WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.

Dear Readers The Christmas and New Year fes vi es are now behind us for another year but I am amazed at how soon the celebra ons start and each year they seem to get earlier and earlier. The day a er Fireworks night, you start to see the decora ons going up in houses and gardens, the adverts begin on the TV and the supermarkets stock up with a wealth of gi s and foodstuffs. The communi es were also very busy this year with many Christmas fayres, markets, school events, pantomimes, church services and more. A new and exci ng development for Redbourn this year was the Live Advent Calendar which counted down from 1st December to 24th, star ng and finishing at St Mary’s. Each day at 6.15pm, people gathered in front of a numbered door and opened it to a surprise which was anything from a carol service, to live music to ac ng and other art forms. Each show lasted just 15 minutes and it was a great way of ge ng everyone into the Christmas spirit of giving, receiving and having fun. We include a collec on of photos from some of the events inside this magazine. As I write this editorial, I am miles away from Her ordshire, enjoying the summer sun in Australia. This is the second me we have spent Christmas and New Year down under with family and it is interes ng to experience a different country’s celebra ons. There is nothing like the ‘hype’ down here, with everything being much lower key. We miss the buzz of Christmas in the UK but it is nice however to enjoy a more relaxed me off work and catch up with loved ones. It is also nice to wear shorts and tshirts on Christmas Day but Father Christmas doesn’t look appropriately dressed for 30 degrees of sunshine. Enjoy the winter.

Studham Remembrance Service Sunday 13th November

lorious weather allowed the parade and service to be held under bright sunny skies without a cloud in sight.

There was a wonderful turnout from the locals as well as the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, who were all impeccably dressed in uniform. What a ďŹ ng way to ďŹ nish the service with an inves ture of a new Assistant Beaver Scout Leader, Adrian Berry. He took the oath with 45 young members present which is just over half of their full membership.

How long have you been in business? Is it a family run business? We have been in business for over 36 years. It’s a family run business which was based in Markyate for over 28 years. We have now been in Studham Malcolm Gayle for nearly 8 years. I started cabinet making straight from school and got an appren ceship with Bernerd Hughes Bespoke furniture makers in Dunstable; specialising in welsh dressers, tables, corner cabinets all in oak.

Did you train as a carpenter? Through the years I have made and restored a varied range of furniture from solid beech for the YMCA in Bedford ki ng out each appartment, consis ng of dining table and chair, lounge chair, chest of drawers and robe.

What is the most sa sfying work you have done? Most sa sfying job was working for No. 10 Downing St for over 14 years restoring various important items of furniture including their an que state room table which is 15 leaves long, has 8 legs and a windup mechanism. I repaired, stripped and repolished it. I also restored oﬃces and furniture in Whitehall. Saying that, it is sa sfying to make any item of furniture and see the end result in either a modern or period design.

What was your latest project and do you offer any other services within your business? I have just finished 30 pieces of furniture for a hotel in Bedford consis ng of 10 dressing tables and 20 bedside cabinets all in a modern design. Studham School Christmas Fayre 9th December Words and photos by Janet Brown

o Stephenson and Mariane Sheeham took on the roles of organising the fayre all within 2 weeks! Jo said, ‘It was all a bit of a last minute idea but we have a good team to support us. There is a great community here in Studham and it has all has come together in such a short space of me.’ With Santa being a huge favourite there were queues to visit him and his elves, but whilst you were wai ng you could stop by and make some special packets of food for the reindeers. Other stalls included Decorate the Cupcake, Lucky Dip and Knock Over the Snowman. The total amount raised was £482.80 which will help fund future events and treats for the children.

Pantomine Comes to Caddington…

hristmas came early in Caddington as Caddington Amateur Drama c Society (CADS) performed their pantomime Rumpels ltskin's Revenge at the end of November. Wri en by member Lou Treleaven and directed by Sarah Fitzsimmons, with music arranged by Fred Thomas, the panto follows the story of Rumpels ltskin if he had succeeded in taking the queen's first born child. Cue swordfights, ghastly villains, noble heroes, a dame who can't cook, a pig who thinks it's a prince, a prince who thinks he's Rumpels ltskin Junior and slaps ck and panto gags galore. Cast and crew had a fabulous me and so did the audience by all accounts. Next produc on will be the Vicar of Dibley in May. CADS meets on a Tuesday evening at 8pm in Heathfield Community Centre.

Redbourn Living Advent Calendar 1st – 24th December 2016 Door number 1 – St Mary’s Church It was Pam Hansford’s idea to introduce the Living Advent calendar to Redbourn. “I got the idea from Sweden,” said Pam and thought it would work very well here. he Redbourn in Bloom volunteers are responsible for Redbourn looking so colourful with beau ful ﬂower beds, borders and hanging baskets, changing with the seasons but always a delight to behold. Some might think that the council is responsible for the ﬂowers but it is not. A busy Village Hall

“We need to raise £4,000 per year to fund the flowers that are planted in the spring, summer and autumn in Redbourn. We get a grant from the Parish Council but that s ll leaves us with serious fund raising to do,” said Chairman Pat Schofield. The efforts of the team are recognised and Redbourn in Bloom has been awarded SilverGuilt status in the annual Anglia in Bloom compe on from 2008 to 2011, Gold in 2012 and 2013, SilverGuilt in 2015 and Gold again this year.

The Cra Fair is one of the main fund raising events, along with the Redbourn Hor cultural Show in September. I thought the art and cra s were par cularly good this year and I have to admit to having spent quite a lot of money and coming home with two bags full of goods. 5th Redbourn Christmas Market What a great way to start the Christmas fes vi es Words and photos by Sue Mitchell 27th November, Redbourn High Street

shtons were delighted to be the main sponsor of Redbourn Xmas market for the fourth year running. It is amazing how the market has grown over the years and it now must be one of the most well a ended in the area. It was great to see many Bustling High Street full of colour clients, past and present, at this year’s event which is a fantas c way to mark the start of the fes ve period. People turned out in droves to enjoy some Christmas shopping and entertainment. The weather although cold, was s ll and bright unlike last year when high winds defeated lots of the traders and visitors alike. Many of the High Street shops were oﬀering drinks and minced pies or canapes to customers or passers by. What a lovely way to get into the Christmas spirit with the good will gesture of a free drink and cake! The smells of Christmas spices and barbecued food was everywhere. Yum. The Morris Dancers were well worth ﬁ een minutes of your me. Wicket Brood from Bricketwood with their dis nc ve purple and green ta ered ou its are the Border style of Morris Dancers, I was told by dancer, Hartley Dean. The hankie wavers I was reliably informed, are from the Cotswolds ilk of Morris Dancers. “Borders have an aggressive style,” said Bagman Stella Lewis. “In years gone by, Morris Men were illegal buskers. In the winter, when there was no work on the farms, local men would turn their jackets inside out and To adver se call 01582 965760

paint their faces so they would not be recognised. They would go busking in neighbouring villages in the hope that they would not get found out. The prac ce started to earn them more money. Their masters would be down on them for extra taxes if they were found out so they had to go out in disguise!” The Wicket Brood do a lot of clashing of s cks and hollering which would have been “begging with menace in the old days,” said Hartley. “This in mida on led to them receiving generous dona ons. If they didn’t get what they wanted, they would plough up peoples’ gardens,” he added. The Harpenden Concert band got us in the Christmas spirit by playing all the favourites, including Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells, to the delight of the children watching on. Redbourn Care Group were ﬂying the ﬂag (and balloons). The had some useful merchandise as giveaways and I came away with an icescraper for the car which was put to immediate use the following week. The group are always looking for volunteers to drive the bus, take residents to appointments and other tasks that the elderly and sick, can no longer do for themselves. Please men on

Flamstead PreSchool Christmas Celebra ons 3rd December

he new commi ee put their stamp on the Christmas Fair by bringing in some new a rac ons.

This year there was a cosy gro o where Santa asked the children in turn, what they would like for Christmas, a er which they were given a s cker book and ﬂash cards. The highlight was Teddy the pony reindeer. This gorgeous 36” Shetland pony thrilled the children as he was led by Santa into the Village Hall. Teddy arrived in a van from the party pony company. He had the calm and collec on of a professional and he allowed the children to cuddle him and feed him treats when out in the car park. Mulled wine and minced pies were on sale, along with many stalls selling Christmas goodies. For those in need of more substan al food there was a barbecue outside. Inside the hall, the children had fun playing the table games which had been set up to entertain them.

Witnessed Criminal Behaviour in the Villages? ‘Use Crime Stoppers to report it anonymously’ is the message from The Police. Call them on 0800 55 111 Her ordshire Constabulary held a Community Engagement event outside the Y2 Parish Hall on 19th November. The purpose of the event which was organised by Brian Evans PC, was to encourage people to engage more with the Police in preven ng and repor ng crime. Brian said, “People in the community have a lot of knowledge, they see and hear what is going on. We want to make people conﬁdent to report to the police. They have a lot of intelligence which is useful to build a case against

It is a charity, networked around the country, run by volunteers and they send reported informa on to us straight away. The ‘learn 2 live’ car was there for people to have a go. It has been custom built, with controls in the boot to allow drivers and passengers to experience the buildup incidence of the car crashing. It is targeted at young people to make them understand the dangers of driving fast, being distracted by using their mobile phones when driving, loud blaring music and a car full of noisy passengers.

Friends of Markyate School (FOMS) Christmas Fayre

upported by a huge team of parent helpers, teachers, stall holders, and volunteers, there was an extensive range of gi s on display and novelty stands at the event. One stall was a tombola run by Reese Housden and his mum Sam. Reese is a former pupil at the school and now he a ends Sir John Lawes in Harpenden. In 2018, along with around 30 other pupils, he is going on a ‘Vietnam World Challenge’. In order to go, they have to raise at least 80% of the money which is around £3,750 and to start the fund raising, they had a tombola. The trip will include social projects, trekking, des na on and i nerary planning, and acclima sa on. Look out for Reese at future events in 2017 as he will be busy fund raising for this trip of a life me. ver three hundred people, old, middleaged and young proceeded up Markyate High Street to pay their respects to the fallen heroes of the two world wars as well as more recent conﬂicts. The names of Markyate’s own residents who gave their lives were named and respected and many groups and socie es went forward in turn, to lay their poppies at the war memorial. I noted how many of the names read out were names of people I know in the village. Great grandparents and grandparents died in the wars but their legacy goes on in Markyate through their

children and their children’s children. The Parish Council put these huge poppies at various points up the High Street. What a ﬁ ng tribute to those who lost their lives for our sakes.

What does your work involve at St Ma hews? “I work as an ac vity coordinator, providing person centred ac vi es, s mula ng the demen a person; integra ng the community in our home and teaching staﬀ to engage with residents.”

Where do you go from here? “I have already started my own charity called ‘Forget Me Not Musicians’ which is just awai ng charity status. I am also working with professor Keith MacAdam on his charity ‘Mind for Music’. I believe that music is a huge key in giving relief to demen a residents, and it also gives them s mula on and fun.”

Have you got any plans to develop your work for 2017? Yes, I plan to involve and integrate the community more with our new build that opens in the spring 2017. We will have the community closer with our new building as it will have a spa, a gym, chapel, shop, cafe and 16 stateoftheart residents’ rooms with wet rooms.

uzan Moule from Markyate has fulﬁlled her ambi on of becoming an Author a er having her children’s book ‘Woody’s Park’ published for all to enjoy and she couldn’t be happier. “I am absolutely ecsta c,” she said. “I sent it to a few Publishing Houses and didn’t really expect even a reply as I know how hard it is to get work published in an over saturated market; so when Olympia Publishers came back to me with such a lovely email saying they deemed it very worthy of publica on and they wanted to go ahead and publish it for me, it made me cry! I was and s ll am absolutely delighted to know others love and believe in my work, it’s such a great feeling.” Woody’s Park is completely my own idea and crea on; I even sourced my own illustrator as I didn’t think the original one from the publishers suited my book. It has been a real labour of love but so worth it!

Suzan comes from a talented family and up un l now has probably been best known as being mum to Jack Moule, a hugely successful professional stuntman and champion jet skier who has had his fair share of a en on and media coverage but it seems he may well have to move aside for his mum now! Her son Jack said, "I’m so happy for mum. Dad and I encouraged her to try and get Woody’s Park published as we knew it was such a good read and children would love it. She has always been there for me and helped, supported and encouraged my career and it’s so lovely to see her achieve her dream too. She deserves it. It’s a great book!” Suzan can o en be seen out walking with her beloved Black Labrador Woody enjoying the countryside together, albeit at a much slower pace now as Woody grows older. “We could never re him out when he was younger, but now it’s more about the quality of his walk rather the quan ty bless him. He loves to sit and watch the li le animals scurrying by or the children playing and we o en ﬁnd a li le bench in the corner of the park or woodlands where he can sit and do just that. Woody has such character and always makes me laugh. I love being with him; he is a very important family member who is so, so loved and special. It seemed more than ﬁ ng to write my book and name it a er him.” Woody’s Park by Suzan S Moule is available from Olympia Publishers or all good bookshops and online stores.

Woody’s Park is a sweet natured, endearing children’s book, oﬀering a li le knowledge of the wildlife and nature in our beau ful countryside. There is also a common misconcep on that to diagnose a fault on a car, all you need to do is plug the car into a computer which will tell you exactly what is wrong. It doesn’t! It guides you to an area of the vehicle where the reading is picked up by the vehicle’s computer to say that things aren’t quite as they should be. It is not a magic plug in tool that is the answer to everyone’s prayer. It needs interpre ng and analysing by a competent Diagnos c or Master Technician using a high quality machine.

It is a li le confusing and you need to look at what the cer fica on mark means to you as the consumer, not what it means to the garage!

ould you take your car to someone who wasn’t competent to work on it? The Ins tute of the Motor Industry (IMI) surveyed 2000 motorists revealing that 98% of people wouldn’t let anyone who didn’t have an acceptable level of skill work on their car. However, only 9% admi ed to checking if this was the case.

41% of people wouldn’t let an unlicensed technician work on their car with 70% assuming that a licence existed. The reality is that the motor trade isn’t licensed. Anyone can set up as a mechanic and work on your car. So, are reasons such as ‘they know my car’ or ‘I’ve known them for many years good reasons to stay where you are or should you check they are currently competent?

When there was an increase in injuries in the electrical and gas industries, the Government regulated them. The cost of ge ng it wrong can be catastrophic and this is why people are advised to employ only a licensed engineer because their level of competence has been checked and passed. Of course, there will always be cheaper op ons, but with safety involved, would you risk it? As you can imagine, there are many components in a car which can put the driver at risk; from brakes and electrical faults to highly ﬂammable fuel and explosives. When a vehicle has been serviced by a garage, they are conﬁrming that the vehicle is safe to drive and you put your trust in them that this is the case. Take yourselves back a few years and realise how the technology and complexity in cars has changed. Among others, consider: airbags, tyre pressure sensors, intelligent protec on system, adap ve front ligh ng system, computer console, ABS, Electronic Stability Program Trac on control, USB/ipod connec vity, advanced naviga on system, air condi oning, lane departure warning, collision warning, power steering, cruise control,

Even the basic mechanics of a car have changed considerably, so it is really important that the Technicians are regularly checked for their competence in all these areas. If you don’t have a suﬃciently capable technician working on your car, they can miss the small faults that over me become larger and more expensive to repair. The IMI is a professional body whose aim is to raise and promote high standards across the industry. They introduced the IMI Accredita on for Technicians which can only be maintained by regular assessment. The IMI invest over £100k on training every year and... those garages who exercise due diligence are just as enthusias c. Steve Nash, Chief Execu ve of the IMI, says, “We are concerned. There are a great number of people working on cars and as far as the general public are concerned, many of them believe that there is a higher degree of qualiﬁca on than, in
