LET'S TALK EDUCATION

Lets talk

EDUCATION WE SPEAK TO EVO EDUCATOR AND SALON OWNER NATALIE MCLEAVY, ABOUT CREATIVITY WITHIN EDUCATION, AND HER HERO PRODUCTS WHEN IT COMES TO COLOURING

Where does your passion for hair stem from? I think my passion for hair stems from my love of design, creativity and how happy it makes me to help people feel amazing. Why did you choose education? I didn’t choose education. Education chose me. Haha. Jokes. It felt like a natural progression in my career. Istarted my salon from a very young age and as much as I feel blessed to have such an amazing space I got itchy feet. Delivering education especially with the Cult team, allows me to keep current, pass on my knowledge and passion for hair whilst still having time to work with my clients in salon.

LET'S TALK EDUCATION

When it comes to colouring, which are your hero products? I have new hero products when it comes to colouring. Bottle Blonde clay lightener- I always shied away from clay lighteners as I couldn’t find one that allowed me to create the techniques that I wanted to, but this amazing new product lets me freehand with confidence that it’s not going to transfer but still gives me the most gentle lift and with that hueverse demi glosses. My fave shade atm is 9.77. It’s bloody perfect to reduce orange/yellow tones but also gives a lush lilac finish. How do creativity?

say an amazing photoshoot or winning awards, but actually being able to reopen my salon after a global pandemic, with a thriving business and fab team behind me was a very humbling experience. What’s on your music playlist? So, my music playlist? It’s a wild ride. One minute you could be listening to old school R&B, with a bit of drum and bass or the latest dance track, followed by songs from the musical wicked, Hamilton & a bit of pitch Perfect thrown into the mix. I’m. Not. Ashamed.

I personally don’t think you can define creativity. One persons creativity can be different to the next. Just because one person may define the French bob as ultimate creativity the next person may think long flowing balayage is the best thing since sliced bread. I feel like It comes from the individuals passion and outlook and the observers ideals. Why is creativity within education so important? Creativity in education is super important, you need to adapt to your audience and have learn how to inspire different types of stylists. Individuals need a variety of things from you so it’s important to understand your surroundings and deliver as best as you can. What has been the highlight of your career so far? My highlight of my career so far isn’t as glamorous as many of those around me. I’d love to

What makes you smile each day? My boy Stan. He’s the love of my life. The apple of my eye. He’s a mini dachshund crossed with a Havernese and has one blue eye and one brown. He also comes to the salon with me and gets more attention and treats than I do. If you weren’t working in the hair industry, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t working in the hair industry I’d most certainly be creating some wild designs around the house. I love upcycling, Either that or i’d earn the title for the worlds worst plant mom. I do try. P A G E

Why Evo? Why would you not? Not only is it a brand that delivers great results, originally in styling and fab pro , but now colour too. It also cares for everything! The stylist, the client and the environment. What more could you ask for? What makes evo different to any other hair brands you have worked with? I have worked with many other brands and whilst they were all fabulous, Evo has always stood out for me. Obviously I love the range but for me I LOVE the way that it allows me to be me. It allows you to be you. We are all individual with many different talents and it lets each one of those come out in what ever which way fits right for you. No pressure. How do you describe your style - personally, and as a hair stylist? My style both personally and as a stylist flow into one another. I like to think I’m a bit quirky, edgy and my love of brights and animal print is second to none. Actually my favourite colour is leopard print. Now obviously not every client who sits in my chair wants to walk out like that, but I hope that my sense of adventure rubs off on every client and they feel inspired to try something new. Whether it be bangs, a new cut, wild colour or change of tone. What is product?

ared-for hair is synonymous with health. Soft, shiny hair with impeccable ends is considered a sign of beauty. The degree of hydration is different in each case and needs to maintain its balance. Whether it is straight, wavy, curly, fine or thick hair, and regardless of sensitivity to humidity and unwanted frizz, all hair types need specific care. However, all hair types, without fail, “require” resistance to breakage, shine, volume, softness and long-lasting style. AURA is formulated with a premium complex of hyaluronic acid produced by fermentation. It is obtained through a high performance biotechnological method that is, safe and respectful of the environment. Applying this premium hyaluronic acid to hair offers intense hydration and protection. It increases shine and creates an anti-pollution barrier effect. Hyaluronic acid is an essential element found in the human body that acts like a sponge. Its main characteristic is its hydrating power. Its molecules are hydrophilic water-lovers that are able to store water in cells and tissue. Applying this essential element to the hair creates a hydrating layer over the hair fiber and offers intense hydration and protection of the hair. It increases shine and prevents external particles from getting trapped in hair by creating an anti-pollution barrier effect.

FAQ's Is hyaluroplasty safe for use on pregnant or breastfeeding women? There seem to be no contraindications, but just to be sure, we recommend checking with your doctor. Does hyaluroplasty contain formaldehyde or ammonia? No. It is 100% free of ammonia and formaldehyde. The product neither contains nor releases any of these chemical products during application.

We recommend cutting hair after the treatment because it will look more polished. How long should I wait after the hyaluroplasty to color hair?

Does the Hyaluronic Mask act as a neutraliser?

Hair can be colored 24 hours after treatment, prior to washing.

No. The Hyaluronic Mask acts as a hydrating treatment that restores the strength and elasticity of hair, providing exceptional softness and silkiness.

What maintenance shampoo do we recommend after this service?

Is it OK to wash hair the same day that the hyaluroplasty treatment is applied? Yes, you can wash hair on the day of treatment. What benefits does AURA offer in comparison to other treatments on the market? AURA not only straightens, but also softens hair fiber and eliminates frizz in extreme humidity. It enhances natural shine and achieves an optimal state of beauty and health for your hair. How much time should be dedicated to the hyaluroplasty? In general, about 2 to 3 hours, but hair length, type, thickness and texture should be taken into account.

C U LT B R A N D S .CO M

If the hair needs to be cut, should I do it before or after the hyaluroplasty?

P A G E

16

We recommend using Lakmé’s sulfate-free shampoos: Gentle Balance, Color Stay or BioArgan. Should a second application of hyaluroplasty be applied to the entire head or just on newly grown hair? The treatment should be applied to the whole head. Can the hyaluroplasty treatment be applied on hair treated with henna or metallic dyes? This treatment is compatible with all chemicals. However, we do not recommend applying hyaluroplasty on hair treated with henna or metallic dyes as these types of dye create a layer that prevents the product from penetrating

THE MODERN MULLET

THE HAIRSTYLE OF 2021

THE MODERN

MULLET

Like it or loathe it, it's back. History’s most divisive haircut, the mullet, is having a moment.

T

hought the mullet was dead and gone? Think again. The mullet is a hairstyle that you either love or hate. However, one thing you can't deny is how iconic mullet haircuts have become. Few hairstyles are as dividing. It invokes such intense feelings that the look has actually been argued over legislators—banned in Iran in 2010 and banned in an Australian school just this March for being “untidy” and “nonconventional.” The mullet demands that you notice it, and as a result it’s been a continual choice for icons and rulebreakers over the decades. Made famous in the '80s by the likes of David Bowie and Rod Stewart, the mullet has long divided opinion - regarded by many as an edgy, androgynous fashion statement. Today, the bad-good haircut has experienced a revival, with hairstylists reporting an uptake in requests for the business-up-front, party-at-the-back style. The mullets maintenance-free promise has only increased it’s budding popularity during last spring’s lockdowns. It’s shape-shifting potential is a big part of its allure, the modern take is a disheveled and less severe version of the 70’s trim, with lots of texture. It’s a cut that encapsulates "freedom" and fearlessness. It's a look that's full of edgy, rockabilly chic, whilst its adaptability means that it is still standout even if everyone has one. So… are you bold enough to brave the chop? PHOTOS

Tell us a little bit about your journey – what drew you to creating your own men’s grooming

range? My father Mark and I established the Lock Stock & Barrel brand in 2005 at a time when it felt there was a distinct lack of modern men’s grooming products available in the salon industry. Having already established a background in cosmetics manufacture and having a passion for men’s grooming products for many years, developing and formulating a comprehensive men’s hair grooming range from the ground up was an easy decision to make.

term based on the components of an early firearm and denotes ‘all’, ‘complete’ and ‘everything’. Aside from my father Mark’s previous occupation as a sniper in the Royal Marines, being a Birmingham-based company, we were also aware of our city’s historical place at the very heart of British gun making for centuries. What better term to describe our aim to create a complete range of grooming solutions for the men of all walks of life.

What sets Lock Stock and Barrel apart from its competitors? Much has changed in our 16 years, back in 2005 the ‘metrosexual’ resigned supreme, and Lock Stock & Barrel enjoyed a strong point of difference in a men’s grooming a market still very much in its infancy. Today, the men’s grooming market is much more sophisticated, and we have adapted to that. The things I feel make Lock Stock & Barrel unique today are not things we used to shout about too much back in the early days, and today we are immensely proud of the fact we are independently owned, we manufacture all our products in-house, and we have a small-batch attention to detail I believe which many of our larger competitors lack Where did the name Lock Stock and Barrel come from? The term Lock Stock & Barrel is an old English idiom first penned by Sir Walter Scott. It’s a

Give us the perfect example of the model modern gentleman we’re going with Beckham! That’s a tough question. I think we embrace plurality much more as a society now than we once did, and I love that. The male ideal has of course changed over time, but we think it is a man’s state of mind, rather than the labels he wears, that is most important. Back in 2005 it was a grooming brand’s chief aim to convince men it was a good thing to embrace personal care, and stars like David Beckham were the perfect pin up to show men that they themselves could embrace a new grooming regime. In 2021 that has all changed, men are matching their female counterparts in pushing boundaries in fashion, grooming and make-up in ways we’ve never seen before, so the best example of a modern man for us is someone who is proud of who they are and knows how to express that to the world. What can you expect from a LS&B product?

What does being a distinctly British brand mean to you? Aside from the being very much a British manufacturer, we have always been inspired by the role post-war British fashion, music and culture has played on the world stage. We’ve always tried to bring that to the fore in our tone of voice and imagery, and we want to show that off as much as we can.

P A G E

We really care about the things we make; I think that is most important. All our products are made in a smallbatch method, so there is very much a human-made rather than machine-made element to all our products. Naturally, we’re very proud of the work we have put into all of our formulas, they’re also truly cruelty-free, paraben-fee and all suitable for vegetarians. One product from the range you couldn’t live without? My go-to product are between 85 Karats

of how we feel about ourselves on the inside. We’re getting ever closer to a time when all men can express themselves exactly how they choose, without fear. As a grooming brand, I hope we can play our very small part in helping to build that level of tolerance in society that is still needed.

How does it feel seeing the likes of Dan Levy and Nicholas Ralph using your LS&B products? It’s great to see, for a small British brand, we’re fortunate to have a wide international footprint. We’ve gained some unexpected fans a long way and in all walks of life, from a well-known Hollywood movie star to the prolific son of a Russian oligarch, to name a few. There’s a rare quality that small and great brand possess I think, and that has helped us to have been invited to provide products for some of the world’s greatest events, such as the MTV Europe Music Awards, Brit Awards and Grammy Awards; events that would have cost larger brands an inordinate amount of money to contribute to

"The drivers that define how men groom themselves have changed

Why is a personal grooming routine important for the modern man? The drivers that define how men groom themselves have changed dramatically over the decades and that really fascinates me. Today, more than ever I think, we are acutely aware that the ‘health’ of our outward expression is intrinsically linked to the ‘health’

dramatically over the decades"

What’s next for LS+B? We’re looking forward to launching our first Eau de Toilette in the coming weeks which is our very fragrance and is based on the brand’s signature scent used in the products since 2005. P A G E

MISSION LS&B

LS&B

PHILOSOPHY Drawing on the ingenuity of British style and founded in 2005, we are an independent manufacturer of professional men's grooming products. Created specifically for hairdressers and barbers, we're proud of our independence; it has allowed us to create innovative men's grooming staples with a distinctly British personality. happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.

Some say style never goes out of fashion. We concur. Some say that god is in the detail. They’d be right. Some say that there’s a proper way of doing things. An English way. Something we wholeheartedly agree with. But there are others. Those that say that the label on your clothes says everything about you. We’d say different. And there are those who maintain that everyone looks the same, that there’s no individuality. We beg to differ. And of course there are those who claim manufacturing is dead in England. Well, they’ve clearly never visited our factory. There’s a lot said. A lot debated. But while some are all talk, we prefer to be more about action. Making, doing, perfecting.

ETHOS To limit our impact upon the world by reducing our carbon footprint and to strive to create products that are clean, truly cruelty free and will leave no trace on the world. We are passionately against the principle of animal testing, and we believe our suppliers should feel the same. That’s why we are one of only very few certified cruelty free professional hair care brands.

ell us a little bit about your journey – what drew you to opening your own barbers? After 14 years of cutting hair for other salons I decided the Barber life was for me, so the search for a shop that had good training and high standards and most of all a great vibe. But what I found was there just wasn’t that style of shop so that’s when Barberology was created an all round real modern Barbers. What's the story behind Barberology? Barberology was created to give amazing standards and education with a cool Pub vibe, a place that can give the customer a sense that they’ve really been to a special place with there friends and received the best possible service. 2015 we opened our doors after a long search and build to create the Barberology experience not just the shop but the area to match. What do you love most about being situated in the JQ? Birmingham’s historic and vibrant gem! It must be great having that on your doorstep. The JQ, basically the village in the city, was one of the most important parts of the brand. Vibes of old school gangsters and films that men love, we knew that we could be a part of this and fit in perfectly. What makes Barberology unique? Just looking at Barberology reviews you can tell that we are unique on a big scale compared to most Barbershops, such as we are not just focussed on great service and the best cuts we can guarantee a great vibe and that Pub like environment that men just want to keep coming back.

Banter is king! What has been the highlight of your journey with Barberology so far? After the constant hard work and dedication all of the barbers that work for Barberology, the awards and reviews are the biggest highlights, we know we are doing great Where does your passion for barbering stem from? After working in Salons for years the Barbershop and mens hairdressing is just so different, but that aside working in a barbershop and creating cuts and styles that change mens life on a daily basis is where the passion comes from. What is your typical day like? Arriving early to set up the shop, turn the coffee machine on and make sure the shop is smelling and looking pretseen and inviting. Looking over the appointments and making sure the day will flow perfect is essential to the start as we tend to always be fully booked throughout the week. After that all the Barbers will arrive and we can make sure we are all happy and ready to dive in. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Eduction and passion is key to being a barber, you can never stop learning, I’m still doing hair courses and learning from the Barbers who work in the shop. What would people be surprised to learn about you? Apart from been able to play the spoons I also worked in a Hair replacement centre now that’s a crazy before and after job if I do say so.
