To many, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was as devastating if not more so than the disaster itself. It was not only the lack of preparation or assistance that was the issue, but the apparent inability to make things better in the time that followed. Situations that should have been handled in minutes were delayed hours if not days. Those that should have taken days were delayed to weeks and months. Among the worst are those that still have not been addressed--more than three years later. August 29th, 2005 was a day that would forever change directly the lives of a million people. It would also change the percetions of countless others. What follows is a compilation of facts compiled on December 5th, 2006. While the document is outdated now, to truly understand the depth of our lack of preparation, one needs to remember that this document was compiled more than fifteen months aftre the storm. It should also be noted that variations on these units could also provide services other than residence.

Biological Aspects In the Clivus system, the breakdown of waste is carried out by organisms that thrive within a temperature range of 20-45 °C. Chief among these are a wide range of bacteria and fungi. Also highly active within the compost system are many invertebrates, such as red worms that transport oxygen and moisture throughout the compost mass while they assist the physical and chemical breakdown. Bulking material (typically, pine shavings or shredded bark mulch) is added to help maintain a porous texture that promotes aeration and good moisture content. Human pathogens are killed not by the heat within the composter but by predatory organisms and the long retention time in the system. Especially important in the composting process are the nitrifying bacteria (e.g., nitrobacter and nitrosomonas) which turn the nitrogen in human waste into nitrites and nitrates—forms of nitrogen plants need for growth. Chemical Aspects One of the most important processes taking place within the compost system is the chemical transformation of the nitrogen in human waste. Most of the nitrogen is contained in urine in the form of urea. In the composter, urea is readily broken down into ammonia and carbon dioxide by a variety of bacteria and fungi. As it passes through the compost mass, nearly all of Composting Toilet Process the ammonia is converted, first to nitrites, and then to nitrates by nitrifying bacteria. Two other macro plant nutrients, phosphorous and potassium, along with a wide range of micro-nutrients, are also present in human waste in useful quantities and are captured by the composting process. Separated from the solid matter by the composter design, the compost liquid that results is a stable, high-strength fertilizer. Fecal matter in the compost system is reduced in volume by more than 90%, and breaks down over time. When fully composted, this material looks and smells like topsoil, and is an organically rich soil amendment. Greywater System Process Since greywater—water from sinks, showers, and washing machines—contains only about 10% as much nitrogen as does human waste, it’s far less of a pollution problem. When greywater is put into the aerobic environment of topsoil soon after it has been collected, plants and soil organisms use the nutrients it contains. The nitrogen in greywater is first converted into ammonia by aerobic organisms in the water. Once the greywater is put into topsoil, soil organisms quickly convert the ammonia to nitrate which can then be used by plants. Conclusion By use of the processes described above, the composting toilet and greywater irrigation technologies have the following benefits:

The foam-flush toilet looks and functions much like a conventional toilet fixture. It uses a mixture of bio-compatible soap and water to carry toilet waste to the composting system below via a conventional 4” drain line. Each flush uses only about 3 oz. of water, making it fully compatible with the composting process. Since the foam-flush fixture is using water to carry the waste, it is possible to have it slightly offset from the compost system. Our foam-flush toilet is currently being used in commercial buildings, rest areas, golf courses, and residences.

Ideal for Irrigation and Fertilization Because of the low level of nutrients it contains compared with total wastewater, greywater (water from sinks, showers, laundry, dishwashers) is ideal for irrigation and fertilization of land plants such as turf, trees, and ornamentals. The Clivus Greywater System consists of a dosing basin and irrigation chambers. Greywater flows to the dosing basin, where it is collected and stored for not more than a day. A level switch activates the dosing basin’s effluent pump or gravity siphon (where sufficient slope is available), and greywater is moved to the irrigation chambers. The irrigation chamber is a half-round pipe of 8-12” in diameter, placed within the root zone. The number of irrigation chambers and their lengths are determined by greywater volume, soil characteristics, and site design. Because of the high level of soil activity in the root zone, no filtration is necessary before the greywater enters the chambers. All Clivus Greywater systems are custom-designed based on site conditions.

ADVANTAGES OF RADIANT HEAT Studies conducted by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) indicate that with radiant heating systems people can be comfortable at temperatures 6°F to 8°F lower than with convective systems. Forced-air and baseboard (whether electric or hot-water) heating systems are convective systems because they use air as the primary heat-transfer medium. Typically, heating outlets or baseboards are placed on outside walls, and the system is designed to fill the area with warm air until the preset temperature on the thermostat is reached. The warm air rises to the ceiling until it cools, falling to the floor for return to the furnace or to fill the convective vacuum created by a baseboard heater. Air stratification and heat loss to the ceiling are significant with convective heat. Air is transparent to the transfer of radiant energy, which occurs directly from warmer to cooler objects. With radiant ceiling heat, the temperature varies only about 2°F to 4°F between the ceiling and the floor, with the floor being about 2°F warmer than the air. And radiant floor heating results in reverse stratification. Humidification is unnecessary with a radiant system because radiant heat does not alter residential air moisture content, which is generally adequate if the air isn’t dried out by combustion or by increased infiltration of cold, dry outside air. Glass, particularly low-e glass, reflects long-wave radiance produced by residential radiant systems. This greenhouse effect serves to contain radiant energy within the heated building cavity, reducing heat loss. Air-infiltration heat loss is reduced with radiant heat. Air infiltration and exfiltration increase as the difference between inside and outside temperature (ΔT) becomes larger. When superheated air from a furnace or baseboard heater flows against relatively cold exterior walls, the increased temperature differential results in a stack effect that draws cold air into the house through any cracks. With radiant systems, the air is only warmed to the temperature of the thermostat setting (which is usually lower to start with), so the temperature differential at the outside wall is less, thereby reducing air infiltration. When applied to the sizing of a radiant system, conventional heat-loss analysis often includes a reduction in design temperature from 70°F to 65°F and a 10% to 25% reduction in building air infiltration, exfiltration, stratification and glass heat loss. The average 65°F radiant comfort temperature with 59°F day/night setback should reduce building heat load by 25% to 35% over convective systems.

There are many ways to take advantage of the benefits of radiant heating and cooling. Some heating system concepts are at least 100 years old. They are familiar and well accepted. Other systems are newer and more innovative. We urge you to at least take a look at these modern systems. The newer and more innovative systems can offer significant advantages in terms of price, energy efficiency, environmental sensitivity and simplicity. Some can be readily converted to alternative energy sources such as solar, where the older ones cannot. The decision about which system to go with is a personal one. You must consider budget, architecture, your comfort level with innovation and the dictates of your local building codes. Radiantec offers several kinds of systems. GLOSSARY AND TERMINOLOGY SECTION – If you see words and expressions that you are not familiar with, just consult this section. Understanding the meaning of the following phrases will make it easier to understand your heating system options. BOILER A boiler is a heating device that is engineered to make very hot water (up to 250 degrees F, under pressure) for radiators and baseboards. Many boilers do not work well at lower temperatures and may need expensive controls to make the adjustment. DOMESTIC HOT WATER HEATER A domestic water heater is engineered to make moderate temperature water. A storage tank is often provided, and additional precautions are taken to prevent corrosion. There is a potential for higher efficiency with a hot water heater because of lower operating temperature and lower exhaust gas temperature, but many low end water heaters do not take advantage of this potential. HEAT EXCHANGER A heat exchanger is a device that exchanges the heat from one fluid to another without a mixing of the fluids. A typical use would be to keep the potable domestic hot water separate from the boiler fluid. CLOSED SYSTEM A closed heating system is one which is closed off from the environment and its heating fluid is not changed except for maintenance. OPEN SYSTEM An open system is one that is open to the atmosphere or one in which the heating fluid is replaced often. A domestic hot water heater is an open system because the heated fluid is constantly changed. Open systems require different mechanicals and materials. POTABLE Potable means fit to drink. DIRECT SYSTEM A direct system is one in which the potable hot water in the water heater is used for space heating and domestic hot water for doing dishes, laundry, taking showers, etc. There is no separation between the two. INDIRECT SYSTEM An indirect system is one in which the heat from the heating unit passes through a heat exchanger before it goes to the in floor tubes.

The following is a brief synopsis of Global Water’s proposal for providing potable water for various size villages and various levels of water purification production. The objective is to provide equipment that can be easily transported either motorized or by hand to remote and mountainous regions. The water sources are fresh water from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, wells, or semi-municipal types of systems.

Background There are many instances of sewage ponding in Aboriginal settlements due to the inappropriate design of septic tanks and their associated leach drains. Over the past 10 years, in an attempt to alleviate this problem, reticulated sewer to lagoon systems have been installed as the funds become available. However these systems are not water wise and are expensive to install and maintain. Up to 85% of the cost involved can be in capital and maintenance costs associated with the pipes and pumps required to transport sewage to the treatment plant (Newman & Mouritz 1996). The potential to reuse treated effluent is limited as it is concentrated in one area. Evapotranspiration systems offer an alternative to the above two approaches to domestic wastewater treatment. By using evapotranspiration trenches wastewater effluent can be reused for revegetation and food production, this allows for a holistic approach to service delivery in remote aboriginal communities. Evapotranspiration Systems Evapotranspiration systems can be designed for disposal of blackwater (domestic wastewater originating from the toilet and other sources) or greywater (domestic wastewater originating from the bathroom and laundry). For systems designed for blackwater the water must first pass through two septic tanks before passing into the evapotranspiration trench. The evapotranspiration trench is then used instead of a leach drain, with the added advantage that the water is used for growing trees.

Figure 1 shows a cross section of an evapotranspiration trench. A trench is dug and then lined with geotextile fabric, to prevent roots from the trees from clogging the pipes. A perforated pipe is layed along the length of the trench, then the trench is back filled with 15-50mm aggregate and then screened river sand is placed on top. This particular trench has been designed to cope with the large population fluctuations found in many aboriginal communities. The sloping walls of the trench mean that at times of low water use (when only small numbers of people are residing in the community or house) water will still reach the root level of the plants so they will still receive sufficient water. While, in times of high water use the trench is prevented from overflowing by the ever increasing volume of permeable aggregate and sand found at each successive level. It is also possible to interconnect the trenches of several houses or connect overflow to sewer (if present) in the event of extreme overcrowding in one of the houses as is the tendency in many communities for brief periods each year.
