n a past life, I worked as an Intelligence Officer. I was a spy. Part of the work I did involved moving among and relating to communities that bred young men who turned to extremism. To say that I didn’t belong in those neighbourhoods would be an understatement: I was an openly-indentified agent of the Canadian Government; I didn’t share a language or religious background with the people in front of me; culturally, we were from different worlds. Ideologically, I was the enemy.
Adam Nesrallah Founder, Ronin Training www.ronintraining.ca info@ronintraining.ca @RoninTrng For me, the study of martial arts was my crucible. Day in and day out, my Sifu would pile on more pushups, more rounds of sparring, more slaps in the back of the head! There were days I hated that man; Days I hated myself for being so weak. But day after day, year after year, I kept training. The challenges grew more onerous. The opponents grew tougher, faster, and more aggressive. Every time I conquered a fear, Sifu would find a new one to throw at me. One-armed sparring! Blindfolded ground fighting! Boxing versus a knife fighter!
How did I manage to get in front of these people and get them to help the Government, sometimes against their own beliefs? Nothing was given freely, no opponent relented. The only way I could prevail was through relying on my training, tenacity and Getting to the front door in the most dangerous places in this self-confidence. city required something else: Confidence. There was little left in the real world that repeatedly informed by one major characteristic, could actually threaten me now; it’s just how I feel about myself. entrepreneurship It’s 2010 and I started my training business but didn’t register it as an official business . So, I wrote it on my to do list for Monday and then Monday went by and it got pushed to Tuesday’s “To Do” list and then, to the following week and soon... a year had gone by and I still hadn’t registered it. One day, I came home and saw the reminder to register my business, the post it note on the fridge. THERE. There’s my bull staring right at me. It’s in my path, freaking me out. This BIG thing, registering my business. I had to build up courage and move past it.
Bull With Majeed Mogharreban
I
t all started with a snow cone business. Majeed Mogharreban’s spark of enthusiasm with start ups began at 16 with dangerously high levels of optimism combined with ignorance. Yet, it set him on an unstoppable path to success. Before he knew it, he had owned and sold 5 successful businesses and traveled to 24 countries before the age of 21. Today, Majeed is Learning Tree International’s #1 Trainer. He mentors people on how to win at life and get paid for doing what they love. So how do you get paid for doing what you love? Majeed says it’s based on your own unique MAP. Three things must intersect to build your MAP: Market, Aptitude and Passion. Understanding what the Market wants , using your Aptitude to solve problems the market will pay for, and combining them both with a dose of Passion. Passion is defined by doing something you enjoy. You know that you enjoy something when time seems to fly by in a given moment. These three areas must intersect in order to create the MAP. In other words, discover your passions, leverage your strengths and solve problems profitably. Majeed’s passion is to help people find their path and to walk it. This is Majeed’s magic formula in helping you get from point A to point “Be.”
As simple as it sounds, many people get stuck with the MAP. Majeed has a keen way to harness one’s entrepreneurial spark. He inspires people to build certainty and success by encouraging their inner resolve. Each person is then able obtain confidence in their capability to achieve and move past fear. “We must learn to use the feeling of fear and transcend the moment by asking: Why am I experiencing this emotion? Then, do the action needed to overcome the fear.” I asked Majeed to share with me how he transforms fear into success. It was his Aha! moment for winning at life: The Bull. “It was 2006. Summer. I see him walk up to me and so I ask him in Spanish, Sir, aren’t you afraid of the bull? The old man looks at me like I am crazy and says “but it’s only a cow.” Four years later, and I am here in Ottawa.

Should you invest in syndicate mortgages? I
nvesting in syndicate mortgages is a popular topic these days. More and more people are seeking to move their money out of the markets given the low or negative returns in the last year or so. The question is where to invest to get a reasonable return? Focus, Grow and Profit with
Angela Sutcliffe

W
hat if one day you woke up to discover that your bank account had only ninety-eight dollars left in it, could you start a business from scratch? How would you do it, if you had to pay rent, buy food for yourself, your three dogs and two horses? This was the exact predicament Angela Sutcliffe suddenly found herself in. Without the promise of a next paycheck, Angela wondered what she could do to generate income immediately? With 50$ of her 98$, she came up with a business idea. A few short years later, she had managed to turn that initial fifty dollars into a half-a-million dollar business. In today’s dollars, that result would have been a seven-figure achievement.
“Most businesses struggle or fail,” she says, “because the owner doesn’t understand that when you own a business, you actually own two businesses - the one that sells your product or service, and the actual “business” of running your business. Most people get stuck on the delivery end and forget about the management end, she says, and they’re left with a business with no direction, and nobody running it - so they continue to scramble to keep up with the day-to-day.” “I am your everyday average person, nothing fancy, just down to earth, been-there-done-that practical experience and skills. I’ve learned the hands-on way how business really works”. It’s harnessing this r practical experience and translating it into a unique process that is natural for each owner to implement. This leads them on their path to success. The advantage is that Angela has earned the title Smart Old Broad (S.O.B.) after riding the wave of success and failure throughout five recessions and two personal life setbacks; which forced her to build from scratch each time. “Business is rarely a straightforward path to success - it usually has some detours along the way. Success isn’t about never falling off the track, it’s about how quickly you can get back on”. That’s why Angela doesn’t teach “success formulas” - she gives business owners tools to use and teaches them how to use them. After all, she says, it’s not what you know, but what you do with what you know that makes you successful.
Impressive results, yet not an easy process. Seven months of eating Kraft dinner does not, by any standards, sound glamorous to me. Yet, Angela insists that sacrifice is part of building a business. She had taken those initial fifty dollars to buy a small amount of flyers to advertise her new cleaning service, Mrs. Mop.
Angela’s passion to coach others to success focuses on the importance of watching trends, knowing how to captivate the local market and staying on top of profit margins. She makes “knowing your numbers” fun. Yet, Angela insists “It’s your life jacket”. Angela works with many different industries, and takes ideas and best practices from one industry and applies them in new and unique ways to other industries.
To make money fast, Angela had no time for procrastination, perfectionism or excuses. Angela achieved success by being laser focused. She developed a business model which would quickly allow her to replace her role as cleaner and put systems and processes in place to hire others. This allowed her to focus on creating profitability and left her the freedom to out-market her competition.
Angela’s bubbly enthusiasm, strategies and tools encourage people to move past fear of failure and roadblocks. Everything Angela teaches fits in an envelope that’s current. It’s about how you use today’s resources to stay up-to-date and relevant. Could your business thrive in a recession? Are you surpassing sales targets? With Angela, be prepared to achieve and be at the top of your game.
The systems Angela put in place continued to build Mrs. Mop was the key for her to thrive through three recessions throughout her fourteen years of business before selling it. Now that’s impressive.
We often find moments where we are stuck or struggling to achieve success. So what’s Angela’s advice?
The question in my mind: could this successful system deliver results all over again if started today? The answer: Yes. Angela’s discovered a method that others could use to achieve success in their business. Today, Angela uses her business knowledge to help harness the talents of others and turn their dreams into successful realities. Since each owner and each business is unique, Angela works with owners to build customized systems that each owner can manage. Angela insists that the process she uses is tailored to the individual business owner so that they may achieve their desired goals. Angela says that two companies may appear similar on the surface, the owner’s vision, approach, skills and capacity can be totally different. There is no cookie cutter approach to success. This tailored approach is what makes Angela’s mentoring and business coaching somewhat unique. 10 • successbydesignmagazine.COM
ASK for the business (ABC = Always Be Closing). Become so visible that you can never be invisible again.” • Go ultra-high end or bundle: In today’s economy, two things are happening... people are spending less, and people are losing their jobs. The secret to surviving this kind of economy is to either go ultra high end, where the marketplace has more ability to absorb economic hard times and will continue to buy the products and services they want - or to bundle or package products and services and sell at lower prices to more people. Bundling simply means that, you may now offer something to a group of people that will bring in the same amount of money for the time spent, but it’s not all coming out of one person’s pocket. • Surround yourself with the right advisors: Being surrounded by the right kind of people is so helpful. With Mrs. Mop, I had my “right hand” manager. We met every morning with the toaster on the table and a pot of coffee and went over what was happening in the business - and brainstormed all the “what’s next’s”. I have my own advisors and coaches to talk to. I think the most important thing is to get an objective outside view on both you and your business. • On overwhelm: Can’t focus? Give yourself permission to go out of the office to take a walk. Have a set time to return. “Maybe an hour - maybe until x o’clock. -But once time is up, it’s back to work.” This will put an end to the mind chatter. • On Procrastination: When you don’t feel like cleaning your house, turn on every cleaning appliance to set the mood. It’s the same with business, when procrastination calls to you, call others, leave voice messages, emails and reach out on social media to people. Once they start replying to you, your energy to sell will galvanize you into action. • On what to do next: When you can’t think of what you should do next, pick up the phone and call someone - not family or friends, but a prospect, or a past customer or client, just to check in and find out how THEY’RE doing. They’ll be so happy you called, and you may get a nice testimonial, or some repeat or referral business for your trouble. And that’s the key to success... consistent contact. Be top of mind.

Do I always make the right day to day decisions for Flapjack’s? No, definitely not. That being said, one of my strongest attributes is the fact that I make sure to adapt and change constantly, to make improvements. If you are passionate about your business endeavours and understand the importance of responding to situations rather than reacting, you will be successful. You may not hit a home run at your first time to bat. But get back up to the plate and keep swinging.
There are a lot of naysayers and negative people in our circles. If you want to be successful and make your idea work, you have to cut ties with people that will bring you down. Sacrificing to achieve your ultimate goals is important. Success does not come without sacrifice. Whether you take a temporary financial sacrifice to make it happen, a relationship sacrifice, or a lifestyle sacrifice. Sacrifice is necessary and one cannot be scared of sacrifice if they are looking towards achieving their goals. What’s next for Flapjack’s? Corey says he’d like to focus on perfecting a few things before taking Flapjack’s Canada wide. Soon Flapjack’s will become a household name.

is passion? Hair. Sam Rabaa believes that beauty is in building community… and it seems his clients agree. There’s something more interesting to Sam’s success at running a seemingly ordinary hair salon. It’s hidden in Sam’s humility; and not visible to the naked eye. Raba Hair Studio is a small, but cozy place to get your hair done. Yet, how could it compete with First Choice Hair Cutters, a franchise, not to mention the dozens of upscale hair salons in the city? Even more interesting, Sam is not threatened by the competition. In fact, one of Ottawa’s most popular hair stylists was initially coached by Sam. This is not Sam’s first hair salon. He has started from scratch built a successful salon, sold it and then did it again and again. He has learned to navigate successfully through the day-to-day operations, cash flow and create and sustain loyal clients.

n the heart of Vanier, a shiny new business has emerged- a series of ebikes sparkle in the window of EbikePlus on Montreal Road. “What?” you say. In Vanier? Vanier, a community traditionally associated as bleak, blah, boring, filled with poverty and crime. Why would anyone want to launch a brand new business in the heart of Vanier? It seems that ebikers agree. The caring staff and service has people returning to buy a second and sometimes third bike.
