Jocelyn House Word

Welcome to our new Prefect Team! Head of House Rebecca Beardmore Deputy Head of House Libby Tompson

6-7

A Goodbye from Melissa, Head of House Extraordinaire Jocelyn, I cannot believe this year has gone by so quickly, and the U6 have said goodbye to Culford. I think I speak on behalf of the Prefect team in saying that all the Jocelyn girls have been such an integral part of our lives this year and we have enjoyed serving Jocelyn House. I know I have said this before but you have been the largest part of my Culford life, and you have all been responsible for so many of my happy memories.

House Captains

I will miss all of you when I leave and I wish you well in the future.

Eleanor Gillis, Tatiana Ruleva and Harriet Kirby-Smith

I am so sad to be leaving my role as Head of House for Jocelyn as I have loved it so much, every single bit

of it. You girls have made me laugh, cry, challenge myself and helped me grow as a person. My time at Jocelyn has been the best of my life (so far!) It is because of my job as HoH and how much joy it has brought me, that I have decided to pursue International Management at university. I want to thank you, Jocelyn, for making my experience so surreal and so fabulous that it pointed me in the right direction for university.

This quote resonates with me for three reasons. First, you girls should always work towards your dreams and your future. One day you will get there and all that hard work will pay off. Secondly, it reminds me to work with the people around me. Success doesn’t have to be a journey completed alone. Finally, it reminds me of my time here at Culford, working with the school, Prefects and teachers to get where I am today.

I would like to leave you all with a quote by Aubrey Graham who once said:

Thank you fellow Prefects, thank you Jocelyn tutors and thank you girls- it’s been real.

Started from the bottom now we’re here, started from the bottom now my whole team here.

House Prefects Lucy Scott, Ella Dowling, Alex Burge and Sophie Mason. Keep an eye out for our new Prefects poster in September!

Our Head of House for 2016-2017 is Rebecca Beardmore. Fun facts about Becs: She was born in Seattle, Washington in the United States; her favourite food is Cinnabon rolls; she has a thumb that looks like a toe and her favourite thing about Culford is that she gets to live with all her best friends.

Make sure you put dirty crockery into the dishwasher!

Our new Upper Sixth: Magnificent Mentors and Funny Friends

We are lucky to have an amazing, creative, funny, kind and energetic new Upper Sixth year. Pictured to the left are just some of our Upper Sixth- I think you can see that we are going to have a wonderful year!

Jocelyn Talent!

Ophelia Yannaghas – Young Artist… My name is Ophelia Yannaghas (L5) and I am a fifteen year old artist from Culford School. My works are created on an iPad, using the app ‘Paper’ along with a wooden stylus. My designs are turned into Mary Grace Godfrey – Future Political Correspondent? Mary Grace, one of our very talented Lower Fifth Pupils, has just won a national essay competition! The Day news site ran a competition for pupil opinions about the EU Referendum and Mary Page 2

cards and prints alike and sold in various outlets in Suffolk and beyond (at present near 40) including some of my most recent outlets in Kensington and Islington, London. I also offer commissions to order and have previously drawn some famous Culford dogs Grace was chosen as one of the four winners. The Day is circulated to over 1300 schools, and only 4 essays were selected out of over a thousand entries. She has done fabulously well. The winning essays are going to be given to David Cameron - will they sway his opinion?

including Waggy, Charlie and Huwie! My clever brother Henry has recently designed me a website: www.foofsterdesigns.com

Her piece is published on the website here: http://theday.co.uk/ opinion/ student/2016/06/21/brexit -would-allow-a-morepersonal-approach

Some Changes to Jocelyn House There will be many changes to Jocelyn House before the new year starts in September. There will be new carpets in the Common Room; new sofas and tables and chairs; an internet cafĂŠ and social area outside the kitchen; new books and films for us to enjoy; the curtains the pupils have selected in the common areas; bean bags to lounge in; an enthusiastic new Prefect Team and many new lovely ladies of Jocelyn for us to get to know. Some changes will be bittersweet. I know that a few of you will miss the sofas in the Common Room for example. We will certainly all miss those ladies leaving us for new adventures, and the challenges of moving on to the next year of studies can be nerve-racking. One change that will be especially bittersweet is that Anita, our wonderful afternoon Matron, has decided that the time has come to move on from Jocelyn House. As many of you know, she is a qualified Art Therapist and will be focusing on her practice again. Anita has been a wonderful matron, always kind and compassionate and willing to go above and beyond. I know that many of you will miss her.

Joining us in September will be two new members of staff. Miss Williams joins Culford as an English teacher and Jocelyn Tutor. She has been living in Singapore until recently, and is looking forward to some cool English summers. Also joining is in September is Mrs Lynda Minnis, who will be replacing Anita as afternoon matron. Lynda is from Ireland and has worked in boarding for many years in various posts. She is very excited to be joining Jocelyn House and we are all very excited to make her welcome and get to know her.

Hello! My name is Lynda, and I am going to be your new afternoon matron. I have lived in Bury St Edmunds since 2002 but originally come from Belfast in Northern Ireland. I am really looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know each of you. Have a great summer and see you in September.

A special goodbye from Anita Dear ladies of Jocelyn , I just wanted to let you all know that I will be leaving at the end of this term. As many of you know I am studying to become a Jungian Analytical Psychologist which takes many years. My training takes me frequently to London and Cambridge with lots of lectures and reading and client hours.

Jocelyn really is the best house at Culford (but then you already knew that) and I am so glad to have been with you all for a while - surprisingly I won't miss end of term travel !!!

I have therefore decided to return to working as an Art Therapist whilst I continue with my training. In any spare time left over I will be found gardening , looking after my chickens, dog walking and painting...

Anita

Lots of Love,

Current Events! An overview of Brexit As many of you will already know, the UK has voted in favour of Brexit in a close vote of 52% YES to 48% NO. The Brexit campaign emphasised cuts in migration, making Britain “great” again (independent), moving away from the “Brussels bureaucracy”, an anti-establishment movement, and lower prices on everyday goods. The remain campaign argued strongly against this, protesting that Brexit used false figures and showed their supporters that remaining was more secure, safe and smart. However, both sides were using false figures to tip the scales in their favour, for example, the £350million we lose to the EU a week. Since the vote, we have seen the quickest drop in the value of the pound since 1985 and our exchange rates have seen better days. However, slowly the markets have steadied and levelled out as countries and businesses wait in anticipation for what’s next. What is next? Well, as of yet we are still very much in the EU, and will be until we break Article 50, at which point we will enter the 2 year negotiation period before our exit, so nothing has changed yet as far as our relations with Europe stand. The major problems we face currently are David Cameron’s resignation and the vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn. This is a tumultuous and uncertain time in politics and has the potential to cause more problems for us than our exit. Page 4

However, our exit has provoked governments in other countries to think about their own relations with Europe. Could it all fall apart now? Well, the Front Nationale in France is pushing for an exit as well as the Netherlands and Hungary, to name a few. People who do want to keep the EU are fighting against this decision and aiming for a recall of the verdict. A petition has been circling social media, however the government will not consider this when it comes to decision making (as many who have signed are under legal voting age). Scotland and Northern Ireland however, are considering another referendum for independence as both voted heavily to remain in the EU and do not want to be held by the shackles of England. I have done my best to remain impartial in this summary, as I understand that everyone is entitled to their own views and thoughts. Therefore I have presented the facts of the aftermath using an impartial government counsel document and BBC as sources. Congrats to any victorious leave voters, and to the Remainers all I can say is that it isn’t the end of the world, so make the best of it. By Lucy Scott (L6)

New to the Newsletter– Agony Aunt Dear Agony Aunt, I'm going to a party next week and I'm worried about how much alcohol I will drink. I’ve never really been a drinker, how do I know when I've had enough? Thank you, Would Rather Have Soda

Dear Would Rather Have Soda, Never give into peer pressure. If your friends are truly your friends they shouldn’t encourage you to do something you don’t want to do. It may seem like the biggest deal when you are there but afterwards you will not regret making the decision yourself.

If you have a question for the Agony Aunt, just write it down, put it in a sealed envelope and submit it to Becs for the next Newsletter.

Dear Agony Aunt, All the girls in my year are really skinny and I’m not. The gym is full of boys and so when I go I feel embarrassed and insecure. Then I feel guilty for not exercising and so I avoid eating instead. What do you think I should do? Thank you, Feeling Low

Dear Feeling Low, Throw yourself into as much sport as you can! Not eating is not a healthy way to lose weight. If you are really worried, there is actually a Healthy Weight Programme at Culford that you can take part in. The best part of this programme is that Mrs Schofield, who is a personal trainer, meets you in the gym once a week and gives you specific workout routines. She talks to you about nutrition and healthy routines and keeps you on track. It’s pretty great! You should also remember that every girl is beautiful - stop comparing yourself to others! Confidence and a smile are all you need to be stunning.
