Lincoln Hay Day is a new collaboration between cultural solutions UK and the world-renowned Telegraph Hay Festival. Writers who have or are taking part in the Hay Festival are travelling to Lincoln to take part in our 12-hour feast of words. The day is part of the regional Igniting Ambition Lincolnshire Showcase 2011 Cultural Olympiad programme.
Taking Slang Seriously - Jonathon Green 10.15am – 11am / £4 / £2
Slang is the speech of the street and since its earliest appearance it’s been linked with those on the margins of society. Jonathon Green is the English-speaking world’s leading expert on slang. His dictionaries have been critically-acclaimed bestsellers. He has written widely on the history of slang and has presented TV and radio documentaries about it. Spills and Spin: The Inside Story of BP - 11.15pm – 12 noon / £4 / £2
Former oil broker Tom Bergin has been following BP’s fortunes for almost two decades and covered the 2010 spill as it unfolded. His unique access to key players within BP - including former CEO Tony Hayward - has enabled him to tell the story of a corporation in crisis in his book Spills and Spin, which is out in July. Tom will be introduced by Maggie Hanbury, who founded the Hanbury Agency in 1983. The literary agency has several high profile clients, including historians, writers on current affairs and several best-selling authors.
Simon Napier-Bell - A Life in Music - 12.15pm – 1.15pm / £5 / £3 Simon Napier-Bell is a legendary music manager whose acts have included The Yardbirds, Wham!, Japan and Marc Bolan. He co-wrote Dusty Springfield’s classic hit You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me.
He is the author of entertaining and anarchic books about the music business including White Powder, described by Julie Burchill as ‘The greatest book ever written about English pop’, and I’m Coming to Take You to Lunch, the extraordinary story of how Simon took Wham! to China, the first western band to ever be allowed in. Simon is travelling from his home in Thailand to be part of Lincoln Hay Day and will be interviewed by Alex Lewczuk of Siren FM. Simon will be signing books after the event

In June 1943 James Eric Swift, a pilot with 83 Squadron of the RAF, boarded his Lancaster bomber for a night raid on Munster and disappeared. Researching his grandfather’s life, Daniel Swift became drawn to the link between air warfare and poetry, which he explores in his intriguing book that’s part memoir, part a study of the poetry of the Second World War. Daniel will be signing books after the event
Bob Dylan Thomas - 3.30pm – 5pm / £5 / £3
Bob Dylan is 70 on May 24. Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman, he was a big admirer of the work of poet Dylan Thomas and chose a stage name that combined his name with that of his hero. Today, in a birthday tribute, four world experts on the two Dylans consider their work. Critic, writer and broadcaster Michael Gray is a world authority on Bob Dylan and is an expert on rock’n’roll history. His vast Bob Dylan Encylopedia won the CB Oldman prize for an outstanding work of reference and research. David Boucher, the author of Dylan and Cohen: The Poets of Rock’n’Roll recently gave a paper at the Seven Ages of Dylan conference entitled What’s in a Name? about the links between Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas. Biographer Andrew Lycett’s book Dylan Thomas: A New Life brings invaluable insight into the poet’s youthful work and unearths fascinating details about his stormy marriage to Caitlin and his many affairs. Actor, writer and director Steven Berkoff will tonight share with us his six favourite books. Steven’s cinema and stage work has seen him appear in more than 50 films ranging from A Clockwork Orange to the Bond film Octopussy, Beverly Hills Cop, Rambo and The Krays. His writing includes the play Decadence and he has adapted works, including Kafka’s The Trial and Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, which have been performed across the globe. Steven will be interviewed by Alex Lewczuk of Siren FM. Steven will be signing books after the event.

Her elevation to the post of Poet Laureate delighted her many admirers, who include leading critics and academics. Her work deals with subjects as diverse as David Beckham’s Achilles tendon, volcanoes, ash clouds and the magic of childhood. Tonight she is joined by multi-instrumentalist John Sampson who will entertain with a light-hearted programme of music played on unusual period instruments including the crumhorn (on which he’s a real virtuoso) and the Chinese silken gourd.
