DHM DAILY Striving for thriving teams, patients, and institution Clinical operations with a focus on #thriving

As the Omicron surge abates, we have had a moment to reflect. Since the start of the 2022 academic year, we have discharged 9,116 patients, with 17% of those patients diagnosed with COVID. Our team developed clinical care guidelines and pathways, and partnered to build our School of Medicine wide surge plan where every single clinical department participated. Now that is #community! No matter how large the surge got, the Division of Hospital Medicine was ready for the challenge and our Department of Medicine and School of Medicine colleagues were ready and willing to help! Our team is focused on data driven staffing models that drive outcomes – including thriving teams, patients, and institution! Check out our data driven surge efforts using rapid qualitative analysis, experiences of Latinx patients hospitalized with COVID, and disaster planning. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35177114/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33704475/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30261086/

In the News Forbes Article: Getting More Out Of Your Mentoring Relationship “Remember, when your mentees succeed, you succeed. Your way of thinking, the ideas you have helped crystallize, and your legacy grows with those you mentor. The best mentoring relationships are ones where you get as much as you give!” – Vineet Chopra, MD, MSc | Chair of Medicine, CU Anschutz

Advancing our Educational Efforts Forward we go!

While persevering through the adversities that have arisen with COVID, our faculty have been able to push forward to improve our education programs on a daily basis. Dr. Catherine Callister, the DHM Director of Education, is keenly focused on building an incredible experience for our learners despite the pandemic. She is currently leading an effort to build a teaching curriculum for Addiction Medicine. This curriculum will give our residents, advanced practice fellows, medical students and other learners the opportunity to learn the important skill of diagnosing and treating substance dependence.

DHM DAILY Exploring Housing Insecurities for Hospitalized Patients Lack of stable housing adversely affects health outcomes. Few studies have assessed the prevalence of homelessness and housing insecurity in hospitalized patients. To address this gap, the team conducted a hospital point-in-time study to determine the prevalence of housing insecurity and homelessness among hospitalized patients at UCH and Denver Health. A total of 450 patients were screened across both hospitals; 271 consented to participate. 79 patients (29.1%) were experiencing either housing insecurity or homelessness. Demographic information was also collected. The team plans to use this information to advocate for more resources in our community for this vulnerable population. Thank you to everyone involved in this work in collaboration with Metro Denver Homeless Initiative: Ellen Sarcone MD, Julie Knoeckel MD, Sarah Stella MD, Jack Cunningham MD (in conjunction with CU team of Lauren McBeth BA, Erin Bredenberg MD, Gregory Misky MD, Elizabeth Breitbach MD, Amanda Johnson MD and led by Neelam Mistry MD).
