It seems just a moment ago that we were thanking art expert Anthony Slinn for the final talk at Wolds Words 2010 – and now we’re back again in 2011 with another packed programme that’s guaranteed to tempt you to spend time with us enjoying all the delights on offer.

Eleven years is a long time to sustain an annual festival and we are pleased to once again be working with so many committed people from across East Lindsey to make Wolds Words happen. Without wishing to harp on about it these are tough economic times for us all, so we’ve worked hard this year to keep ticket prices affordable. Many events are free – and we’ve even brought in top financial experts Ray Boulger and Nick Louth to offer you advice on money matters. We are thrilled to be able to bring Penguin Cafe, the successors to the legendary Penguin Cafe Orchestra, to the Riverhead Theatre in Louth. Book early for this one as we expect music lovers from across the region to descend on us for the show. Lovers of A.A. Milne and Winnie the Pooh mustn’t miss David Benedictus at Louth Library. There’s a whole day of Rural Reflections focusing on Lincolnshire, its history and its people. Get tips at our writing workshops or bring the family along to enjoy a performance of Thumbelina or to join in with workshops based on The Wizard of Oz.

I’d like to offer you a very warm welcome to one of our area’s most important festivals – Wolds Words. Wolds Words is a festival of reading, writing and performance and it’s our aim to offer those who live locally and those who travel from afar to join us the chance to enjoy events that reflect the charm and beauty of Louth, Alford and the surrounding villages and towns in one of the most beautiful parts of Lincolnshire. East Lindsey District Council is working hard to produce festivals that bring local people together and also support the business community. As well as Wolds Words, we also produce SO Festival (www.sofestival.org) in Skegness. East Lindsey is fast gaining a reputation as one of the leading Districts in the region for festivals and events and we must ensure this continues well into the future. Over the past decade Wolds Words has experienced some very special moments and attracted writers and performers of the highest calibre from across the globe. As you read through this brochure you will discover that, yet again, the programme is an exciting mixture of well-known names, up and coming authors, workshop sessions and much, much more. Wolds Words has its own distinctive feel and we are pleased that so many from the local community get involved in it. Volunteers, children and young people, local businesses and community groups all take part, making it truly special.
Local favourites Far Welter’d return with a whole day of competitions and performances. TV gardening expert Alys Fowler shares her tips on creating An Edible Garden and there’s the final chance to visit Lyric Lounge Lincolnshire when it transforms Alford Manor House into a stunning venue for a spoken word extravaganza.
East Lindsey District Council is very proud of what Wolds Words is achieving for our residents and of the part it plays in our wider cultural tourism plans. We are delighted to be once again working in partnership with Lincolnshire-based arts organisation cultural solutions to produce the festival.
We could go on. It’s big, it’s fun, it’s happening at a venue near you - but only for five very special days. We made lots of friends in the area last year and we hope to make even more this year. See you at Wolds Words 2011!

Welcome to the Wolds Words Festival
One of the key elements of the Wolds Words festival is the work we do with children and young people at their schools through our education and outreach programme – and once again there’s an exciting programme on offer. It begins at the end of September when Joel Stickley, the Lincolnshire Poet Laureate, will be attending the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Awards in Horncastle. Joel will also be working in schools throughout the festival period, so make the most of the chance to brush up on your poetry skills. Once again we will welcome back Lincolnshire author Georgia Twynham to work with us. Georgia has just been appointed as an ambassador for the Variety Club, the charity which provides specialist Sunshine Coaches, electric wheelchairs and other practical equipment to give disabled and disadvantaged children and young people the independence and freedom to maximise their potential. Her first book The Thirteenth has just won the Lincolnshire Young People's Book Award 12-14 category. Football fanatic and author Tom Palmer joins us on Saturday 22 October for a football reading game which involves a quiz and penalty shoot out. Come and cheer on your school as it competes for the trophy. Wordsmith John Hegley will also take part in the education programme on Friday following his Thursday evening show. And local young people will be working hard creating new works in the run-up to the final Lyric Lounge Lincolnshire event at Alford Manor House on Saturday 22 October.

What is the enduring allure of historical fiction? This panel discussion features three experts in the genre. Rory Clements won the CWA Ellis Peters Prize for Historical Fiction last year for Revenger. His latest novel, Prince, is set in Elizabethan England. He is joined by journalist turned author Jane Sanderson, whose novel Netherwood is an upstairs, downstairs story set in a magnificent house. The discussion is chaired by Lincolnshire’s Karen Maitland, whose medieval thrillers include Company of Liars and The Gallows’ Curse.

If you want to know what it was really like to be a policeman in a large workingclass area of Sheffield during the 1960s and 1970s then Martyn Johnson’s memories give a superb insight into the twilight era of the ‘beat bobby’. There’s colourful characters, lovable (and not so lovable) rogues and a rich variety of true incidents and events involving amazing traffic accidents, impromptu fights, a dreadful house fire, a dead horse that moved, a lost peacock and even UFOs.

7.30pm | Arthur Jeffes In Conversation followed by Penguin Café In Concert Back in the 1970s a musician called Simon Jeffes was in France suffering from dreadful food poisoning. He had a strange dream about a bleak world where everyone lived in stark, concrete blocks. The only antidote to the misery was a ramshackle building in the distance which housed the mythical Penguin Café. And that’s where a unique kind of music could be heard. Jeffes and the Penguin Café Orchestra created music which failed to fall in to any recognised category but that was so distinctive it is beloved of fans and advert and film makers. Sadly Jeffes died in 1997 and the Orchestra eventually fell silent – but now his son Arthur has assembled a talented group of musicians to recreate those sounds. We are honoured to have the new incarnation Penguin Café with us offering the chance to hear the classic sounds together with some new compositions.

By the end of the 12th century there were more than 100 monasteries, nunneries and friaries established in Lincolnshire. Their effect upon the landscape and the economy must have been immense, yet between 1536 and 1539 all were closed and most demolished. Jenny Walton: Just Jane - Two Farmers and a Lancaster 10.30am-11.15am Jenny will tell the story of the Lancaster Bomber and its place in the air offensives of the Second World War and how Just Jane was acquired by Lincolnshire farmers Fred and Harold Panton. The brothers have lovingly restored Just Jane to pristine condition as a salute to the men and women of Bomber Command, living and dead, who gave so much in the cause of freedom. One of those who died was their brother, Chris.
Kathryn Ferry: Billy Butlin’s Holiday Village by the Sea 1pm-2.30pm
In its 75th anniversary year, author Kathryn Ferry takes a look at the great British institution that is Butlins, exploring the glamorous early years of the first camp at Skegness and its place in holiday camp history. Kathryn has published work on various aspects of seaside culture and regularly contributes to TV and radio programmes as the nation’s beach hut expert.
Ralph Needham: Conscience Hill 3pm-3.45pm
Conscience Hill is Ralph Needham’s candid account of growing up during the Second World War in east Lincolnshire. Ralph recalls the many colourful characters he met delivering pedigree cattle to farms around the country and about illustrious members of the Scrope family who owned the Cockington estate for 355 years. Ralph will also reveal why his book is called Conscience Hill.
Roger Steele: Getting the Waddington Air Show Off the Ground 4pm-5pm Roger became the flying display co-ordinator at Waddington Air Show after serving for 26 years as an air traffic controller in the RAF. He dealt with requests for displays and fly-pasts by The Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Singleton aircraft. Roger shares stories of the months of work it takes to get ready for one of Britain’s biggest air shows, which brings thousands of visitors to Lincolnshire each year.
Join Winnie-the-Pooh expert David Benedictus for a very special event inspired by the first Winnie-the-Pooh sequel, Return to the Hundred Acre Wood. David will talk about his love of A.A. Milne and why, with the blessing of the author’s family, he wrote a sequel to some of the bestloved children’s stories of all time. He will read from Return to the Hundred Acre Wood which features Pooh, Eeyore and all your favourite characters plus Lottie the Otter, a new addition.

The Lincoln Mystery Plays have their origins in medieval times. They were a significant dimension of the religious and communal culture of Lincolnshire life. However, the popularity of the plays soon prompted outdoor performances in the market square and led to the eventual involvement of the local craft guilds.

Lincoln’s unique set of 42 plays, known as The N Town Cycle, have been performed regularly since 1969. From Guyana to the shores of England, Grace and John have provided the world with an honest and poetical insight into the beauty and struggles of their beloved country. Grace’s first poetry collection, I is a Long-Memoried Woman, was published in 1983 and won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize. John is a playwright, poet, short-story and children’s writer. The Young Inferno (2008), a poetic reworking of Dante’s Inferno for young people, won the 2009 CLPE Poetry Award. Grace and John have over the past four decades produced a body of work to be in awe of. Tonight will be a special night – book early so you don’t miss out.

The panel is chaired by former Lincolnshire Echo journalist Sarah Holt, who now works for a leading in-flight travel magazine.
Probably best known for her appearances on the BBC’s Gardeners’ World and for her regular ‘Ask Alys’ column in the Guardian on Saturdays, Alys Fowler knows how to have her garden and eat it. Champion of a no-rules, informal type of gardening, her latest book The Edible Garden tells you how to create an earthly, and tasty, paradise. Tonight she’ll be sharing wisdom from the book and giving you plenty of tips to make your garden grow.

The Wizard of Oz: Storybook Days Lincolnshire author Georgia Tywnham, who is taking part in our education and outreach programme, was recently appointed as an ambassador for the Variety Club children’s charity. One of her first duties is to help promote Sunshine Week in September, which aims to encourage schools to raise funds to help to provide specialist Sunshine Coaches and other practical equipment to help give disabled and disadvantage children and young people the independence and freedom to maximise their potential.

Come be a part of this workshop based on the adventures of a girl named Dorothy in the Land of Oz. Thanks in part to the 1939 film, L. Frank Baum’s tale is one of the best-known stories in American literature. Activities will involve drama, craft (including making your own Scarecrow puppet and a Tin Man hat) and developing a drama about what happened to the Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow when Dorothy went home.
