Excavation and redesign of Sphinxes Avenue Luxor 2007 National project of developing Luxor
Client: Ministry of Housing & Luxor Governorate Location: Luxor, Egypt Plot area: 500 acres Budget: $100 millions Joint Experts & Consultants: Under the patronization of FEDA Design Research and Studies Unit, Cairo, Egypt Joint with Archplan Consultancy firm And Clemson University, Landscaping Department
Project Statement Luxor, once the capital of ancient Egypt, surrounds some of the world’s most important archaeological treasures, including the Temples of Luxor and Karnak. Contemporary Luxor is under continuing pressure from historic tourism, and increasing unplanned urban growth. The recent uncovering of the remarkably intact Avenue of the Ram Headed Sphinxes that connects the temples of Luxor and Karnak, and bisects the city poses a significant urban design problem, given its location four meters below existing urban fabric.

Concept: Avenue of the Sphinxes Archaeological Boulevard and Open Museum The Avenue of the Sphinxes Open Museum concept: extends the protection, improvement, enlargement and beautification of the archaeological areas into the urban areas on both sides of the Avenue of the Sphinxes: enhancing historic resources in these areas; and establishing new heritage residential districts to replace existing inadequate housing. The Avenue of the Sphinxes Archaeological Boulevard and Open Museum contains the following elements: the Avenue of the Sphinxes archaeological site, two parallel linear parks, gateway bridges with paired land uses and Avenue entry portals, three land use zones with corresponding landscape zones along the linear parks, paired public open spaces, and a pedestrian street system that interconnects the Avenue with its surroundings.
The Avenue of the Sphinxes Archaeological Boulevard and Open Museum: - Utilizes design materials and forms that reflect ancient patterns and forms found during excavation or documented in the archaeological record. - Incorporates public education and interpretation through displays at its entry portals. - Incorporates performance and festival spaces at two amphitheatres that connect the upper and lower grades of the existing city and the Avenue. Vertical design elements of the Boulevard and Open Museum reflect a change from ancient to contemporary in materials structures, topography, and flora.

Concept:
According to the master plan of the national project of developing Luxor, done by Archplan Consultants - Prof. Dr. Ayman Ashour, the consultant team simulated the concept of Thebes Guards as if the existing Egyptians intend to arise to protect the ancient monuments of their ancestors by building a barrier between the old Thebes and the modern one. Those Guards are 8 similar towers as the 8 Egyptian Gods( Shu, Tenut, Nut, Geb, Isis, Osiris, Seth and Neftes) and the ninth is the great God "RA" which has been simulated as the great open theater 1000 person behind the Karnak Temple All Guards are rising over a 3km long, 300 m wide Plateau which is 15 m high above ground level covering the railway. Thebes Plateau is parallel to the Sphinxes avenue connecting Luxor and Karnak Temples, which is the most greatest discovering project under construction now in Luxor. Thebes 8 Guards or towers have a laser projection to all tombs in the west bank as if they are looking after their ancestors, also to the Sphinxes Avenue, Karnak and Luxor Temple. The laser beams source is the Sun by using sun radiation collectors Behind the Plateau and the Thebes Guards is the new city of Thebes or Luxor. It has been designed to have the spirit of the Egyptian Soul in a contemporary urban environment. The concept depends on how to invest and protect our ancient culture and antiquates.

Concept:
The concept was to have the spirit of Luxor temples in a contemporary way of design. We used the Egyptian colors, Motives and some abstract elements from the ancient Egyptian architecture in Luxor. Colored glass, blue ceiling and Egyptian elements give special meanings we need in a harmony way for the Hall. Materials used to get the elements and Motives was the painted GRC in cladding the walls with marble stones, Granite tiles used to get floors pattern which made by using the soft and hard texture. Lighting system depends on 3 types of light, the first gained from colored glass windows, the second is direct spot lights from ceiling and the third is indirect light targeting the decorative elements used in the space. Some art work used to cover few parts of wall to get the feeling of Real Luxor outside the station

Date: Designed 2007 Client: Ministry of Housing CUBE Consultation services: Concept and schematic design Location: Giza, Egypt Plot area: 2400 acre Budget: $10 milliard Income of investments: $50 milliard
Concept:
The national project of developing the greater Cairo starts with this vision which had been presented to the ministry of housing and then to the prime Minister of Egypt. This vision depends on re-invest Cairo's main features, monuments and the Nile river. Cube studio starts to think how to get a new Cairo by 2050, how to develop the illegal communities around and in greater Cairo which includes Giza and new cities beside Cairo such as 6th of October City and New Cairo. The main feature of Cairo is Giza’s Pyramids. Our target was how to develop their surrounding and reinvest the greater buildings on Earth "Giza Pyramids" The concept was discovered by Dr.Ashraf Abdel Mohsen, that the axe of the most famous street in Cairo "Gamet eldowal elarabeia" in Mohandessin area is the same axe of the 3 Pyramids. This axe is passing through an illegal housing area. The project includes planning for a new neighborhood for the demolished area along the avenue. It also includes roads and green areas inside the rest of the informal housing area existing around the avenue.
The Project: The Avenue is 1 km wide and 10 km long "2400 acre", and is divided into 3 sectors: Khufu Park: is 400 m wide and is located in the middle sector along the whole length of the avenue. It has underground services such as: cafeterias, restaurants, shopping malls, toilets, subway and all activities needed for visitors. Khufu Plaza: is attached to the pyramid’s plateau in the end of the avenue, we call it "RA Plaza". It is a huge circle of 1.2 km diameter for festivals and celebrations, it also has 2 underground stories contains parking area and services. Khufu Guards: are the two zones beside the park, each one is 300 m wide along the avenue. This area is for investments such as: Hotels, Business, Branding Malls…etc The Avenue has 4 main roads of 50m width dividing the 3 sectors. The middle roads "Park roads" are one way direction for cars and tourists buses, and the other roads are for transportations. A Monorail is one of the main transportation means along the avenue. By creating this project we can have the longest avenue allover the world for the most famous monument.

Concept: In an initiative to develop the greater Cairo, the government plans to relocate several ministries from their original location downtown, to a new complex in the outskirts of the city. Unlike governmental buildings in Egypt, the design approach of this complex is rather new; it mixes business with entertainment in a great "Park", in an attempt to narrow the gap between the people and its government. The organically inspired design; where the former grid melts into spontaneous lines and transparent forms, conveys the government's new visions and aspirations for a future that holds closer interaction with the people.
The Project Sectors: The project has 3 phases that consist of 8 sectors or" Parks" as bellow: Conference Park: It includes the largest conference hall in the world with a capacity of five thousand seats, provided with sufficient parking space and other services. Plot area: 200 acres Governmental Park: Its layout constitutes a triangle representing the relation between three governmental institutions. Enclosing the People's Plaza at the heart of the park, The People's Assembly extends along the base of this triangle opposite to The Shoura/Legislation Council, whereas the prime minister's office lies at the apex. The relocated ministries acquire twenty new headquarters that exist inside the triangle; and are designed to bring nature indoors through wide glass facades and smooth masses. Plot area: 1600 acres Business Park: The business capital of the project; it includes corporate headquarters and office towers, overlooking the lake underneath the people's plaza. Sufficient parking space and other services are provided. Plot area: 1800 acres Syndicates Park: It includes office buildings, headquarters for major corporations and office towers. Plot area: 300 acres

Plot area: 1300 acres Resorts Park: A residential district, providing 7 star hotels and a variety of private houses. Plot area: 1300 acres Leisure Park: This is where the future entertainment park will be located, with state of the art games and a mega size fun fair; a new version of Disney World. Plot area: 1000 acres Fair Park: An area of 800 acres where an exhibition facility will be establishd, intended to become the future extension of the Cairo international Fair.

The Cloud Theme Park Jeddah 2007 Client: Confidential CUBE Consultation Service:
Concept design
Location: Obhor, Jeddah Plot area: 65 acres Budget: $780 millions Joint Experts & Consultants: SAK consulting firm in Jeddah
Concept: A natural cloud passes over the project site, Its projection on the site creates an artificial cloud, With organic form that inspires the Planning and Landscaping of the project … So that its core resembles the anatomy of a living heart, a new heart of ENTERTAINMENT that beats in Jeddah. The Cloud is born to the north of the site… Fueled by the power from the blowing wind, it rises up as it spreads away from its origin… And dynamically weaves itself to enclose the land beneath. The Cloud acts as a social magnet that attracts all family members, allowing them to interact and further bond together, playing in the Theme Park, cruising in a ferry, shopping at the mall, enjoying the fine restaurants and relaxing in the 7 star resort or even flying at a height of in the automated cars. Conveying changing moods…different scenes… Giving it multiple skins and almost a whole new life/feel every day Project sectors as below: 1- Theme Park which is lies at the centre (the Heart) of the project with its organic grooves, enclosed by the Hotel Apartments and the Commercial Floors to the east. The Hotel Apartments capture the view of the park and the sea. 2- To the north of the Theme Park lies a quieter park zone for relaxation. 3- Multi Purpose Halls and the Mosque, marks a rather quiet zone at the tip of the site assigned for The Multi Purpose Halls and the Mosque. 4- At the opposite side lies the 7 star Resort Area which has direct access from King Abdul Aziz road…facing north in the zone of the force (Power of Wind). 5- On a man made island deeper into the sea, and also at the origin of forces there’s the Floating Restaurant with a view of The Cloud from the sea.

Location: Medina Central Area, KSA Plot area: 750 m2 Budget: $400 million Joint Experts & Consultants: Rwnq consulting firm - Riyadh
Concept: Following the Medina Central Area design regulations, we tried to combine the city’s ancient traditional Architecture and its nowadays modernism. This was achieved by using the following features and materials: The hotel’s main gate reaches 70% of building height to give the feeling of dignity like the ancient ones. The windows at the solid upper part of the building are covered with the traditional wooden screens (Mashrabeia). Curtain walls with reflected glass is used in-between the historical elements. The glass has laser cuts of Islamic motives. Soft and hard Marble tiles are used for the facades’ cladding to give the spirit of the surrounding. The Project: The Project consists of 2 basements and 12 stories. The ground floor level and the mezzanine include the hotel’s reception area and its services. The typical floors contain the guest rooms and floor services; each floor has 18 double rooms. The Basement floors contain the hotel’s service rooms and parking lots.

Special Features: Proposed structural system is steel structure for columns, chamber and outside skin. Columns arrangement should be fixed at locations which give more flexibility to the architectural design and leads to a rigid, stable and economical structural design. Arrangement of exterior columns is fixed at such location to avoid any influence of outer exposure and facade requirements. Structural system for slabs will be either hollow core (post – tensioned ) slab system and /or "cast in site" flat slab system according to columns final arrangement, these slab systems give not only the flexibility for architectural design but also minimizes the contradiction with utilities. Facades: Titanium sheets with golden color are used in cladding the main skin facades and also polycarbonate sheets "30% transparency" with the same color. Deep mysteries Triangle Park with lake: its organic nature with industrial lake under the building makes the building seems like it is floating, this triangle is 5m under zero level and the walls are covered with mirrors to give infinite extension for the park and the lake. Shades: steel is used in columns and main framework and it is covered with fabric tents which are near to the African spirit.
Lighting Of The Building: Day time:-"The Triangular Park" is deep and dark due to the wild environment created by heavy planting and shades giving us a mysterious feeling of the hidden African secrets which lies under the building. The building makes advantages of the natural light by three means: o The open courts. o The part of the building under the shades. o The Polycarbonate sheets "30% transparency" can be used as lighting strips on the surface of the building.
Lighting system is used to light "The Triangular Park" it makes the building look like a floating one, giving us a feeling of shine and glow which insure the brightness of the new era & giving hope to everyone who passes by.

Remal Media House Riyadh 2007 Competition – 2nd prize Client: Okaz Press Foundation CUBE Consultation Service:
Concept design Design development
Location: Riyadh Plot area: 50 000 m2 Budget: $1 million
Concept: The goal was to create an iconic building that simulates the outburst in media technologies…yet be inspired by the cultural heritage and nature of the old city of Riyadh, well known for its enormous deserts and dynamic sand dunes. Therefore a process of "numerical simulation" of a desert dune was carried out… during which the effect of King Fahd road was taken into perspective .The road empowers the sand granules with velocity -constituting a TIME vs. SPEED relation- so that they rearrange themselves to reshape the sand dune in a sculptural sense. The design was awarded second prize in the competition for its innovative approach which truly marks the identity of a "Media Center". Its thermodynamic/free form and visually boundless surface

resemble the infinitely evolving media technologies. This freedom in both form and structure is reflected through the spatial hierarchy and flexible zoning of the different sectors of the building. The design provides solutions to ecological issues as well, through the flexible form that reduces energy consumption and the implementation of photovoltaic cells in cladding the tower to provide the building with electric power. At night, the computer-generated surface of the building acts as a giant screen, used to display the latest news or simply give the building multiple faces (representing the fast growing media technologies). While during the day, this place turns into a busy beehive on the inside rather silent and mysterious to the viewing eye.
Project sectors 1- Commercial exhibition spaces are provided at the foot of the building. 2- Publishing offices are beneath the tower together with lecture halls and auditoriums. 3- The tower is constituted of open spaces intended for use as office floors.
