Austin is a foodie paradise. From the countless food trucks serving mouth-watering cheap-eats (a focal point of the city’s culinary landscape), to buzzy award winning chefs opening a steady stream of new restaurants. Whether you’re seeking staples like BBQ and tacos, or looking to sample global flavors from Japanese, Thai, French, and more, Austin has you covered.

MATT’S EL RANCHO
“Just because of their breakfast tacos. I usually get 3 or 4 of their huge breakfast tacos with egg, sausage, bacon, and serrano. Not sure why, but these particular tacos are the spiciest I’ve had in Austin. They got some good serranos.”
“Get the breakfast taco and fried avocado taco (with nookies on the side).”
“The decor is hip, bright, tropical and nostalgic. They have small shareable plates, great cocktails, and birthday cake ice cream sandwiches. Brunch there is a dream. I always order the pancakes that come with your own kitty-cat syrup decanter.”
“It has some of the best Tex-Mex you’ll ever eat and a great outdoor patio. Get a Bob’s queso, beef fajitas and you definitely have to get a Matt’s Knockout Mexican Martini. One and done.”

The bar scene in Austin has something for everyone. From dive bars slinging Lone Stars, to cantinas with biggerin-Texas margaritas, to upscale speakeasy’s serving craft cocktails, not to mention the numerous breweries that have popped up all over town in recent years. But this is Austin, and what really sets the bar scene apart here is the local flavor. You don’t have to wander very far to enjoy live music with your drink of choice or even a little two-stepping. Cheers to that.

This town runs on caffeine, how else would everyone power through all the late nights spent watching live music? (Answer: breakfast tacos). Boutique coffee shops can be found all over town, each brewing their own lovingly made version of the best cup of joe, from nitro cold brews, to a frothy latte. Find your perch and stay a while.

“There’s a really quirky/weird coffee shop close to the UT campus called Spider House. It’s right down the street from my old college house. I used to study there a lot and even played a benefit show there once when I was in school.” also recommended by Micah Nelson

What constitutes a landmark in Austin is open to interpretation. There’s historical landmarks like the Texas State Capitol and Driskill Hotel, but then you have not-to-be missed local flavor that are attractions in their own right: the “I Love You So Much” mural on South Congress, the Bat Bridge, the Austin Motel’s neon sign notorious for its iconic shape, and of course no trip to Austin is complete without twostepping at the fabled Broken Spoke.

“It’s the result of a failed building development in the 80s. I guess it’s not really underrated anymore though, now it’s like a tourist graffiti park or something. But I used to go up there as a teenager with friends and smoke weed and graffiti and look out at the Austin skyline (back when the Frost Bank tower was like the tallest building) and then sometimes the cops would show up and we’d hide from them. This was before it was a tourist attraction.” “Waterloo Records supports local artists and is a great place to catch an in-store performance or just shop for some vinyl.” also recommended by Curtis Roush

With warm temps throughout the year, Austinites are all about soaking in the sun. Locals love taking advantage of the many surrounding nature trails, cooling off in watering holes like Barton Springs, dining al fresco, and of course enjoying live music on the many stages and festivals situated under the big Texas sky.

“It’s a cave, does that count? Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. You take a big tour through a 10,000 year old cave system. I’ve been coming here since I was 5 years-old and it’s always awesome!”
“Pitch a tent at Pedernales State Park. Make sure you look up at the night sky! You’ve never seen starscapes quite like the Hill Country kind.”
“Natural spring water, everyone is happy, amazing high diving board, the grassy hill overlooking the pool and Austin.” also recommended by Micah Nelson, Austin Basham
“For me, Mayfield Park, or also named, the Peacock Sanctuary. It’s the first place I think of going on my days off; Stone pathways separating multiple lily ponds, and peacocks EVERYWHERE. It’s so peaceful, and there are trails you can wander through surrounding the property. There is also a secret waterfront spot I love to go to.”

FEATURED WILLIAM HARRIES GRAHAM It’s that time again, when thousands of musicians, tech nerds, filmmakers and culture lovers flock to Austin for SXSW. With the festival in its 31st year, the city has amped up its hotel game in preparation for the annual crowds. You’ll find hostels, motels, upscale hotels, airstreams and more, always sporting that signature Texas feel with a modernist look. So book yourself a spot, and avoid the couch surfing.

FEATURED It’s easy to find a stage almost anywhere in this music-friendly city, the most iconic being The Moody Theater, home of the ACL Live tapings. There’s also Stubb’s known for its BBQ as much as the bands that have played there. Then there’s small to midsized venues all over town showcasing touring acts as well as Austin’s local talent, be it bluegrass, or a hard rock show. Whatever the case may be, you won’t be led astray.

FROM THE HILLS WITH LOVE
“There isn’t a bad seat at this spot. They also have fantastic sound and lights! House sound is pumped into the bathroom so you never have to miss a moment of the action!”
“I like the intimacy of the indoor stage but the outdoor stage is pretty great, too. Even if it’s a packed house you feel like you can breathe and enjoy the show outdoors.” also recommended by Walker Lukens
“I personally love the vibe at Cheer up Charlies. They have a fun cozy indoor stage, and a big outdoor stage in front of a massive rock wall. They’ve got awesome drinks there, and a lot of space to hang.” also recommended by Walker Lukens “I’m totally biased, but probably have to say the best place to catch a show is at my ranch during the week of SX. We have an annual party out here called From The Hills With Love, where bands we also love play tunes. Food, drink and good times abound. There’s nothing quite like a proper loud rock show out here in the country with sweeping hills as the backdrop - nothing.”
AN ODE TO EGO’S
“ Does it come as any surprise that the “Live Music Capital” attracts a sizable karaoke crowd? If you want to do karaoke in Austin right, you have to hit up the OG spot: Ego’s. Tucked behind South Congress, this dive bar with one stage offers free karaoke every night of the week from 9pm-2am. Cheap drinks offer plenty of liquid courage so you can check your ego at the door, and let go of any inhibitions before you get behind the mic.
To me it’s the people that make Ego’s great. So many different walks of life coming together and bonding over good times and music. At Ego’s we like to say that we’ve been ‘turning friends into family since 1979.’ — Laura J. Kosmerl, General Manager
WALKER LUKENS
