WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.

Our first magazine in the new format has been well received so the plan is to con nue with the same strategy. Mimagazine is a great way to adver se local businesses to local people. Now with a far reaching audience of 10,000 households and a poten al 40,000 readership, magazine adver sing s ll outstrips online adver sing for effec veness, brand awareness and response. The key advantage to magazine adver sing is that magazines hang around in people’s homes – on their coffee and kitchen tables and they are an unobtrusive and effec ve prod for ge ng your business message across to your poten al customer base. Electronic adver sing flashes past; mag adver sing stays the distance.

Free Lego Event packsout the Parish Centre in Redbourn Report and photos by Sue Mitchell

Large group of families and children came along to build lego houses

A

novel idea conceived by Becky Firth, Community Officer for Redbourn, to invite families to build Lego houses whilst exploring ideas about proposed developments for Redbourn, can be described as a definite winner. Children, parents and other residents sat around tables at the Parish Centre on 5th April, to build different types of Le , Becky Firth Community Offcer. houses Right, Vivienne Windle, Project Manager for Neighbourhood Plan from special ready made kits or, if they so chose, to build their own style of design. The objec ve behind the ac vity was to raise residents’ awareness of the Redbourn Neighbourhood Plan, giving them a chance to study where the To adver se call 01582 965760

possible development sites have been marked out and more importantly, providing them with the opportunity to give their feedback. All a endees were asked to complete a ques onnaire following their visit. “The average age of the a endees at the usual type of consulta on event is 55 so we wanted to reach a bigger demographic which also included younger people. The plan is for the future of Redbourn so families and young people need to be encouraged to engage in the plans too,” said Becky. “We did a big Facebook campaign and we have started a FB group so we can run online polls and ques onnaires. We want to make it as convenient as possible for residents of all ages to be involved and give their input,” she added. “There are currently seven development sites outlined in Redbourn. Some sites have been assessed as more suitable than others and they do not all have to be developed or built on in their en rety. This is a chance for residents to have an input and for their ideas to be considered alongside advice from our planning consultant.” Vivienne Windle, Project Manager, collates people's

9 The NP can be challenged by the developers and it will be assessed by an Independent Examiner. The approved NP will then be presented to the villagers at a referendum. For it to be adopted 50% of the votes have to be in favour. It is very important that as many villagers get to know about the NP, give their input and then vote at the referendum. If they don’t vote, they have no say in the Plan. The referendum is expected to take place in late 2017.

The NP aims to: • Protect the village heritage and green spaces • Provide more affordable housing for families, first me buyers and proper es for ‘downsizers’ • Encourage more local business and enterprise • Address growing educa on needs • Provide new community facili es and recrea on space • Create more footpaths and cycle paths

The Lego was supplied by ‘Awesome Engineers’ who teach science, technology, engineering and maths in local schools. “Lego allows children to learn in a fun and innova ve way,” said Melvyn, a representa ve of the company. The whole process should take between three to four months to complete. 2016 is the ‘Year of the Volunteer’ and this is one of many ini a ves from Herts County Council. “We currently have 26 members but we need up to 35,” said David Trowbridge, Volunteer Organiser. “We are open from 26pm Mon, Tues, Wed and

To help volunteers and users get to grips with the change, there is a service called Library Link which is an on line video service with an expert at Welwyn Garden City, Library Services. All library queries can be handled via this service and Herts CC staff are on hand to give volunteers and users confidence to use Library Link.

hipsnade Village Hall has a busy schedule of ac vi es planned for 2016 including music concerts, cra fairs and a party for the Queen’s 90th birthday. “The ac vi es at our Village Hall give locals a place to come and socialise with each other, be entertained and do some shopping. We worry that some people, par cularly the elderly, can be socially isolated so this is a place for them to come out and meet others,” said Carolyn Booth, commi ee member. “There are 420 people living in Whipsnade, a third of which live on The Whipsnade Park and earlier today a group from the Park visited.” I enjoyed talking to Carolyn who gave me some interes ng snippets of informa on. Did you know that the Blythe family who were local farmers built the Village Hall for the benefit of the villagers?

Windy Sayles located next to the Hall is owned by the Girl Guides’ Associa on; it is a place where Girl Guides and Brownies from all over Bedfordshire come for camps. The final should have taken place on Easter Sunday but torren al rain the night before led to a water logged pitch and a late cancella on. The boys will have to wait for the rematch date of May

17 The semifinal win was an unexpected victory as their opponents, Hougton Regis, were ranked second in the division above the Swan. The match started well for our boys with good passing but a loss of the ball in midfield led to a goal for the opposi on, followed by a second just before half me. So going into the secondhalf, they were 2 nil down. Team talk at half me galvanised the fight back and soon a er the whistle, the Swan won a penalty taken by Paul Fox. The 21 score line didn’t last long and Houghton Regis responded to make it 31. A great pass led to the Swan’s second goal scored by Leon Cox. At 32 down, the team were inspired and at 15 minutes from full me, a great goal came from Pete Young to level the score at 33. Houghton Regis kept on coming but the Swan managed to hold them back. This was a Cup Match so the 33 score at full me led to a penalty shootout. The excitement was palpable: 11; 22 but then the Swan’s goalkeeper Rory Bu erfield made a brilliant save to put HR 32 down. Dogged determina on swept through the team and not another penalty kick from the Swans missed the back of the net.

Shaking Hands

The penalty goal scorers for the Swan were Paul Fox, Ryan Duff, Pete Young, Tom Bu erfield and Leon Cox. The joy of the team was great to see. ‘Come on you Swans!’ Let’s see you raise the cup on May 8th.

Well done to a Kensworth canine at Cru s 2016 1013th March NEC Birmingham

Janet Brown spoke to Sue Willis about her success What is the name of your dog and does he have a ‘pet’ name? His kennel club name is Talanor’s Super Treat and his pet name is Marmite. Can you tell us about the breed Manchester Terrier? The Manchester Terrier is a breed of dog of the smoothhaired terrier type. They live between 14 – 16 years, they are devoted, alert, keen, and very ac ve. I was keen to support this very old Bri sh breed and with a lot of help and support from his breeder, Gill and Clive Knight, we found ourselves at Cru s. How well did you do at Cru s? This was my second year we were placed 3rd. In 2015 we won the ‘post graduate’ sec on which gave us the automa c qualifica on for this year. Marmite is from a very successful kennel and his Dad won ‘Best of Breed’ last year. Before Marmite I had never considered showing. What is the atmosphere like? It’s a long day but everyone is cheerful and posi ve. There is a lot of buzz around all the rings and a lot of grooming goes on (fortunately Manchester’s don't need too much). We were in the ring a er the Wes es. While wai ng we had a lot of visitors from the general public enquiring about our breed and wan ng to make a fuss of them. How many were in the class? There were over 60 Manchesters on the day with representa ves from several countries. This is a good turnout

Talanors Super Treat

for a vulnerable breed where there are only about 200 puppies registered each year with the Kennel Club. The limit for his class is six. What do you have to achieve at the show? To compete at Cru s’ you have to a ain a top three placing at a Championship Show. What is his favourite food/treat? Marmite eats nearly anything; his favourite treat is pig’s ears. Do you do fun classes with Marmite? Last summer we started Agility at ‘Li le Revel End’ in Redbourn, something he absolutely loves. He is very fast so when we master the accuracy I am sure he will be unbeatable.

Appletrees Nursery Supports St. Leonard’s Church a er Lead is Stolen from Roof Report and photos by Janet Brown

O

n a rainy night in late March, lead was stripped from the roof of St. Leonard's church. The subsequent damage caused by exposure to the elements needs to be speedily repaired to prevent any further deteriora on. The scrap value of the lead taken was approximately £400600, but the total repair bill is likely to be in the region of £10,000! Appletrees nursery came up with a great idea of how to help. I went along to meet the team and some of the

children to find out about their plan. The children took part in a sponsored ‘song and dance’ rou ne which they performed each day from Tuesday 29th March – Friday 1st April. Sam Devo , the owner manager said, “The children have worked very hard to learn the words to the songs and master the dance rou nes. We have children performing from 18 months up to 5 years of age so it takes me and prac se for us to coordinate the words and ac ons. The children have taken home sponsorship forms and will collect dona ons for this good cause. There will be a prize for the highest dona on.”

Craving for the chance to engage in s mula ng debate? Want to meet up with likeminded people?

W

hether you are interested in the arts, culture, poli cs, history, literature – whatever you like to study, think about and discuss, the ‘Open End’ group might be what you have been wai ng for. "Open End" group meets bimonthly in people’s private houses to talk about a range of subjects. Everyone is welcome to come to a session and see what goes on. It is nonexclusive and covers the catchment area of this magazine. I caught up with Werner Ustorf, founder member to find out more about the group. What sort of people are members of your discussion group ‘Open End’? Women form the majority, some of them holding down jobs, some are re red. Most of us have cultural and professional exper se, and some of us come with a lot of interna onal experience too. Are you looking to a ract more members? If so, what type of people would have empathy with or complement the other members? We do not expect our group to be demographically representa ve, but it is clear that we would welcome more male persons; we currently also lack the intermediate genera on (parents with children of school age). Again, this is not about sta s cs. It is about including a wider range of experience and achieving a broader picture in our discussions. Which subjects have you discussed so far? Among the subjects we covered so far are: Donna Tar ’s ‘The Goldfinch’; the film ‘Cloud Atlas’; various pieces of poetry; the ancient wall pain ngs of Thera/Santorini; Colm Toibin’s ‘Brooklyn’; Alexandra Fuller’s ‘An African Childhood’; and the film ‘45 Years’. The next session will focus on music and self. How do you decide which subject will be discussed in the next session? We tend to have a general consensus, though ul mately the decision is in the hands of the person hos ng the event. In principle, no subject is off limits. Do members have to sign a contract or observe any rules? There is no wri en contract or bureaucracy of any sort. But we do have rules. Since we are mee ng in our private homes, privacy needs to be respected. This would include respec ng the host and their home and the rule that what is being said in a private discussion stays private. Further, members should normally be willing to take turns in hos ng mee ngs (offering wine and nibbles etc.).

To adver se call 01582 965760

What do members get out of the mee ngs? What do they enjoy? There is a boundless spirit of curiosity and the desire to learn new things. Doing this together in a safe group and in a private atmosphere, and over food and wine or so, has produced a wonderful sense of togetherness and plenty of enjoyment. The Open End has become a place where we can express ourselves without fear and where one can laugh, also about oneself. Have you excluded anyone? No. Is there a social programme in place for members? We have not yet thought about this ques on (though ideas about ou ngs, excursions and so on have been created). What has emerged so far is a sense of mutual responsibility and networking which tends to spill over the boundaries of the Open End and into our individual lives. How would someone go about becoming a member? They would address themselves to the administrator who would supply them with some wri en informa on and facilitate the process. Presen ng this year’s Captains at Redbourn Golf Club

From le to right, Ladies’ Captain Ang O'Connor, Junior Boys’ Captain Owen Benson, Junior Girls’ Captain Micaela du Plessis and Club Captain Andy Crawford

I

was invited to meet the new captains by proud mum Nichola Benson, whose son Owen is the junior captain for the boys. Everyone was in good spirits two days a er Sheffield born Danny Wille became Masters Champion in the USA. Such a huge achievement for a young Brit in the USA is certainly a massive boost to golf in this country. Redbourn Golf Club is part of the Burhill Golf and Leisure Group and they manage the day to day running of the club with 31 yearold Ian McDowell at the helm as manager. The advantage to members is that they can go and play at the other clubs owned by the group at no extra charge.

captain’s tenure is up, the vicecaptain moves into the captain’s shoes. The senior captains’ inaugura ons take place at the AGM and run from February to February; the junior captains hold office from November to November. There is a handover ceremony at the AGM and the outgoing captain “hands over the blazer” to the incoming captain. The new captains give their inaugura on speeches and a series of ac vi es then follow. The first task for the new senior captains is the ‘drive ins’ when they go out and play with the members. The Ladies Captain’s ‘driveIn’ is on the Wednesday following the AGM, and the overall Captain’s ‘driveIn’ is on the Sunday. The captains are always the first to

The four captains have been appointed by the members of which there are around 800 at Redbourn, 100 of whom are ladies and 85 are juniors. The top role is Club Captain who is the overall captain. This posi on can be occupied by a woman or a man and this year it is Andy Crawford who wears the blazer. The ladies’ captain is Ang O’Connor, and the two junior captains are Micaela du Plessis and Owen Benson. Golf is steeped in tradi on and there are a series of rituals that take place each year. Before becoming captains, members serve a year as vice captains, suppor ng the incumbent captain and when the

enjoys a barbeque.

Much is made of the ‘driveins’ and a theme is chosen to reflect the interests of the captains. The vice captains decide what is suitable and it is then a big surprise for the captains.

“What makes a good captain? “I asked of the four of them, si ng around the table.

“My theme was Formula One,” said Andy, “as I am mad about racing.” “Cows, whiskey and Manchester United was my theme,” said Ang. “It [the ‘drivein’] makes a real welcome to the start of the year,” she added.

Golfing prowess is not important. Ang who has a handicap of 22 said, “The quali es of a good captain are that they are approachable, have good organisa onal skills and are commi ed to the job. It’s a lot of work and we do our best to raise as much for the charity as possible. For me, I did the job as it is a way of ‘giving back’ to the club.” Andy who has a handicap of 10 said, “The Herts Air Ambulance needs £6 million pounds a year to keep the service going. There is no lo ery or government funding so fund raising is essen al. One in four people survive a heart a ack if they are airli ed to hospital as opposed to one in ten survivors who are taken to hospital by the road ambulance service.” The captain with the best handicap is Owen who is on three. “I want to be a pro when I leave Oaklands college,” said Owen. For Owen to play at his level, he needs a good set of clubs and one driver alone can cost £300! So let’s keep an eye out for him. He could be the next Danny Willet.

The captains choose a charity for the year and many events are organised to raise money for the nominated charity. This requires a big effort as typically £10,000 is raised for the nominated charity. “This is a lot of money to come from the members, bearing in mind how much they have to pay out for fees, golf clubs and kit. It is very expensive,” said Ang. This year The Herts Air Ambulance are going to benefit from the captain’s fund raising schemes. The Captain’s Day and the Ladies Captain’s Day are big fund raisers for the charity which are held on separate days and the prizes are chosen and donated by the captains. Another big charity earner is the Dinner Dance which is typically a ended by 120 people and raffles and auc ons add to the charity’s trawl of dona ons. The Eric Russell compe on is a big tournament which is run on the Ryder Cup format of teams. It’s a great weekend and the tournament is o en won by a junior team and at the end of the day, everyone

Both Owen and Micaela, who is also at Oaklands, spend a lot of their me at the club prac sing and playing. They have amazing energy levels and are really enthusias c about the game. Micaela’s handicap is eight. She is not sure what she wants to do for a career but right now she is enjoying golf and loves being a junior captain. One of the big challenges is the 54 Hole Challenge which is taking place at around the me this magazine will be distributed – 27th April. Golfers have to complete three 18 hole courses in one day and Micaela and Owen will be compe ng in this challenge. “They complete 18 holes and then they prac se their pu ng on the green. A er 18 holes we adults are exhausted,” said Ang. “The adults complete 18 holes and then retreat to the bar for a much needed drink,” added Andy.

New Micro Pub in Markyate M

ar n Dale, with the support of his partner Nikki, has ventured into a new career as a publican; opening a new concept micro pub on the High Street in Markyate. Located in the old Town & Country premises, the new pub called ‘The Local’ is right in the hub of the village. “The idea came to me when Nikki and two friends went for a weekend break to Whitstable in Kent,” said Mar n. “We popped into the Black Dog to sample the real ales and were intrigued by this new style micropub. We ended up having a lockin with the landlord, not to get drunk Mar n and Nikki but because we were pumping him with ques ons. I even bought one of the Black Dog tshirts that his regulars wear. My friend Dan and I were so impressed with the pub that I was inspired to start one of my own.” Not being a publican by trade, it is a very much a venture into the unknown for Mar n. He spent 20 years in corporate life in Adver sing and Media, followed by 15 years in Training and Consultancy.

to get the engineers in to change the machine that day. The beer has to be around 10 degrees cen grade, so having a good cooler is essen al. On the night when we thought everything was going well, we discovered that the plumbers had forgo en to remove a plug from one of the pipes in the ladies’ toilets, as a consequence they were flooded. Mark handled this problem and instructed everyone not to tell me. We were worried that we would not be able to open the next day but fortunately we did get it sorted in me.” At the me of wri ng, The Local has been open for 12 days so it is s ll too early to gauge local reac on. “How is it going so far?” I asked Mar n.

“The Training and Consultancy business was not doing that well so I was looking for something new. We decided to go to Whitstable as Nikki had just le Ashton’s School in Dunstable as a teaching assistant and we wanted to celebrate, so it was by chance that we stumbled on the Black Dog. It was certainly a lifechanging experience,” Mar n said smiling. Nikki is with me all the way on this [project] and I couldn’t do it without her. Some mes we wake up in the night and start discussing ideas over a cup of tea!” “Searching for a suitable property, I popped into Town and Country and Mark Bristow [MD] suggested that I look at their old offices, down the High Street. I knew immediately he was right. It was centrally located, I loved the tradi onal Markyate heritage style frontage and it was small enough to be micro but big enough to create a bar and a snug room. This was in October last year so everything has happened in the six months since then.” There have been some stressful moments along the way Mar n admi ed. “We had a lot of administra on and legali es to sort out with Dacorum Borough Council: Change of Use, Health and Safety, Food and Drink, Building Regula ons, Planning Applica on and I had to get a personal license to sell alcohol. On launch day, Good Friday, the weather suddenly warmed up and the temperature of the beer cooler rose too high. This was a big worry and we had

The Opening Night “The opening night was rammed and people were standing outside on the pavement which was brilliant. Now it has se led down, we are delighted with the feedback we are ge ng. We are not here to compete with the other pubs in Markyate but to offer something different. People who haven’t been in a Markyate pub for years are now coming out to drink and socialise. Lots of people are saying that it’s just what the village needs, so we are very pleased with how things are going.” Mar n proudly explained how the ales are stored to keep them at the right temperature. Ale drinkers are discerning about their beer so it has to be right. The décor is modern minimalist yet warm and welcoming. The tradi onal red

Surviving Your Child’s Suicide Do you know anyone, child or adult who has taken their own life?

Chris and TJ

W

hen a child takes their own life, it is a place that, as a parent, you don’t want to go; you can’t conceive it, you can’t process it you definitely do not want to be there. The whole situa on is horrific. But some parents do find themselves in that awful place. One such parent, Markyate dad Chris Sibley, contacted me to tell me about the charity he has cofounded a er the loss of his 16yearold son TJ on July 31st July 2014. Chris came to the office with a takeaway coffee in his hand. In every other way he looked normal: well presented, friendly and confident. The only slight indicator that life was not normal was the coffee, sugges ng that the caffeine li gets him through each day. And since TJ walked in front of a train, he has had to get through 605 days (at the me of wri ng), trying to get on with his own life and being To adver se call 01582 965760

there for his other two children, a boy and a girl. What I thought would be a half an hour mee ng lasted two and a half hours. Chris’ story is tragic but compelling listening. He described how in the early days following the death of his son, he saw a constant blackness in front of his face but gradually the blackness, although always there, had now moved to one side. Some mes it moves back across his face but mostly it sits behind his shoulder. He described TJ as a child who loved his own style and didn’t go with the flow just because everyone else did. He had an encyclopaedic memory for subjects that interested him, such as football and the history of English Kings and Queens. He would obsess about things that captured his imagina on and he would memorise the facts. There was nothing he didn’t know about Liverpool Football Club and he loved heavy rock music. He was Please men on

37 popular with the other kids and he got on very well with adults. One of his teachers told Chris how impressed he was with TJ’s standup comedy rou ne which was astonishingly professional for a young teenager. TJ had met a new girlfriend just two weeks before he jumped off the pla orm and she gave Chris a photo which he treasures as it is the last one he has of TJ. “When I received the photo, it was like winning the lo ery,” said Chris. In every way, TJ was a regular teenager and he showed no signs that he was planning to end his life. In fact, TJ was someone people used to go to for help; he was a sponge for other people’s problems.” Chris said that he has given up asking ques ons about what was happening before 31st July; he was driving himself mad and what has happened cannot be changed or undone. “Looking back, the only indicators at the me were not obvious, but now I can see the significance of them,” said Chris. TJ did have a counselling session but nothing was flagged. “This is why we have created the charity; we want to raise money for people, such as teachers, to be properly trained so they know the right ques ons to ask to iden fy an ‘at risk’ child,” said Chris. For TJ that opportunity was not available. He also inflicted cuts on his arm just a er leaving school. When asked about it he shrugged it off by saying he was sad to be leaving school. He loved school so it seemed believable at the me so no more was made of it. “He hadn’t selfharmed before so we didn’t worry about it. He always spent his weekends with me but the last weekend of his life, when I went to pick him up, he was not there and when I dropped off his brother on the Sunday, he wasn’t there either. It was unusual but not unreasonable for him so I didn’t do anything about it at the me,” said Chris. He didn’t leave a note and he didn’t give any clues about what he was thinking; but a couple of days before he jumped off the pla orm, he told his friends on Facebook that he had a ‘date with a train’. Earlier that day, he bumped into a girl he knew who was wearing a leg cast because she had broken her leg. He helped her walk home, wished her well, happily said good bye, and then walked to the sta on, moved along the pla orm, jumped onto the track and stood in front of an oncoming train. He had it all planned; he knew exactly what he was doing and he didn’t falter from his plan. On the day itself people say he was very happy and jolly. Once he had made his mind up, he had a feeling of contentment, a sort of joy. Maybe it is because he knew the ‘pain’ would be ending soon. “As father and son, we got on really well and we talked all the me but I guess not about the right To adver se call 01582 965760

things,” said Chris. “I have heard other people who have been through the same loss as me say the same – ‘we talked all the me but not about the right things’.” “Since 31st July 2014, I have talked to so many people who know someone close, either a friend or a family member who has taken their own life. I am surprised, as before it happened to me, I didn’t realise how many people are affected by suicide. It is something that people don’t like to talk about as there is a s gma a ached to it somehow and up un l 1961 it was against the law to take your own life. The government thought that by making it illegal, it would stop it. Why would someone who wants to die care about the law?” he asked incredulously.

Sta s cs • There are over 6000 suicides in the UK each year • That's 1 every 2 hours. • Over 75% of these are males under the age of 45. “You never think it will happen to you or impact your life, these things only happen to other people... Don't they?”

The 6,000 suicides per year figure is for those suicides which are recorded. Unless you get a suicide verdict at inquest, they do not contribute to the official figures. So the 6,000 sta s c is massively understated. TJ’s death was recorded as accidental death but Chris believes it was unques onably suicide from the video footage and a Facebook pos ng by his son to friends. A er losing TJ, Chris met other parents whose children had killed themselves; they were all belonged to various support groups. Ini ated by Stuart Falconer who lost his son Morgan aged 15 years, the OLLIE Founda on was formed in December 2015 and since then it has burgeoned. OLLIE FOUNDATION www.theolliefounda on.org OLLIE stands for ‘One Life Lost Is Enough’. The trustees are Chris Sibley, Stuart Falconer and Jane Johnstone, who also lost her son 19yearold Chris to suicide. There are 12 people on the commi ee.

38 The aim of the charity is to raise money to train teachers, GPs, chari es, community workers anyone who works with young people or comes into contact with them on a regular basis, to help raise awareness and spot the signs; training them to ask the right ques ons to get below the surface. “If I can stop one child from taking their life, it will be worth it,” said Chris. To facilitate this they will: • Provide free ASIST (Applied Suicide Interven on Skills Training) and SafeTALK training to professionals who work with young people in Her ordshire and the surrounding area • Train their own ASIST and SafeTALK trainers so that the local community has these trainers readily available. Currently the nearest trainer is based in the Midlands. There have been lots of events planned and ac oned to raise money in the short me that the charity has been going: • Chloe Jones did a fashion show on 21st April • 5th May there is a Fine Dining Experience at Thompson of St Albans • 13th May Morgan Falconer Golf day at Aldwickbury golf club • 30th May there is a 10k Fun Run in London, star ng and finishing in St James’ Park. There are Facebook and Twi er pages – please check them out to find out what is going on.

Chris’ story hit a nerve with me so I had to donate to OLLIE... They have a Givey page, so if you feel the same, please make a dona on to help provide this vital training which will save vulnerable young lives.

www.givey.com/theolliefound I’ve been asked, "Am I star ng to come to terms with it?" That just doesn't happen. There is no ‘coming to terms with it' or ge ng over it, or working through it; there is no other side where, when you get there, everything is normal and you feel like the person you were before they died. All there is, is living with it, carrying it with you. A realisa on that it's changed you and that the person you once were has gone...” Chris Sibley

NEWS UPDATE FROM CHRIS • There are 6 spaces le on the London to Brighton bike ride on the 19th June if anyone’s willing to join to raise some funds. • A group skydiving event to raise money is being planned. Winding back the Clock By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solu ons, Caring for you and your car

W

ell, let’s face it how many of us wish we could do this?! Whether it’s wan ng to appear younger, reversing mistakes or making the most out of what we have, there is a desire to wind back just a few miles to do something differently.

In the same way, a vehicle is more appealing if it appears to have covered less mileage and therefore commands a higher price. It may be a surprise but, in this unlicensed trade, winding an odometer back is currently legal prac ce! So, how can you be sure that what you are purchasing is genuine when clocking is quick and easy to do and very hard to detect on resale? How big is the issue? Vehicle history expert HPI claims the number of cases of clocked cars between March and October 2015 increased by 10 per cent. In addi on, they also predict a poten al 1.7 million mileage being altered leading to poten ally dangerous cars on our roads. The prac ce of car clocking has become easier with To adver se call 01582 965760

the introduc on of digital odometers, providing a growth opportunity for those offering mileage correc on services. Trading Standards report that there are 100 mileage correc on firms across Britain charging from just £75 to reduce the mileage of your car. This significantly increases the value of a car. Used car valua on experts, CAP, advised that dele ng 60,000 miles from the odometer of a 2012 Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi so becomes a 30,000 mile car will increase its value by approximately £3,000. This prac ce isn’t just reserved for dodgy car dealers, but private individuals also. You don’t have to make contact with a ‘mileage correc on’ service operator, but you could purchase yourself a DIY device for £220 that plugs into your car!

Is it Legal? Consumers are protected by the Consumer Regula ons Act and the 2006 Fraud Act. However, neither one of these states the act of tampering with a cars odometer is illegal. In any case, the ability to prove that a car has been interfered with is difficult. This dishonest prac ce is made easier with the popularity of online auc on sites where if you bid on a car from a private individual the car only needs to be sold ‘as described’, and you have no comeback. Indeed, this also applies at auc on houses where you need to check their terms to see Please men on

45 if you have any rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The cars are usually sold ‘as seen’, so you need to be a conďŹ dent and knowledgeable purchaser here! Many of the cars that reputable dealers send to auc on are ones they feel they can’t conďŹ dently sell on their own forecourt because it would compromise their quality standard (such as ďŹ nancially unviable repairs). There are very few instances where mileage can be legi mately altered (such as the odometer breaking), where robust records need to be kept and logged properly safeguarding the current and future owners.

Why do people get involved in this prac ce? The majority of people will be unaware of the safety aspects they are compromising, but for some‌ it’s all about proďŹ t. So, here are the 3 main reasons why people chose to alter their cars mileage.

• Obtain a higher value for the car on a sale Some models can double their value!

• Keep within mileage on ďŹ nance agreements Lease or Contract Hire cars have more favourable payment plans with lower mileage expecta ons as it maintains the cars residual value. If you go over the mileage, you become liable to pay excess mileage which can become expensive.

Berry & Son.

• Gain Mileage Allowance Many large companies run a mileage allowance scheme for sta using their own car on company business. Therefore it is ďŹ nancially beneďŹ cial to move the clock forwards so that you get paid out on 20,000 miles a year rather than 15,000.

46 Safety risk The most concerning part about this prac ce is the safety implica ons. Modern cars rely on mileage to give an indica on of what to service and when parts need changing. By changing the mileage, a clocker will cause conflicts within the cars electronics and interfere with the normal rou nes for servicing and repair. A manufacturer’s warranty will be void if the car is discovered to have been clocked. The onboard computer also holds crucial evidence of a car’s performance, speed and me of an accident. The integrity of the data is paramount if it is to be admissible as evidence in court.

How do you avoid being a vic m? There a few checks you can carry out yourself:

• Carry out a visual check of car

If in any doubt, be safe and make sure you buy from a reputable dealer where the checks have been made for you and legisla on covers you. The European Parliament has announced a complete ban on firms that offer to wind back the mileage on cars and other road vehicles. The Direc ve will explicitly s pulate that, if the odometer is found to have been manipulated with the aim of reducing or misrepresen ng the distance record of a vehicle, the Member State shall ensure that appropriate penal es are in place. In our opinion this legisla on can’t come in quickly enough, but even when it does, there are thousands of clocked cars on the road. So, our advice is ‘buyer beware’! If something looks too good to be true, it usually is. Check the background of a car thoroughly or rely on a trusted expert to do this for you.

Look out for: stone chips on the cars nose, worn pedal rubbers, a shiny steering wheel, worn gear leaver, seat and seatbelt wear. Equally, if they look brand new, they may be hiding the true mileage.

• Check the paperwork Check the mileage on previous MOT cer ficates and the service history. The DVLA are making things easier by being able to access their services online. We have a link from our website to make things easier.

• History Checks There are a few companies who do this, but possibly the most wellknown is HPi. They will check against the na onal mileage database, and whether the car has been registered under a Category indica ng it has been in an accident.

Feed spring bulbs with a mul purpose feed. This will encourage good flowering next year. Don't cut back the leaves un l they have gone brown.

2

3 4

Put plant supports in place before the plants get too big. Canes and obelisks work well.

Keep on top of weeding before weed roots get too big.

5

6

Harden off summer bedding and vegetable seedlings by pu ng them outside in the day and bringing them in at night. A er a week or so and if a mild, dry night is forecast, leave them outside, in a sheltered spot, overnight.

Roses should have been pruned and fed by now. If you haven't got around to it yet then do it now. Prune shoots back to just above a bud and feed with a rose fer liser.
