A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT 2013 was HUGE. The Fall season brought the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts and we have since welcomed and bid farewell to the Rubber Duck Project, now floating south with plans to roost temporarily in Virginia. The Trust’s Highmark First Night Pittsburgh was one of our best ever, with highlights such as an amazing ice labyrinth marking the 20th anniversary of the event. We are currently coming to the close of a tremendous PNC Broadway Across America season. One wonderful show remaining this season is Peter & The Starcatcher, opening on May 20. You don’t want to miss it. This spring we are moving our annual EQT Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival to the Cultural District. Festival activities begin May 14. With the summer season approaching, we also look forward to welcoming you to the District for the Cultural Trust’s annual Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, and the Trust’s Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival and other Trust activities. Thank you for your support!

All are jumping for joy as the 28th EQT Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival moves downtown to Pittsburgh’s vivacious Cultural District this year! Programmed by the Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the Festival seeks to inspire, educate and awaken a child’s enthusiasm for theater, as well as a respect for cultural diversity and mediums of expression. Exposure to artistic programming for our area’s youth remains a priority which can jumpstart a lifelong appreciation for the arts. The Festival’s inaugural year in the Cultural District will feature live performances from Spain, Israel, Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and the United States at venues including the Byham Theater, Cabaret at Theater Square, Trust Arts Education Center, August Wilson Center, and Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts Public School. • Invisi’BALL by Nadine Animato Theater Dance Company (Israel) This U.S. premiere features a liveaction soccer game which transforms the theater into a stadium. • Pinocchio by Theatre Tout À Trac (Canada) – The classic story of a boy born as a puppet and brought to life by a wish who discovers the meaning of growing up through a thousand trials. • Little Steps by Teater My (Denmark) – A story of a small child in a big world. • Animals by El Retablo (Spain) - An array of animals come to life, made of recycled materials and everyday objects. • Hands Up by Lejo (Netherlands) A cast of thousands in Lejo’s worldfamous hands, proving less can be more. • Tales of Folklore and Fantasy by Temujin the Storyteller (USA) - Gathering the crowd with the

sounds of an African talking drum, Temujin creates a storytelling journey around the world. • Midnight Radio Jr. – Underwater Voyage by Bricolage Production Company (Pittsburgh) – A comedy/variety show in the style of a 1940’s radio broadcast about a magical undersea world. The Festival’s commitment to sensory-friendly events include the colorful, lighted inflatable walkthrough luminarium Miracoco (Architects of Air, United Kingdom) and all performances of Little Steps. The new Festival grounds footprint will offer galleries, pop-up green outdoor spaces and unique food options. LilyPad Park on 8th Street at Penn Avenue will feature a free outdoor community stage programmed with culturally-inspired acts, music magic and storytelling by regional artists. Roving artists and over 30 hands-on educational activities will enhance the Festival’s free offerings. Leapfrogging throughout the Cultural District will be simple with way-finding signage and crossing guards to help families navigate the exciting new festival grounds. Visit TrustArts.org/ pghkids for more information.

EDUCATION CORNER A critical element of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s service to the community and desire to provide quality arts experiences for children in our region, the Trust’s Education and Community Engagement Department offers some of the most comprehensive and diverse programming in the nation for young artists and audiences. During the months of February and April, the Trust’s Education Department hosts two theatrical programs for students. The Theater Arts Workshops and Camp Broadway immersive experience programs engage students from all skill levels, providng them valuable theater experiences in addition to the development of confidence, character, and presentation skills. In February, over 400 middle and high school students from Allegeny County and surrounding areas filled the Byham Theater lobby, auditorium and dressing rooms for the annual Theater Arts Workshops. Students work with theater professionals during interactive seminars regarding lighting, sound, stage combat, costuming, makeup, playwriting, dramatic presentations and more. These seminars assist in the exploration of future career options and prepare students to work on theater productions in their own schools. The 2nd annual Camp Broadway in April engages children ages 10-13 in a one-day musical theater workshop with New York-based Broadway professionals. Instructors provide helpful insight regarding dance and voice techniques, choreography and blocking, technical rehearsals and staging a performance from beginning to end. The day culminates in a special ensemble performance for family and friends. Seeking to develop the students’ performance abilities, increase self-esteem, and encourage creativity truly helps enhance one’s appreciation for the arts and develop useful life skills at a young age.
