About Beth Gillespie, MD, FACP

Undergraduate Climate and Health Education

This August, we have 4 students joining us. They’re focusing on sleep and wellness within the hospital setting and how they can better the environment for more efficient, and restful sleep for patients.

Anna Ha University of Colorado School of Medicine

Beth recently finished her Climate and health science policy fellowship through CUSOM. As a fellow, Dr. Gillespie had the opportunity to serve as guest researcher with the CDC’s Climate and health program, which expanded her professional network and opened the door to a number of experiences in education, scholarship, and advocacy detailed below. The fellowship also allowed her to focus more time on certain interests she had for years.

Health Innovations Scholar Program (HISP)

As newly-appointed director of undergraduate medical education (UME) within CU’s Climate and Health Program, Dr. Gillespie will continue to advocate for wider dissemination of planetary health curricula for UME. She had the opportunity to write a blog post for EcoAmerica, and worked with other members of the Society of General Internal Medicine’s Environmental Health Interest group (which Dr. Gillespie founded) to deliver two workshops at Society of General Internal Medicine National Meeting in Orlando (4/22): Practical approaches to addressing the educational gap in climate and health (Workshop 1) and The physicians role in clinical practice (Workshop 2). She also is clinical lead for sustainability efforts at Denver Health, playing an active role within Denver Health’s environmental sustainability cohort. She looks forward to her new civic role, having recently (April 2022) been elected to serve on the Science & Research Committee under the Sustainability Advisory Council (SAC) within Denver’s Office of Climate Action Sustainability and Resiliency (CASR). Her recent work and impact has spread across the globe featuring important health education and advocacy/service initiative topics.

The Health Innovations Scholar Program (HISP) is an intensive training program for medical students who seek to lead innovative transformation of American healthcare. Though advances in science, technology, and models of collaboration promise continued discovery and improvement in human health, the care systems designed to bring benefits to patients do not live up to their potential. Medical school typically does not provide the knowledge or skills necessary to drive reinvention of healthcare systems. Using tools from LEAN, design-thinking, and change management, students analyze the existing workflows, identify targets for improvement, and work with stakeholders to enact changes. These projects each lead to meaningful improvements at the University of Colorado, which were presented to high level stakeholders across the respective departments, and sustainable initiatives to improve care delivery!

Neil Chandnani University of Colorado School of Medicine

Our team continues to see increasing growth of our clinical services. While COVID has contributed, we are seeing sicker and more complex patients. We are fortunate to have incredible hospital partners such as our care management teams and hospital and department leadership to support this important mission area. We are also beginning to plan for our new tower.

Collaboration with UCH

For the 11th year in a row, U.S. News and World Report ranks UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, located on the Anschutz Medical Campus, as the No. 1 hospital in the state of Colorado. “While the effects of the pandemic continue to impact hospitals across the country, these rankings are a testament to the dedication and perseverance of UCHealth’s dedicated staff and clinicians in providing the very best care for our patients,” said Elizabeth B. Concordia, UCHealth president and CEO.

Focus on the parts/stages of care for our patients

In academic year 2021 to 2022, we performed more than 1500 procedures and more than 500 ultrasounds. More than 250 procedures were urgent outpatient procedures which may have otherwise required a hospital admission or ED visit. About 10% (~150) were requests for supervision of primary team learners. Looking forward to 2022, we will be working closely with IR to improve patient care and prevent delays. They plan to implement changes to their Order Wizard, automatically encouraging routing of requests to us, and they plan to train us to perform tunneled line removals to help facilitate these often-urgent procedures. We anticipate this will improve outpatient access to care by allowing IR to schedule more outpatient procedures like tunneled lines, ports, and PleurXs.

With a new tower underway, our team is planning ahead for more streamlined processes and anticipating new challenges to come.

Working with care management and social care team

This recent partnership with IR is just one of many signs we are earning folks’ trust and building a positive reputation across the Anschutz Medical Campus. Here’s what we’re working on:

Geographic Cohorting - Making sure we have the right staff located in the same place • Units, services to cohort, better processes • Ensuring teaching services are co-located Planning for the New Tower on the Anschutz Medical Campus

Hospitalist Team is caring for more and more patients!

The CARE clinic aims to improve delivery of cancer care through a proactive and patient-centered approach to complex symptom management and through providing same-day urgent care services tailored to the unique needs of oncology patients. The clinic is staffed by APPs Oncology and Hospital Medicine, representing a first of its kind collaboration between these two divisions. APPs have advanced training in both oncology and internal medicine, which allows patients to receive individualized, patient-centered care.

#CUDHM Service Line Spotlights

We are excited to announce the upcoming launch of a new Med-Peds Consult Service! The overarching goal of the service is to improve the care of the adolescent and young adult population hospitalized at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) and UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (UCH). At UCH, patients under age 18 are admitted with some frequency, as are complex young adult patients with chronic conditions of childhood. For these patients, the Med-Peds Consult Service hopes to provide age and disease-specific recommendations to primary teams and nursing staff, help communicate with outpatient providers and relevant consulting services at CHCO, and facilitate transitions of care.

The service, which will tentatively start on January 3rd, 2023, will be funded by the Medicaid Supplemental Funding Program (UPL) and will be available to consult Monday to Friday during daytime hours. It will be staffed by Med-Peds-trained physicians and will have the ability to consult on both adult patients admitted to CHCO as well as pediatric and young adult patients admitted to UCH during the same business day.

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT 8

New CARE Clinic to Support Oncology Service

Looking at What’s to Come

The CARE (Clinical Assessment and Rapid Evaluation) Clinic at the University of Colorado Cancer Center is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) led clinic that provides intensive symptom-management and urgent care services for solid tumor oncology patients at the University of Colorado Hospital. Oncology patients often experience complex symptoms including pain, fatigue and nausea, often resulting in numerous trips to the emergency department or admissions to the hospital. The goal of the CARE clinic is to provide oncology patients with a cost-effective alternative to the emergency department while undergoing cancer treatment.
