“We must grow revenues in order to succeed in the Pac-12 Conference, PERIOD.” Loyal Buff Supporters, “Are You In?”
I
t is a simple question, and it is the question I have been asking of each and every fan, alumni, donor, student and faculty member since the day I arrived in Boulder this past summer. Are you in?
We are facing a critical juncture in the history of Colorado Athletics. Our financial strains have been well documented. A myriad of factors — some within our control and some beyond — have contributed to our current reality. Yet, as Buffaloes we succeed and fail together — as a herd – and the days of pointing fingers, placing blame, and looking to the past are over. Are you in? We are opening our books, sharing our budget, as you will see in the pages that follow. Because we must all be united, it is essential that you see and understand the challenges that we must surmount. We have fallen behind our peers, and they are not slowing down. We must grow revenues in order to succeed in the Pac-12 Conference, period. Your annual gifts are our lifeblood, the steady drumbeat of our athletic department. You provide the opportunities that are available for these extraordinary young people. You provide the momentum that will allow us to embark on a transformational facilities campaign. You are the key to our future and our mission for sustainable excellence in the Pac-12 Conference and beyond. Are you in? Most of you have been generous Buff Club donors for years – thank you! In the year ahead we are asking all Buffs to give just a little bit more, and you may notice an increase in your ticket related contributions. If you are not currently a donor, join the Buff Club at whatever level you can, and support us as we launch into a new era for Colorado Athletics.
RICK GEORGE, Director of Athletics Buff Club Donor
As you read this, our coaches and student-athletes are committed, working harder than ever to achieve success and make you proud. The time is now. We need you with us. Are you in?

It is the responsibility of University and Athletic Department leadership to immediately begin the work of charting a new financial trajectory. We WILL provide a world-class intercollegiate student-athlete experience.

We WILL compete for championships in the Pac-12 and nationally.
•
We WILL continue to graduate student-athletes that are prepared for success in business and in the community.
We are calling on all Buffs to join us in this mission. Together, we can eliminate our current funding gap and place CU Athletics on a path to sustainable excellence! Revenues

Annual Student-Athlete Expenses Each year the Buff Club strives to not only support growing scholarship costs, but to fund the complete student-athlete experience. Including direct expenses such as travel, academic support and sports medicine, the individual student-athlete investment surpasses $66,000 annually (out-of-state). Clearly, these expenses add up, and our goal is to create a culture of sustainable excellence.
Cali, Colombia
Championships start with scholarships To compete nationally, the University of Colorado must ensure the top in-state student-athletes are choosing to compete for the Buffs, while also attracting the best and brightest from around the country. With scholarship costs rising nationally, it is imperative that the Buff Club increases both memberships and gifts to assist in covering these costs. Consider increasing your gift or referring a friend to the Buff Club today!

I come from a family of five kids, so you can say that getting a scholarship was a top priority. Thanks to your support, I get an opportunity of a lifetime. When you invest in our scholarships, you directly invest in my future. I get a top-notch education that might have otherwise not been afforded. I get to make relationships and memories that will last me a lifetime. I get to represent a university proudly on the court and off it. Not only does your gift bless me, but it allows me to bless others. I am able to give back to the community by going to a children’s hospital or working to help those affected by a flood. Know that you not only enrich my life, but my community, and for that I am truly grateful.

I am so grateful for our donors that have given student athletes like myself the opportunity to perform highly both in the classroom and on the court. It is a honor to be able to represent our university in both of these ways.

WAYS TO GIVE
carrie verdon
Moraga, California
Annual Giving Donors who support the University of Colorado Athletics Department through generous contributions are considered members of the Buff Club. Annual gifts to the Buff Club provide invaluable scholarship and operating resources and immediately impact and enrich the lives of our student-athletes. The cumulative amount given to support the athletics department on an annual basis determines a Buff Club member’s annual giving level. Buff Club membership levels with associated benefits are activated with a minimum gift of $100. Capital Gifts Capital gifts address specific facility needs of the athletics department. Capital gifts are included when determining a Buff Club member’s annual membership level. Endowments Establishing an endowment provides funding for future Colorado student-athletes. Endowments are permanently invested by the University of Colorado Foundation, generating interest that is used for the purpose you choose to support. A portion of the interest income is reinvested in the endowment’s principal each year, enabling it to grow in perpetuity and provide an enduring stream of income for the athletics department. For more information on setting up an endowment with the Buff Club, contact us at (303) 492-2200. Planned Giving A planned gift can pay dividends that leave tomorrow’s University of Colorado Athletics Department a place of sustained competitive excellence, educational opportunities and lasting tradition for student-athletes, coaches and staff.
8 2014 MEMBERSHIP GUIDE
Planned gifts can be made as charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests, life insurance and numerous other tax wise tools.
There is a planned gift to suit every circumstance. Each giving strategy has distinct benefits for you and for the athletics department. The Buff Club can guide you through the available choices and help you increase your legacy.
•
If you pay the full balance of your Benefit Giving and submit a matching gift claim based on that giving, your match will be applied to our Athletics General Scholarship Fund. Your match may not be applied to other benefit giving designations.
For more information on setting up a planned gift with the Buff Club, contact us at (303) 492-2200.
•
Matching gifts will be applied to the original gift designation, unless specified otherwise by your company. The one exception will be if your Benefit Giving match comes back greater than the balance due; in this case the overage will be applied to our Athletics General Scholarship Fund.
•
Football seating and parking donations are due in full by June 30. Basketball seating donations are due in full by September 30. All matching gifts must be received by the respective deadlines. If you have a balance one month prior to a given deadline, you will be invoiced regardless of whether a matching gift claim has been submitted. When considering a matching gift, please familiarize yourself with your company’s matching gift timeline.
•
Matching gifts cannot be directed to future benefit giving. Forthcoming matches from claims submitted prior to the above deadlines, but not fulfilled in time, may be allowed an exception. Please contact the Buff Club to review your options.
MATCHING GIFTS You may be able to double your gift to CU Athletics with a matching gift from your employer! Many companies and subsidiaries have a program that matches gifts made in support of athletic programs at institutions of higher education. However, please be aware that policies vary widely by company and often change from one year to the next. We encourage you to be familiar with your company’s current matching gift policy for giving to athletic programs before you submit a matching gift claim.
What You Need to Know: Assuming your company allows a matching gift to be used toward Benefit Giving, you may use a matching gift to fulfill your seating or parking contribution. •
Due to varying policies, we ask that you plan for only the tax deductible portion of your benefit gift to be matched, or 80% of your original gift. Gifts not tied to a benefit (Excellence Giving) are usually matched at 100%, but please refer to your company’s policy for confirmation.
•
If your company fails to match your Benefit Giving or only matches a portion of it, you are responsible for the remaining balance.
•
If your company does match the gift, but it goes toward a non-athletics designation (i.e. the Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence), you are still responsible for any Benefit Giving balances. Even for non-benefit designations, matches directed to non-athletics designations cannot be applied to your Athletics giving.
Matching Gifts are requested through your company, usually from the Human Resources department. Your company will either have a form for you to complete and submit along with your gift or they will have an online claim submission process. If you use a paper form, please complete and sign your portion of the form and send in with your gift to: Buff Club 369 UCB Boulder, CO 80309

Thanks to you, my teammates and I have received the amazing and irreplaceable gift of experience. Without you, most of us would not have been able to experience college, travel the world, or fulfill our dreams. The past few years have been a tremendous experience. I’ve been through a lot, and I am so happy I’ve had my teammates here to support me. After graduation, I plan to continue my dream of playing football, but I would also like to do what my father does. He helps a lot of non-profit organizations for women and children who are homeless or in need. There are a lot of families out there that are less fortunate than I am. I would like to thank all the donors for their generosity. A lot of us don’t know who you are, but to meet you and know that you give from the kindness of your heart — we really appreciate it. Because of you, I will be graduating in the spring semester. Go Buffs!

FOOTBALL SEATING
Buff Club members are offered the opportunity to purchase football season tickets at Folsom Field. Priority seating sections require a minimum per seat contribution to the Buff Club in order to purchase seats on a season ticket basis. The chart on pg. 15 displays the minimum per seat contribution needed to purchase priority seats. Contributions made for priority seating count toward your total Buff Club annual membership level and earn priority points at the rate of one (1) point per $100. Priority seating contributions do not guarantee seats in a particular section at Folsom Field, but are offered as a guide to illustrate the minimum gift requirement to secure seats if available. All requests for new/additional season tickets and upgraded/improved season ticket locations are determined based on a combination of Buff Club annual giving level and rank as determined by the priority point system. Members of the Buff Club staff and CU Ticket Office are available to personally assist you with selecting a season ticket location that matches your desired level of giving. For an appointment, please call the Buff Club at (303) 492-2200 Away Game & Bowl Game Tickets Buff Club donors receive first priority for away game and bowl game tickets.
Christian Powell Upland, California 14 2014 MEMBERSHIP GUIDE
Demand for some away games will exceed demand for others, thus varying the number of donors able to receive tickets for each game. Away game and bowl game ticket quantities are determined by giving level and assigned to a seat location according to donor rank. The amount of tickets eligible for purchase for each away game is indicated on the season ticket application. Donors who qualify and would like to pre-order away game tickets should do so when renewing season tickets. However, donors may be refunded if the demand for tickets exceeds the supply. JANUARY 21 PRIORITY DEADLINE – Buff Club members who renew or donate to secure season tickets or parking by this date will receive priority consideration for additional season tickets, upgrades, and away game ticket eligibility. Failure to make your priority seating contribution by Jan. 21 may result in delayed receipt of your season ticket renewal application.

national buff club
cabinet
DID YOU KNOW? The National Buff Club Cabinet consists of 159 members spanning 12 states and the District of Columbia.
T
he National Buff Club Cabinet (NBCC) is an exclusive program for CU Athletics’ most generous annual supporters. In appreciation for their impact on our pursuit of athletic and academic excellence, NBCC members are recognized with Silver, Gold, and Director’s Circle memberships. Designed to steward our most valued benefactors, NBCC members receive numerous benefits and event invitations throughout the year. We also convene the NBCC exclusively each year to discuss the current state of our programs and future plans for CU Athletics. Incredibly, members of the National Buff Club Cabinet accounted for 62% of total giving to CU Athletics in 2012-13. Today, we are poised to build upon the collective commitment of this loyal segment of the CU family to achieve our vision of Sustainable Excellence as a model intercollegiate athletics program.
Who are NBCC members? • Alumni
With over 35,000 CU alumni living in the Pac-12 footprint, it is vital that we capitalize on the transition to our new conference and galvanize support of Buffs across the country. With your backing, our ambitious goals are attainable, and we will soon be on the path to unprecedented academic and athletic achievements. This level of annual commitment from National Buff Club Cabinet members helps to fund scholarships, academic support, sports medicine, and other services that directly benefit CU student-athletes, while also funding CU’s margin of excellence through strategic enhancements such as facility improvements and coaches’ salaries. Without the generous support of NBCC members, this simply would not be possible. Consider becoming our newest NBCC member today!

Endowment Giving
D
esigned to establish personal, life-long connections between benefactors and CU student-athletes, the Endowment Donor Program is ideal for donors who value academic achievement and the student-athlete experience as the highest priorities. Endowment giving provides an opportunity to establish a legacy of support for CU Athletics that will survive in perpetuity. Comprised of over 80 funds, CU Athletics’ endowment is currently valued at approximately $13 million. While we are grateful for the contributions of so many loyal endowment donors, this figure is dramatically lower than many of our peers and competitors throughout the Pac12 Conference and the nation. Scholarship endowments allow a donor to establish an endowed fund in support of any CU athletic program. Each year, distributions from these endowed funds are awarded to deserving student-athletes; and through regularly planned events, you will have the opportunity to meet with the recipient of your scholarship award.

Our ultimate goal at the University of Colorado is to build a scholarship endowment large enough to fund the annual cost of each and every scholarship we provide, and we must increase our focus on this vital source of revenue as we strive for Sustainable Excellence. Join us in our pursuit! Contact a member of our development staff today to learn more about establishing a scholarship endowment for CU Athletics.

Frequently Asked Questions Q: Is my contribution to the Buff Club tax deductible?
Q: Can I pay Buff Club donation in installments?
Q: How is my gift to the Buff Club used?
A: You can make monthly payments toward your Buff Club pledge. Equal monthly payments can be charged to your credit card on the 1st of each month. If your donation is tied to athletic benefits of any kind, your balance must be paid in full by June 1. Please contact a Buff Club staff member to discuss payment plan options.
A: Yes, the Internal Revenue Service allows a full deduction on contributions where there is no tangible or intangible benefit to the donor, otherwise an 80% deduction is allowed when the benefit is received. Contact your financial advisor for detailed information.
A: Your gift to the Buff Club is used for student-athlete scholarships, facilities, academic services and general operating budget needs of the athletics department. With over 300 student-athletes on campus, the role the Buff Club plays is essential to the success of the Colorado Buffaloes.
Q: How many members are there in the Buff Club? A: There are currently over 9,000 active Buff Club members.
Q: Who can join the Buff Club? A: All CU fans are encouraged to join the Buff Club.
Q: Can I join the Buff Club if I don’t want season tickets? A: Yes, the Buff Club is Colorado Athletics main source of private support. Being a Buff Club member at any level helps CU Athletics build sustainable excellence in strengthening its athletic programs and helps to drive CU’s stature as an elite national university. A successful athletic program needs funding to provide the resources critical to the success of its student-athletes. Annual gifts to the Buff Club are what make all of this possible.
Q: Does my Buff Club donation qualify me for football and basketball season tickets? A: Your cumulative annual donation amount qualifies you for season tickets in football and men’s/women’s basketball. The total gift amount corresponds to seating locations that you are eligible for based on your annual giving level and availability.
26 2014 MEMBERSHIP GUIDE
Q: What are priority points? A: The Buff Club uses a priority point system to provide a fair and equitable method to reward the generosity and loyalty of supporters to Colorado studentathletes. Priority points help determine athletics benefits such as priority for upgraded season ticket locations and parking, away game tickets and postseason ticket allocation.
Q: Can I transfer priority points, tickets, or parking? A: Tickets can be transferred and the Buff Club would be pleased to discuss this process with you. Unfortunately, priority points and parking cannot be transferred, as these benefits are uniquely associated with each individual donor.
Q: What is the relationship between my annual giving level and priority points? A: All Buff Club members are ranked first by their annual giving level and then by their points. For example: Donor (A) gives $2,500 annually which makes Donor (A) an All-American level donor. Donor (A) has 2,000 priority points. Donor (B) is also an All-American level donor and has 1,000 priority points. Therefore, the ranking of the All-American level would be Donor (A) in position one and donor (B) in position two. Donor (A) would be eligible to select benefits such as tickets and parking before Donor (B) in this example. Further, if Donor (C) has 3,000 priority points but is only giving $1,000 at the Coaches level in a given year, Donor (A) would still select benefits before Donor (C).
