Der Hexenkreis Chapter February 2014

Mortar Board Newsletter

Dear Mortar Board Alumni, I am proud to present the renewal of the Mortar Board Alumni Newsletter! This past semester has been one of tremendous success and progress for Mortar Board Der Hexenkreis Senior Honor Society. The 122nd Tapping Class has carried on a number of recent traditions and expanded to many more. Over the course of the past semester, our Tapping Class hosted the third annual Leadership Reception. We had the opportunity to invite dozens of talented campus leaders from all different aspects of campus for a formal reception to commemorate their achievements. Dean Hubbell was kind enough to give the keynote address regarding his views on the interplay between borne and learnt leadership. We were also fortunate enough to have Rosemary Avery continue the longstanding tradition in giving her “Last Lecture” to an auditorium packed with students. She told a tremendously inspiring story of surviving apartheid and learning to lead and inspire change. One of our major new initiatives that we took on includes reconnecting with many of our alumni. During this past Board of Trustees weekend, the 122s had the opportunity to sit down with councilwoman Alison Dreizen of the Class of 1974. Through the telling of her life story, she inspired us to follow our passions, wherever they may take us in the world. Despite the busy semester we also had some time for Tapping Class fun. From trips to Applefest to our Potluck Holiday dinner or the occasional Wine and Cheese night, we have really made the most of our first semester as seniors. Going into next semester we are looking forward to coming together to select the 123rd Tapping Class of our society. We hope to maintain the three pillars of Scholarship, Leadership and Service while selecting a diverse group of juniors to carry on our legacy. We are always looking to connect with past Mortar Board members so please do not hesitate to reach out to us! Happy New Year! Ad der Hexenkreis, Andrew Freiman, President

Last Lecture Speaker: Rosemary Avery

Rosemary Avery, the Chair of the Policy Analysis and Management department, has received dozens of awards for her teaching and scholarship. During her tenure at Cornell she has received the prestigious Carpenter Award for Advising, a Weiss Presidential Fellowship and the Merrill Presidential Teacher Recognition Award eleven times. Her professional career has focused on child welfare policy as it relates to the impact of public policy on the experience of children in the foster care system. Her work has been published in a number of leading health and public policy journals and she has served as the external evaluator of five federally funded adoption opportunities grants. In addition to her scholarship, Professor Avery has just recently finished her term as a Faculty Trustee on the Cornell University Board of Trustees and continues to serve on several leading university committees. Beyond that, Professor Avery is constantly impacting the lives of Cornell students through her role in leading teams of teaching assistants, research assistants and as the faculty advisor of several clubs, fraternities and athletic teams. She is one of a few Professors that takes the time to learn the names and backgrounds of each student in her 135-person lecture. She is a one of a kind Professor, Advisor and Department Head and truly represents the three pillars of our society: Scholarship, Leadership and Service. She has been tapped as a honorary member.
