Village fairs and events go ahead at last Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green and North Harpenden, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham Gaddesden Row.
Village activites resume after two bleak years It’s great to see the return of the village fairs; the Flamstead Scarecrow Festival; The Redbourn Fun Run and a two day festival in Redbourn incorporating the very popular Fete du Velo. It’s so uplifting to be able to socialise and interact after so long; we just need a good summer like that of 2020. Surviving the energy squeeze and inflation As we move on from Covid 19, we have a new crisis; the surging energy prices and 7% inflation. The last time inflation was this high was after the financial crisis in 2008. Most people will feel the squeeze as wages are not going up as fast so if you need some pointers, look at our article on pages 36 and 37 to get some ideas to survive the crisis. Aps for smart phones are a great aid for helping you find the best deals and save money by comparing the big retailers’ prices; do embrace the technology to help you fight the financial squeeze. Early distribution date for MiMagazine We lost two issues of MiMagazine during Covid so we are gradually making up for the lost publications by bringing forward the publication date by a few days for the next few issues to get us back on schedule. Enjoy the early summer.

Sound Barrier broken as boys enjoy rock success
A band of local school friends aged between 12-13 years old, enjoyed success when they reached the finals of Buckinghamshire’s Battle of The Bands in March. The competition, run annually for school-aged local bands by Bucks Music Trust, is now the biggest Battle of the Bands competition in the South-East, so provided a fantastic platform for the boys to showcase their musical talents. Local boys: George (drums), Ben (vocals), Jamie (lead guitar), Charlie (bass guitar) and Matt (keyboard, bass guitar and vocals), all attend Aldwickbury School in Harpenden, and have named their band, Sound Barrier. They have taken their passion and made it into something great. Friendships have deepened, their love of music has grown, and they all have a renewed sense of pride of where they started and how far they have come in such a short period of time. They love covering rock songs by AC/DC, Guns’n’Roses, Black Sabbath, Oasis, Foo Fighters, Alice Cooper (Schools Out, is a must at the end of the summer term) etc, and are looking forward to creating their own songs in due course. They encourage others to ‘follow your passion with energy, enthusiasm, and dedication. Put your heart and soul into it… you never know where it will end. Keep striving to achieve. It is something we truly believe in and hope it inspires you too’. Find out more about their story on: www.TheSoundBarrier.co.uk
TRING BREWERY RAISES £3,000 FOR CHILTERNS DOG RESCUE SOCIETY Wow - a cheque for £3,000 has been presented to Chilterns’ Dog Rescue Society by the team at Tring Brewery, the charity of choice for 2021.
at our bi-annual members evenings and a huge charity raffle to cap off 2021.
Our relationship with the Wendover-based centre originally began in 2020 but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic until 2021. Though this was a tough time for businesses, charities and people alike, we forged on to create a list of twelve specials all named and designed with our canine friends in mind.
The £3,000 raised will help the society with the upkeep of the centre, rehabilitating and rehoming vulnerable dogs in the Chilterns area and beyond. We say a special thank you to Karen at Chilterns’ Dog Rescue Society for her tireless help throughout the project, heading up a team of amazing, dedicated volunteers.
Beers such as K.9, Toto, Hum Pug, Cerberus and Sable were all brewed to raise funds and awareness for Chilterns’ Dog Rescue Society, boosted by fundraising

9 Foundation expands to help young people in Redbourn, Markyate and Flamstead It was 300 years ago that local land owner James Marshall left a remarkable gift, creating a charity that would support young people to achieve long term employment. That charity, James Marshall Foundation (JMF), continues today to award grants to young people under 25 years in financial need for education and career development opportunities. The charity has annual grant funding of £250k, which is generated from its asset base, and awards around 500 grants. After ensuring that the Foundation was on a sufficiently sound financial footing, JMF received approval from the Charity Commission in late August 2021 to expand its catchment area to add a further four villages to the existing locations of Harpenden and Wheathampstead. These are Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead and Kimpton. This is probably the most significant change to JMF over the last 300 years. The journey through education and into work can be an expensive time. The key areas where JMF may be able to help are: · Equipment and travel for work/ apprenticeships · Further education courses

Invest your way out of INFLATION WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE SURE YOU PROTECT YOUR WEALTH The word ‘inflation’ had barely featured in the market’s vocabulary in the last three decades until it suddenly started to come back with a vengeance in 2021. As higher inflation looks set to persist in 2022, finding ways to generate a return on investments greater than inflation will be a key investment theme - otherwise your wealth falls in real terms. SPENDING SPREE There are two basic reasons why inflation has been increasing: supply and demand. Starting with the latter, consumers have been on a spending spree after having spent a large proportion of time during 2020 and 2021 at home bingeing on Netflix. The main reason for the current rise is due to the global price of energy. This has meant higher energy and transport bills for businesses, many of whom pass on the extra costs to their customers. Supply problems and higher shipping costs are also continuing to have an impact on businesses. HEALTHY ECONOMY Central banks kept saying that inflation was ‘transitory’, but this now seems to have been replaced by the word ‘persistent’. The result is that inflation will remain high on the economic agenda in 2022. Inflation is a measure of how much prices have gone up over time. It’s the rate at which cash becomes less valuable - £1 this year will get you further than £1 next year. It tends to be a good sign in a healthy economy, but too much of it can be hard to reel in and control. BOE FORECAST The Bank of England (BoE) [1] expects inflation to reach over 7% by end of spring 2022 and then start to come down after that. That’s because most of the causes of the current high rate of inflation won’t last. It’s unlikely that the prices of energy and imported goods will continue to rise as rapidly as they have done recently. And this means that inflation will eventually decline. To advertise call 07941 661004
Capital Manor Inflation.indd 8
The BoE forecasts the rate to be much closer to their 2% target in two years’ time. But even though the rate of inflation will slow down, the prices of some things may stay at a high level compared with the past. PURCHASING POWER Beating inflation means earning higher returns from an investment than the inflation rate in the economy. If your return on investment is less than the inflation rate, this could basically nullify the returns you have earned. Due to various reasons, the purchasing power of money decreases significantly every year. Investing with inflation in mind is essential for protecting your current and future wealth and involves choosing assets that naturally keep pace with rising prices. These mostly include either real, tangible assets, or investments that pay a variable rate and appreciate or increase over time. LOOKING FOR A BETTER CHANCE OF BEATING INFLATION OVER THE LONG TERM? If you’ve already got an emergency fund, or have excess cash in the bank, it may be time to consider investing some of it to protect your wealth from inflation. Investing some of your money may give you a better chance of beating inflation over the long term. SPRING CHEER IN THE PROPERTY MARKET …a market overview from Simon Robinson of Town & Country estate agents member of The Guild of Property Professionals
T
he desire to move home remains high on the agenda for many, with little sign currently that economic headwinds are impacting the property barometer dial. So far, 2022 has started strongly. According to HMRC, sales volumes in January were 10% higher than the long-term average recorded between 2012 and 2021, and except for a year ago, are the strongest since 2007. Buyer demand remains steadfast and is up 16% year on year. Added to that, property price growth continues to be sustained with Nationwide reporting that the annual price growth in the year to January was at its strongest in over 15 years. Rightmove reported the biggest monthly jump in the asking price of a newly listed property since 1994 and when asked, the majority of agents are still expecting price growth over the next three and 12 month period.
T
he pandemic ‘search for space’ is still playing out in many markets, with prices for detached homes currently seeing the strongest growth of all property types; average prices are up by more than 15% year on year. Although the quantity of property for sale remains low, with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors reporting (barring the market closure in 2020) stock levels per agent were at a record low in January, there are signs of change. New listings in January rose 11% year-on-year, with Rightmove noting a substantial rise in home valuation requests; an indication that many are looking to sell before they buy in current conditions. These should feed through to agents’ books over the coming months. Historically, March is the strongest time to sell, with the highest number of buyer enquiries per property for sale.
U
with rising fuel and energy prices look set to squeeze many household incomes and savings made during the pandemic may well prove to be a much-needed cushion in the short term. However, while interest rates may well rise from the current 0.75%, they remain low by historic standards and so big mortgages are not so daunting for many borrowers.
A
n estimated 68% have a mortgage to pay on their property and any rise in the base rate of interest is a cause for concern. However, with nearly three-quarters of homeowners currently on a fixed-rate deal, and 94% of new loans being issued on this basis, many are protected in the short term. Also, the base rate of interest in the UK has been lower than 1% since February 2009 but experts predict the rate will rise back to 1% by the summer in a bid to curb the rising cost of living. This remains low by historical standards, with mortgages taken out since April 2014 stress-tested to a 6% interest rate. Rental demand also hits a record high
D
emand for rental property has also hit a record level. The net balance of contributors to the RICS survey reported a +64 increase in January. Tenant demand is at its highest-ever recorded level, with Rightmove reporting renter demand 17% higher than in January 2021, and up 33% compared to January 2020. Like the sales market, a shortage of property to let is underpinning prices, leading to rises in average rental values in all areas of the UK. However, according to a Property Academy survey, many landlords are keen to keep existing renters: 76% would maintain a rent level if they were happy with the existing renter.
K governments are announcing their plans for ‘living with Covid’ and hybrid working is evolving. With economic growth of 7.5% in 2021, the UK economy is close to its pre-pandemic level but consumer confidence remains on edge due to the rising cost of living. Increases in the cost of food and clothing, along To advertise call 07941 661004

May is Make Your Will Month
Rennie Grove’s annual Will-writing offer returns in May. You can write or update your Will through local solicitors participating in the scheme, and they will waive their basic Will-writing fee for a donation to Rennie Grove. Writing a Will and keeping it up to date ensures your loved ones will be looked after when you’re no longer here to do it. Without a Will, loved ones will not automatically receive what you want to leave to them. Debbie Matthews, Individual Giving Manager at Rennie Grove, adds: “And when you make or update your Will with a participating solicitor during Make Your Will Month, you’ll be helping other families too. For a suggested minimum donation of £175 for a single Will, or £275 for a pair of mirror Wills, you’ll be saving money, supporting local hospice care and gaining massive peace of mind.” You can choose from around a dozen different law firms located across Herts and Bucks. The solicitors involved can take your bookings for this special deal after 1st April 2022. Each has a limited number of appointments available so book early to avoid disappointment.

As our son Harry’s character develops, and other family dynamics change over time, there are different things to consider. “My partner didn’t have a Will and neither did my stepdad. He has a life-limiting condition and he felt strongly about certain aspects of his estate. When his plans to move nearer to us coincided with Make Your Will Month, it seemed the perfect opportunity for all three of us to sort out our Wills.

Steps to live safely with COVID-19
As we move into late spring, Hertfordshire’s healthcare partners are encouraging residents to be kind and stay healthy by following simple steps to live life safely with COVID-19, stop the spread and protect others. It comes after a recent survey of over 3,700 Hertfordshire residents found : • • • • •
significant number felt ‘cautious’ (39%) about all remaining government restrictions being lifted last month 21% angry 11% worried. And, while 20% were excited, only 15% had no concerns at all. An overwhelming majority (75%) said their health and wellbeing had been impacted by the pandemic.
The simple steps people are encouraged to follow through the campaign are: • • • • • •
Be kind – respect people wearing masks or keeping their distance from you. They may well be very vulnerable to infection. Be informed – know your level of risk and get good, trusted advice on managing it. Be vaccinated or boosted – ensure you and those around you are vaccinated when invited. Be safe – manage your risk when socially mixing (hands, face, space, fresh air). Be prepared – if you get Covid, stay at home and get early treatment, should you need it. Be supported – as well as your family and friends, Herts Help stands ready to offer support.
People are also asked to recognise that everyone will want to go at their own pace now restrictions are lifted. Over 64,000 people in the county are at increased risk from contracting COVID-19 and thousands more will still To advertise call 07941 661004

feel nervous about returning to normal. The campaign also seeks to reassure and support these residents. Workplaces and employers continue to have a duty of care for vulnerable employees. The County Council, District Councils and Herts Better Business for All will continue to offer advice and support to employers to help get vulnerable people back to work as safely as possible. Jim McManus, Executive Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “...we all need to learn together to live with COVID-19 and any new variants that may emerge. The best way to do that is for each person to manage their own risk by continuing to wear a face covering in busy places, wash your hands regularly, limit time somewhere if crowded and stay home if you have Covid. “I would also like to reassure those who are at increased risk from the virus or are concerned about going out. We are here to help you get back to the things you love and miss, but it’s OK to do this when you are ready. There is a wide variety of support available and many services affected during the pandemic are now safely open again.” Over 75% of those we surveyed said they haven’t accessed support of any sort. Yet more than 30% wanted to know more about support that is available and 40% about support for vulnerable people and their families. A key way to access help is through HertsHelp – an independent information and advice service who use a network of community organisations in the county working together to provide support. So, if you are worried about your bills, feeling lonely or isolated, or just not sure who to ask, give HertsHelp a call on 0300 123 4044, visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/covidhertshelp or email info@hertshelp.net.

Pets on Divorce: who keeps the family pet? Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 3.2 million households in the UK have acquired a pandemic pet, according to the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association. This means the country now has 17 million pet-owning homes. The usual first ‘port of call’ when a relationship breaks down is agreeing child arrangements and the separation of finances. The question of pet arrangements and ownership on divorce is often an overlooked, but heartbreaking issue, as the family pet is usually considered a core member of the family unit. So, when a couple separates, who keeps the dog, cat, fish or horse?! English Law Pet-lovers are often shocked to hear, that under English law, their furry friend is treated as an item of personal property, in the same way as an item of furniture in the family home! Therefore, the pet’s wishes, feelings and welfare are not taken into account as they are with children. If parties cannot reach a mutual decision on who keeps the pet, then a court will likely rule in favour of the party who has proof of ownership in their name. Alternatively, a judge could order the sale of the pet and for the proceeds to be split equally. In determining ownership, the Court would consider factors such as who bought the pet and who is registered as the contact with the vet. Spanish Law In a recent Spanish case, a Madrid judge gave joint custody of a dog to an unmarried couple who sought a To advertise call 07941 661004
Pets on Divorce.indd 20
ruling on whom the dog should stay with post-separation. This decision included the consideration of the pet’s welfare for the first time and follows similar decisions in France and Portugal where judges considered pets as sentient beings instead of objects. The English legal position is far removed from the actual significance pets are perceived to have as members of the family, however this is unfortunately not the reality at present and there are no plans for reform on the horizon. The “Pet-Nup” One way of avoiding disputes arising over pets on divorce is to enter into a pre-nuptial agreement with a dedicated clause dealing with what to happen to the pet upon separation, or even a freestanding “pet-nup”. The agreement can deal with the care, ownership and associated expenses of the pet. The court is not obliged under English law to keep to the agreement but unless there have been significant changes, they are likely to regard the agreement as very persuasive. For more information on pre-nuptial agreements, please click here. If you need advice and assistance in dealing with your pet on divorce or with a pre-nuptial agreement dealing with your pet, then please contact a member of the Machins family team. Bedfordshire Autism Voice will hold community based, local meetings
A new partnership has been launched in Central Bedfordshire to better support local adults with autism. Central Bedfordshire Council have created Bedfordshire Autism Voice in collaboration with Autism Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire Autism Voice will hold community based, local meetings to discuss issues that are important to people with autism living in Central Bedfordshire. Previously Bedfordshire’s Think Autism Partnership Board, which was introduced in 2009, met every three months to discuss services across Bedfordshire. A review carried out in 2019 showed that 60 per cent of people surveyed felt that meetings should focus on local issues and things impacting on people’s daily lives. Instead of covering the whole of Bedfordshire, 93 per cent said they would like to try a more local meeting. As a result, Bedfordshire Autism Voice has been formed. It will hold meetings once every three months in locations in the north, south and middle of Central Bedfordshire. A team of professionals - the Bedfordshire Autism Voice Alliance - will meet every six months to support Bedfordshire Autism Voice in making changes. Attending a meeting Adults who are autistic, or a parent or carer for someone with autism, can attend. Each meeting will be led by the same specialist coordinator to ensure continuity for attendees. The next local meeting is: • Dunstable: Wednesday 29 June, 11am – 12:30pm To find out about meetings in your local area, please email: Bedfordshireautismvoicegroup@autismbeds.org

Free course to support parents of pre-school aged children Central Bedfordshire are helping parents understand children’s behaviour and feelings by running a free programme to support parents and carers of pre-school aged (three to five-year-old) children. The Parenting Puzzle programme aims to help parents and carers feel more confident and increase their understanding of their children’s feelings and needs, and how children communicate these. It aims to help you: • understand why children behave as they do • recognise the feelings behind the behaviour • explore different approaches to discipline • find ways to develop co-operation and self-discipline in children The programme is available either as a ten-week programme – which provides a creche facility – or a four-week programme made up for four workshops. It is provided by Family Links, a national charity and training organisation dedicated to the promotion of emotional health at home, at school, and at work. The Trust Register- Do you know your duties if you are dealing with the administration of an estate?
T
he Trust Registration Service (TRS) was set up in 2017 and is a register of beneficial ownership of trusts. When it was initially set up, Trustees were required to register on TRS if the trust was liable to Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax or Stamp Duty Land Tax. The information on the register was accessible to HMRC and other law enforcement agencies, but not to third parties. In October 2020, amendments to the Money Laundering Regulations came into force introducing new rules extending the scope of TRS so that it applies to a wider range of trusts, both based in the UK and some non-UK Trusts regardless of whether or not the trust is liable to pay tax. Relevant trusts must register with TRS if they are liable to UK taxation in any year. Although estates themselves are not subject to registration, in some instances Personal Representatives will need to register the estate, for example, if they are selling property worth £500,000 or more. Bearing in mind local property prices, many Personal Representatives may be caught and may be unaware of their obligations. There are deadlines for registration of new and existing trusts; for existing non-taxable trusts that have not yet been registered this is 1st September 2022. Trustees are also required to ensure the TRS is kept up to date, and again there are deadlines for doing so. Types of trusts The most common type of trust that needs to be registered is an “express trust”. These include bare trusts, discretionary trusts, interest in possession trusts (if created on death they are excluded from registration for two years as with other will trusts), protective trusts, pilot trusts (often set up to receive To advertise call 07941 661004

pension benefits) created before 6th October 2020 containing more than £100, and pilot trusts created after 6th October 2020 regardless of amount held. Charitable trusts and Child Trust Funds do not have to register. Bereaved minor trusts and statutory trusts (created on an Intestacy) do not have to register as an express registrable trust but may have to register if they have a UK tax liability. For trusts relating to land, eg where two or more people have bought a property together, where the Trustees and Beneficiaries are the same people, there is no requirement to register. However, if there is a Declaration of Trust in place and the Trustees/Legal Owners of the property are not the same as those with a beneficial interest then the trust is required to register. This may occur where a third party has lent monies to assist with a property purchase and wishes to protect their investment, or, for example, children have assisted their parents to purchase a property under the Right to Buy Scheme. Excluded trusts Trusts for retirement policies are excluded from registration during the lifetime of the person assured provided that the policy only pays out on their death, terminal illness, critical illness or permanent disablement, or to meet the cost of healthcare services. Information required The information required by the TRS can be submitted online and the type of information required depends on whether the Trustees and Settlors (the person or people creating the trust) are individuals or a business or organisation, such as a charity. Trusts with a UK tax liability need to provide more Please mention

extensive information, including details of the trust assets as part of the annual tax return. There are penalties for failing to provide the information required by the appropriate deadlines. However, given difficulties with both registering new trusts and updating the register, and a recognition that the last tax year was the first year that trustees have been able to meet their obligations, HMRC had indicated that they will not automatically be charging penalties. However, it is not clear how long this honeymoon period will last.- HMRC has certainly not been lenient on penalties in relation to late reporting of capital gains on UK properties.

With the rising cost of energy to heat and light our homes, and fuel rising exponentially, it is even more important that we review our spending where we can. So, is there any way we can help ourselves when it comes to using our cars? As the age-old adage says, ‘look after the pennies, and the pounds will look after themselves’. It won’t remedy everything, but it’s a good place to start… Driving style Review your own driving style and it can make a difference to fuel consumption and save you money as well as be more environmentally friendly. A few years ago, a trial with AA staff revealed that by taking a few steps, in a week they saved 10% off their fuel bills and the best saved and impressive 33%, so it’s worth a go! Drive smoothly and accelerate gently – Avoid unnecessary braking by reading the road ahead and allowing yourself the time to decelerate smoothly by leaving the car in gear and releasing the accelerator in time. Change up gears earlier – Some cars have an indicator on the dashboard to encourage use of the most efficient gear. For those who haven’t, the AA recommend changing gear at around 2,000rpm (diesel) or 2,500rpm (petrol), to prevent labouring the engine. Keep rolling – by reading the road ahead, it may not be necessary to stop completely. Be aware of traffic ahead, or traffic lights, and slow down early to avoid stopping and starting which uses more fuel. Idling –Don’t switch off to save fuel unless your engine is warm, and you’re not expecting to move for three minutes or so (and you know you have a good battery!). This doesn’t apply to intelligent cars with stop/start as they have components and systems that ensures they will restart and operate efficiently. To advertise call 07941 661004
32-35 Redbourn Autos.indd 32
Adhere to the speed limit – The faster you go, the more inefficient your fuel use. The AA say driving at 70mph you’ll use up to 9% more than at 60mph and up to 50% more than at 50mph. And if you take it up to 80mph, you can expect to use 25% more fuel than at 70mph. Reduce your reliance on electrics – If you don’t need them, turn them off! There is a tendency to forget when we have used the car facilities such as the rear window heater, or the demister fan. As soon as they have done their job, turn them off. Air conditioning – this doesn’t necessarily need to be on all the time. At lower speeds it can increase fuel consumption, but barely noticeable at higher speeds. Use of windows could be better around town. However, for the system to remain efficient and working, it needs to be used at least once a week. Don’t coast – it can be tempting when you’re trying to reduce your fuel consumption, to coast down hills out of gear. This leaves you unable to control the vehicle and react quickly to presenting situations. In any case, it doesn’t save any fuel as the car has already done this for you. Your car only uses fuel when it is needed. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) cuts the fuel supply to the injectors anyway, so there is nothing to be gained. Reduce Drag - A car travelling at any speed uses a specific proportion of fuel to overcome drag. Cars are built to be aerodynamically efficient, so anything added to the car increases drag and therefore fuel used. Therefore, if you are not using your roof box, roof rack, bike rack etc, make sure they are removed before you travel to reduce your fuel consumption. Also think about unnecessary weight in the car such as superfluous luggage in the boot. Tyres When replacing your tyres, look at their ratings. All Please mention

The rising cost of Fuel… By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solutions, Caring for you and your car tyres are rated for fuel efficiency, wet grip, and noise levels and help with the efficiency of your driving style mentioned above. Fuel efficiency- The energy lost when a tyre is rolling is referred to as, ‘rolling resistance’. Lower rolling resistance reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Just like your kitchen appliances, they are rated between A – G. Wet grip provides you with information on the ability of the tyre’s grip on wet roads. Tyres with excellent grip (A rating) have shorter braking distance.
very competitive, should you have one near you. If you can, make sure you don’t need fuel when the motorway is the only choice! Supply and demand mean they are exceptionally high. Purchasing a car If you happen to be looking for a new car, it is worth considering: • •
The tyres exterior noise levels are expressed as decibels. The greater the decibels, the noisier the tyre. As well as selecting the right tyre, make sure all tyres are inflated to the right pressure, and have been balanced. If they are wearing unevenly, make sure all four wheels are alignment checked as they could be pulling against each other. Due to many global external influences, there has been a shift in competitive edge away from online retailers, so it is worth speaking to your local garage first before you make a tyre purchase… and the odds are they can fit it the same day, so you’re not inconvenienced either! This is especially a contributory factor to those with electric cars where the weight of the car expediates tyre wear. Fuel Without stating the obvious, fuel is currently at an all-time high. Shop around to make sure you are paying the lowest price. Supermarkets have been synonymous with lower fuel prices, but don’t forget some of the independent fuel stations who are also

•
Cost of servicing – the bigger the car, the higher the cost of regular servicing Cost of repairs – parts are more expensive for different makes and on some cars simple jobs such as changing a light bulb involve removing the bumper! Cars are primarily designed for aesthetics, comfort, and efficiency and not so much thought given to the ease of repairs! Fuel type – petrol/diesel/electric? This decision isn’t just about cost, but you may also be considering the environment. If considering electric, make sure you have a choice of where it can be serviced/repaired. Independents are notably cheaper than main dealers, but not many currently have the knowledge to support you. Check before you buy.
Technology Over the last ten years, technology has marched on at a rapid rate. We now have Advanced DriverAssistance Systems, such as park assist, active cruise control and sensors and cameras that detect close objects. More wires and sensors, and a more sophisticated onboard computer, lead to more complex and sophisticated diagnostic requirements and regular calibration.

The equipment needed is more expensive than before, the knowledge of the technicians is paramount and if you are unlucky enough to need any of it replaced, it comes at a higher cost. For example, the reverse sensors are often mounted on the bumper which was originally designed to diffuse impact, but now also carries sensors and the associated wiring. It could mean it is more cost effective to replace the bumper rather than the sensor that may be damaged. The same is true when wing mirrors break. Sometimes you can replace the mirror, on other occasions it requires a complete wing mirror complete with wiring and repeat indicators! Parts We have covered the impact of the quality of parts that are used. Cheaper parts tend to wear quickly or fail to work or just don’t fit properly. They can be very tempting but can lead to paying for subsequent rectification work, a replacement part, as well as the labour to fit them. As manufacturers race for the most efficient cars, they have started making cars with aluminium parts which are much lighter than the traditional iron or steel. However, aluminium is an expensive metal and when a part fails, it cannot be replaced for a cheaper steel alternative as it would put too much stress on other components. Although the use of aluminium started with premium brands, it is expected it will be extended across a wider market to include recycling old car parts for new ones. Its eco-friendly, but costly currently. Regular Maintenance Make sure you follow a regular servicing

routine to ensure the cars efficiency, optimise its environmentally friendliness, and prevent unnecessary higher repair costs. This is recommended by all manufacturers, consumer, and motoring, organisations, so it’s difficult to ignore or understand why people do! A service is not the same as an MOT. An MOT checks the visual safety of a car on the day of the test, a service is an in-depth check of parts for wear and tear to ensure they are safe for the coming year and also replacement of oil and filters. An MOT tester is prevented from removing parts, which makes this harder to judge.
Choose your garage wisely. ‘You get what you pay for’ is certainly true here. Weigh up the pros and cons. Garages should be able to demonstrate a mix of abilities and qualifications which enable them to have the experience and knowledge to work on your car. Remember technology moves on very quickly and cars are no different. If your regular mechanic does not maintain their expertise, it becomes out of date very quickly. So, if your car is the only method of transport available to you, you can reduce your fuel costs and become more environmentally friendly by: • Driving appropriately • Remove anything that may cause drag • Consciously choose tyres for their fuel efficient • Shop around for Fuel • Choose a car to your budget and technological requirements and remember to include maintenance costs (including cost of parts) • Regularly servicing your car to manufacturer’s schedule

Cost of living crunch?
Tips on how to survive the squeeze Gas and oil prices are on the rise. From 1st April, about 18 million households on standard tariffs will see an average increase of £693 - from £1,277 to £1,971 per year. •
Some 4.5 million prepayment customers will see an average increase of £708 - from £1,309 to £2,017. Bills are going up because the energy price cap - the maximum price suppliers in England, Wales and Scotland can charge households, is being raised. Energy firms have been able to increase bills by 54% following the introduction of the new cap on 1st April. The price cap is reviewed every six months, and prices are expected to rise yet again in October. A report by the bank Investec has warned bills could reach £3,000 a year! Energy bills won’t rise immediately for customers on fixed rates, but many are likely to see a significant increase when their deal ends. The amount your bill will go up depends on how much energy you use, so what can you do to reduce the pressure of increased energy prices?
• • • • •
1.
Only put enough water in the kettle for the number of cups you need to fill.
2.
Keep you fridge full and dust free (a full fridge works less hard than an empty fridge. Dust the coils behind it to keep them working efficiently)
3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Use the microwave rather than the oven and hob. Use slow cooker Wash up in a bowl of warm water. Don’t leave the hot tap running Always fill your washing machine; do not run a cycle when it is only half full - this saves water too. Wash clothes at 30 degrees Let clothes dry naturally - don’t use the tumble dryer Spend one minute less in the shower. Switch off lights when you leave the room Turn down the temperatue on your hairdryer and straighteners Keep radiators clean and dust-free. Close curtains to stop heat escaping Switch off radiators you are not using.
9.
Put tin foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room Turn your thermostat down by 1 degree
10.
Draft-proof your windows and doors
11.
12.
13.
Get a smart metre. Many energy suppliers will supply a smart metre free of charge. This will let you see which appliances use the most energy. Set a budget and try to stick to it. Switch off appliances which use the most energy
According to Smart Energy GB, 86% of smart metre households were able to make changes to their behaviour that resulted in saving money.

Smart Shopping to make your budget stretch...
1.
2.
Seek Out Reduced Items When buying food, especially meat, always be on the lookout for markdowns which offer savings of up to 50% off on meat, poultry and fish nearing its expiration date. Ask at Customer Services at what time of day, expensive items like meat and fish are most likely to be on mark down Always Buy Store Own Brand Canned goods, dried pasta, cereal, baking staples like flour and sugar, and even spices are good examples of generic or store brands that are just as good as named brands. App Specials Look out for new shopping discounts available when you use store Apps. Tesco offer My Clubcard Plus. If you sign up on the App, you pay £7.99 per month but get 10% off two big shops per month, on top of other Club Card offers. So on two £200 shops you would save £40 less the £7.99 monthly fee, a saving of £32.01p.
3.
4.
5.
Look out for the Price Matched items Supermarkets compete with each other by price matching with the budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl. Look for priced matched items. Use Apps To Find Savings Sometimes technology is your best bet to locate the best deals, which isn’t always an easy task.

6.
Sign Up For Loyalty Programs Grocery stores want to have returning customers — that’s why they offer loyalty programs.
7.
Check out which supermarkets that have the best deals on your favourite products. Download the Ap trolley.co.uk. You can get alerts when a price changes
8.
9.
Don’t Shop at Eye Level Grocery stores tend to stock their most expensive items at eye level, knowing that customers are most likely to grab these items. To find the best grocery deals, make sure to scan shelves from top to bottom instead of just grabbing the first item you see. Buy your favourites when they are on offer
10.
Don’t fall for three for two unless you can eat three before the use by date
11.
Don’t waste food. Don’t buy more than you can use and if you do, make sure you cook the food and freeze it before its use by date
12.
If you waist-line is expanding, take this opportunity to cut down the size of your portions. The rising obesity problem in this country is down to eating too much stodge and sugars so take this opportunity to reduce your in take and save money. Please mention

Bogtrotters of Dunstable WELCOME NEW MEMBERS...
Bogtrotters are a Dunstable based group. We alternate between long and short walks (5 miles and up to 14 miles) on Saturdays and Sundays. We also run some short and easy walks. Generally the longer the walk the faster the walkers (particularly on a Thursday). We also do trips away and have social evets on a regular basis... We are a friendly lot and new members are always welcome. You can find a walk you fancy and just turn up - or perhaps ring the walk leader and ask questions. People can try out a few walks with no commitment whatsoever, but if you want to join, membership is only £10 a year. Keep an eye on the website www.Dunstablebogtrotters.co.uk as we are changing the way we organise walks and are currently running a rolling programme as and when leaders are available. 0796 4291892

M1 short cut through Redbourn causes chaos On a cold, wet night, who would have expected to find a full National Express coach stuck on the grass verge as it struggled to turn around in a culde-sac? But these were the scenes that welcomed residents of the Hill Top in Redbourn. But did they cast the issue aside as someone else’s problem? No! Residents of Hill Top and Coopers Meadow came out in support, opening their homes for comfort breaks for the passengers, making tea, coffee and hot chocolate whilst others helped to dislodge the coach to allow him to continue on his journey. The community was unfailing with their support as spades helped dig out the embedded tyres and different materials were used to create traction. Local garage, Redbourn Auto Solutions were also on hand to support. The community of Redbourn has always been a supportive one, but this particular evening they excelled.
