre are a fiveminute walk from the house and one thing we all commented on was the reasonable price of the food and drink. Cheaper

than many other similar stately homes we have visited.

Homeward bound we had a stop for coffee at Johnson’s of Elgin Factory outlet in Hawick. High end of the cashmere clothing range, and there is also a Hawick Cashmere Visitor Centre nearby. Very nice

coffee though. Onwards then to our lunch stop, Farington Lodge just south of Preston part of the Classic Hotels group. Good service and an excellent two course meal with tea and coffee at a reasonable cost. This hotel is well positioned for an overnight stay on the way to or from Scotland as well as lunch or even just coffee. Then it was downhill all the way with traffic accidents and breakdowns on the M6 adding over an hour to the final leg of our journey.

Our next adventure is Catalonia with our favourite guide and Tour Manager, Danny. Another tour, as was Scotland, sourced through Norman Allen Group Travel.

Brittany, where Mussels grow on “trees”

As a seasoned traveler, I have always found road trips to be the most exhilarating way to explore new places. And when it comes to France, the possibilities are endless. So when the opportunity arose to embark on a six-day road trip through the northern region of Brittany , I jumped at the chance. From Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Brieuc bay , this stretch of coastline is nothing short of spectacular.

Our journey began at the world-renowned Mont-Saint-Michel, an island commune located in Normandy, France. The stunning Gothic architecture of the abbey loomed before us as we made our way across the causeway to the island. MontSaint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been attracting visitors for centuries. The island has a fascinating history, and the abbey at the top of the hill is a masterpiece of medieval engineering. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is a true architectural marvel. It was built over a period of several centuries, and the result is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The abbey's design was influenced by the Romanesque style, which is characterized by rounded arches and thick walls. The main attraction of the abbey is the church at the top, which is dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael. The church is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, and the intricate carvings and stained glass windows are truly breathtaking. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history or architecture.

After our visit to Mont-Saint-Michel, we headed west along the coast to the picturesque town of Cancale. This charming town is known for its oyster beds, which produce some of the finest oysters in France. We stopped at a little seafood restaurant called Le Surcouf, which is located on the waterfront. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff. We feasted on freshly shucked oysters and langoustines while taking in the stunning views of the bay. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere. If you're ever in Cancale, be sure to stop by Le Surcouf - you won't regret it!

Our next stop was the elegant seaside town of Dinard, with its Belle Epoque architecture and stunning beaches. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Barriere, a luxury hotel right on the beachfront. The hotel's elegant rooms and excellent restaurant made for a delightful stay. The hotel is an excellent base for exploring the town, which has a lot to offer visitors. The town is known for its historic villas, which are a testament to its past as a fashionable seaside resort. In the evening, we strolled along the Promenade du Clair de Lune, taking in the views of the bay and the beautiful villas that line the seafront. The promenade is a great spot for a leisurely walk, and the views are truly breathtaking.

The following day, we headed further west to the walled city of Saint-Malo. Known as the "City of Corsairs," Saint-Malo has a rich maritime history and is famous for its ramparts, which offer stunning views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. We stayed at the Hotel Oceania, a comfortable and stylish hotel just outside the walls of the old town. The hotel had a relaxed atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly. After exploring the city's cobbled streets and bustling markets, we stopped for lunch at La Belle Epoque, a delightful restaurant with a charming outdoor terrace. The food was outstanding, and the service was impeccable. Saint-Malo has a lot to offer visitors. The city has a long and fascinating history, and there are many historic sites to explore. The city's ramparts are a must-see attraction, offering panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The ramparts were built in the 17th century to protect the city from attack, and they are now a popular tourist attraction. The city also has a lively market, where you can find

all sorts of local produce, including seafood, cheeses, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The city is also famous for its beaches, which are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

The next leg of our journey took us to the little fishing village of Saint-Cast-leGuildo. This hidden gem on the Cotes d'Armor is a real find, with its quaint harbor and beautiful beaches. We stayed at the Hotel de l'Espérance, a cozy and welcoming hotel just steps from the beach. The hotel had a charming atmosphere, and the staff were very helpful. In the evening, we headed to Le

Vieux Castel, a charming restaurant specializing in seafood. The bouillabaisse was particularly noteworthy, as was the stunning sunset over the harbor.

Saint-Cast-le-Guildo is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. The village is small and peaceful, with a few shops and restaurants. The beach is a great spot for sunbathing and swimming, and there are also plenty of opportunities for water sports. The harbor is a great place to watch the boats come and go, and

you can also take a boat trip along the coast. On the fifth day of our trip, we headed inland to the medieval city of Dinan. This fortified city on the River Rance is a treasure trove of historic architecture and winding streets. We stayed at the Hotel Arvor, a lovely hotel right in the heart of the old town. The hotel had a traditional Breton charm, and our room was very comfortable. In the evening, we dined at La Marmite, a delightful restaurant serving traditional Breton cuisine.

The crepes were a particular highlight, and the restaurant had a cozy atmosphere.

Dinan is a beautiful city with a rich history. The city's medieval architecture is particularly impressive, and there are many historic sites to explore. The city is also known for its art galleries and museums, which offer a glimpse into the city's past. The River Rance runs through the city, and there are many opportunities for boat trips and water sports. The city also has a lively market, where you can find all sorts

of local produce, including cheeses, fruits, and vegetables.

Our final destination was the stunning Saint-Brieuc bay, with its dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches. We stayed at the Hotel Edgar, a chic and stylish hotel right on the seafront. The views from our room were simply breathtaking, and the hotel had a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. For our final meal of the trip, we headed to La P'tite Folie, a charming restaurant serving excellent seafood

and local specialties. Saint-Brieuc bay is a great place to explore the outdoors. The cliffs and beaches offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, and water sports. The bay is also home to many seabirds and other wildlife, making it a great place for bird watching and nature lovers. The town of SaintBrieuc itself is also worth exploring, with its historic buildings and lively market. our road trip through Brittany was an unforgettable experience. We saw some of the most

beautiful sights in France, and we sampled some of the best food and wine the country has to offer. The people were friendly and welcoming, and we felt like we had discovered a part of France that is often overlooked by tourists. If you're planning a trip to France, we highly recommend exploring Brittany - you won't be disappointed!

Brittany is also famous for its delicious cuisine. The region is known for its seafood, crepes, and cider, and there are plenty

of opportunities to sample these local specialties on a road trip through Brittany. One of the most popular dishes in Brittany is the galette, a type of savory crepe made with buckwheat flour. Galettes are often filled with cheese, ham, and eggs, and are usually served with a glass of cider. Another popular dish is the kouignamann, a buttery pastry that is similar to a croissant. The kouign-amann is a specialty of the town of Douarnenez, and is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.

Brittany is also famous for its seafood, and there are many excellent seafood restaurants to be found throughout the region. In addition to oysters, langoustines, and bouillabaisse, other popular seafood dishes include mussels, scallops, and lobster. Some of the best seafood restaurants in Brittany include La Belle

Epoque in Saint-Malo, Le Surcouf in Cancale, and Le Vieux Castel in Saint-Castle-Guildo.

Another specialty of Brittany is cider, which is made from locally grown apples. The region is home to many small-scale cider producers, and there are plenty of opportunities to sample the local cider on a road trip through Brittany. Some of the best places to try cider include the town of Fouesnant, which is known for its artisanal cider producers, and the town of Guingamp, which hosts an annual cider

festival in September. Brittany is also home to many excellent vineyards, and the region is known for its crisp and refreshing white wines. Some of the best vineyards in Brittany include the Domaine de la Roche Bleue in Anjou, which produces excellent chenin blanc, and the Domaine de l'Ecu in Muscadet, which is known for its biodynamic wines. In addition to its food and wine, Brittany is also known for its music and dance. The region has a rich cultural heritage, and there are many traditional music

and dance festivals held throughout the year. One of the most popular festivals is the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, which takes place in August and celebrates the Celtic culture of Brittany and other regions of Europe.

Overall, a road trip through Brittany is an excellent way to explore one of the most beautiful and fascinating regions of France. From the stunning Gothic architecture of Mont-SaintMichel to the charming fishing villages of Saint-

Cast-le-Guildo, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Brittany. Whether you're a foodie, a history buff, or a nature lover, you're sure to fall in love with this beautiful region.
