Welcome to Create! Eastside Arts Festival

Newly expanded to a week-long event, the 4th annual CREATE! Eastside Arts Festival is an exciting and immersive arts festival this summer, bringing together local artists and the community to explore, learn, and create in Strathcona Park, alongside pop up locations such as breweries, performance venues, and art studios across the Eastside Arts District.

This innovative event celebrates the diversity of performing and visuals arts in Vancouver’s Eastside, and offers arts workshops, live music & dance performances, a beer garden, public art activations, an art shop and many more opportunities for art lovers of all ages and abilities to experience!

Candice Weber is the artist behind Loudly Insecure, a fibre art studio in Vancouver, BC. She is a multidisciplinary fibre artist and filmmaker. Though trained in animation and film, her passion expanded to include jewellery design, laser cutting, CNC embroidery, weaving, beading, and hand embroidery through fine art courses, residencies, and volunteer work. Her unique style bridges digital and traditional crafts.

Nicole Caspillo

Learn the basics of weaving on your very own loom to keep! In this workshop, you’ll discover how to prepare your loom, master approachable weaving techniques, and finish your piece beautifully.

Nicole Caspillo is a multi-disciplinary (Fibre, Ceramics, Sound) artist, trained Expressive Arts Therapist and Chef who lives and works in East Vancouver. Being of Filipino descent, spending her childhood in Malaysia, living in the PNW, and travelling have influenced her creative process. Nicole is inspired by nature, passionate about connecting with others in community, and empowering the artist in everyone.

The CREATE! Eastside Arts Festival takes place on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples. We are grateful to gather on these lands, and we work from a place of respect and responsibility to this gift.

Janine Schroedter

Get your green thumb inky in this plant-themed stamp carving workshop! Using your favorite plant or local flora, you’ll draw, transfer, carve, and print beautiful plant images. We’ll start with an overview of the project, then work together through each stage until you’re ready to print. In this course, we will use stamp pads and discuss blending options as well as traditional ink printing techniques.

Janine Schroedter is a multidisciplinary artist working in printmaking, painting, and ceramics. Inspired by the natural world, her art reflects human behaviour and societal impacts on nature. Her work aims to connect distant causes with local issues. She also teaches printmaking, ceramics, and drawing to both children and adults.

In this workshop, you’ll craft your very own 8 to 16 page zine from start to finish. We’ll explore various doodle techniques that you can incorporate into your zine-making process. Not sure what a zine is? It’s a small magazine or booklet filled with homemade art, text, or whatever inspires you.

Kaodraws is a Taiwanese-born Vancouver-based multidisciplinary designer, illustrator, and surreal dreamscape artist. Her art is like a big mixtape of different styles– graffiti, modern art, cartoons, and weird dreams all rolled into one funky package.

Cara Guri

In this vibrant workshop, you’ll venture into the world of acrylic painting to create your very own stunning moth or butterfly masterpiece! You’ll learn the essentials of paint handling, blending, shading, and some exciting techniques for adding expressive textures to your artwork.

Cara Guri is a professional visual artist and hyperrealist painter. She completed a BFA from Emily Carr and a painting residency at Columbia University. Her paintings, which play with perception, identity

construction, the interconnectedness of people and their environment and the messy line between literal and psychological space, have been exhibited throughout Canada and New York.

Liz Oakley

In this workshop, participants will use reclaimed materials to create their own rod puppet. We’ll sculpt heads from newspaper and tape, make bodies from fabric, paint faces, and accessorize with found materials. We’ll also learn to animate the puppets using rods. This workshop teaches quick puppet-making techniques and creative reuse of household materials, with a focus on intuitive design. Human, animal, and hybrid puppets are welcome, and getting weird is encouraged!

Liz Oakley is a multidisciplinary artist who makes object-based performances, installations, and events. Their work playfully animates materials, text, sites, and situations. They are an arts educator, puppet designer, deviser, and puppeteer. Originally from New York City, they are currently living in so-called Vancouver pursuing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at SFU.

Megan Majewski

In this workshop, participants will follow along to craft a beautiful, multi layered floral artwork. Attendees will learn the method of painting an abstract base watercolour layer to help encompass the essence of the flower colours. Participants will draw several layers of flowers on a semi transparent paper that will layer over one another to create a soft depth to the piece.

Megan Majewski is a Vancouver-based pop-surreal artist who creates captivating narratives from dreams and memories. Her work includes augmented reality paintings, immersive installations, murals, and illustrations. As a GOLDEN Artist Educator and Silver Brush Educator, she teaches artists of all levels. Megan works from her studio at The Arts Factory in Vancouver.

Immerse yourself in a culture brimming with vibrant stories, colours, and traditions. Reconnect with history, uncovering tales, and find quietness and inner peace as we paint the legend of Turtle Island together. Join us and rediscover North America’s past.

James Groening or Blue Sky is a Cree Saulteaux Artist located in Burnaby. He paints in the Woodland style and uses art as a cultural reconnect, as he was a 60 scoop kid that grew up void of language, culture and identity.

Roman Czemerys

In this workshop, you will learn a technique loved by urban sketchers and travel journalists alike! Discover the magic of combining ink line drawing with vibrant watercolour washes. You’ll transform simple line drawings into stunning paintings through a relaxed, three-step process. Learn to sketch, add black highlights, and tint with watercolours to create vibrant, captivating artworks.

Roman Czemerys is a Vancouverbased artist who transitioned from designing buildings to creating intricate ink line and watercolour artworks. His unique style blends meticulous ink work with free-flowing watercolour washes. Now retired from architecture, Roman spends his time urban sketching and painting in his studio at 1000 Parker Street in Vancouver.

Children under 12 must be accompanied/ supervised by an adult during the workshop (adults are not required to participate unless specified)

Join us to transform regionally invasive plants, harvested from local restoration sites, into unique bookmarks! Using a base of recycled paper, participants will learn papermaking techniques while also delving into discussions about local ecology and the significance of plants like English Ivy, Red Deadnettle, Reed Canary Grass, Tansy, and others featured in the workshop.

Joshua Ralph (Invasive Art Initiative) is an uninvited settler on the lands of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. They are a community-engaged media and eco-artist focused on changing ecologies and the intersection of art and the natural world. Joshua founded the Invasive Art Initiative, a travelling project that promotes environmental dialogues and workshops on using invasive plant species in Southwest BC. They are often found participating in environmental restoration or birdwatching.

Join the Flowering in Crochet workshop and learn the basics of crochet by making a flower. Walk home with a handmade accessory: hair tie, a clip, a magnet, a pair of earrings or a keychain. This workshop is a beginner friendly workshop, no previous experience is required.

Gladys Carmina is a Vancouver-based fibre artist who learned to crochet from her grandmother in Mexico at age 12. Seeking a crafty community, she hosts workshops and gatherings for yarn lovers. On her blog, Happiness is Handmade, she shares her creative process and the joy of making. Recently, Gladys started a YouTube channel with crochet tutorials.

Amberlie Perkin

This workshop offers kids an exciting introduction to basic clay techniques, where they’ll craft a decorative ceramic plate inspired by their favourite theme. Participants will

explore a range of clay techniques to bring their unique designs to life, including using tools for intricate textures, adding 3D elements, and utilising sgraffito for detailed carving. Afterward, vibrant ceramic glazes will be applied to achieve a bold, colourful finish.

Amberlie Perkin holds a Master of Visual Arts from Emily Carr University and a Bachelor of Education from Simon Fraser University. As an art educator and interdisciplinary artist, she works in painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. In 2020, she founded Studio One One Six, a multi-artist space in Vancouver. Amberlie has exhibited locally and internationally and teaches high school Visual Arts. With years of experience teaching all ages, she is passionate about helping people develop creativity and confidence through art.

Ava Katz

Discover easy hand embroidery stitches and design your own project! This workshop is perfect for experimenting with textures or focusing on a single stitch. We’ll start with a stitch sampler to learn basic techniques and materials, which will also serve as a reference for your piece. Each participant will design a unique pattern and transfer it onto fabric. You’ll receive an embroidery hoop and guidance on selecting stitches and colours. Enjoy the meditative pace of embroidery.

Ava Katz is a multimedia artist and educator with a BFA from Emily Carr University. Fascinated by textiles for their sensory and narrative qualities, Ava combines painting, drawing, and sewing in innovative ways. Their large-scale textile sculptures use painterly techniques to create richly tactile objects that invite interaction. In embroidery, they blend spontaneous design with meditative stitching.

Adeline Poufong is a queer interdisciplinary artist and expressive arts practitioner from Ireland. Her mixed Irish and Cameroonian heritage shapes her exploration of cultural identity. Her work focuses on self-discovery, empowerment, Black joy, Queerness, and liberation. Addy uses various mediums, including paint, ceramics, textiles, video, writing, poetry, and sculpture, to express her creativity.

Pilar Mehlis

Join us and learn to use charcoal as a tool and create atmospheric sketches of Strathcona park. We will begin with technical exercises and demonstrations as a group and then move to an area of the park to sketch. This class will provide students with a method that they can incorporate into their art practice or use as a way of recording the world around them.

Pilar Mehlis grew up in La Paz, Bolivia and in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. After graduating from the University of Victoria with a double major in Visual Arts and art history Pilar pursued further studies in painting and drawing at the former Art Academy of Vancouver, Langara College with Paul Chizik, at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, USA and at Juliette Aristides’ private Atelier.

Jhoely Triana

Join us for an engaging class where you’ll discover the essence of Flamenco in an easy-to-follow format. Learn the fundamental elements, including basic steps and concepts such as hand and arm movements, body techniques, low-impact footwork, rhythmic hand clapping, and the spirited “jaleo” (words of encouragement like “Olé”).

Jhoely Triana is a Vancouver based artist who was born in Colombia. She trained at Goh Ballet Academy, earned a BFA in Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University, and studied at Al Mozaico Flamenco and Rosario Flamenco. She’s showcased her work across BC and travelled for professional development in Spain, Poland, and the USA. Jhoely’s work emphasises connection to the audience through authenticity of emotion and vulnerability.

Get ready for an exciting adventure in artistry. In this workshop you will use watercolour techniques with acrylics on an unexpected canvas. You will be thrilled with this new medium - it’s not your traditional watercolour paper!

Sonya Iwasiuk is a contemporary mixed media artist and has taught mixed media to adults for over 14 years. She pioneers unique techniques like embossed acrylic skins and paintings on rusted steel sheets. Constantly experimenting, Sonya brings fresh, contemporary approaches to her art and teaching.

Terminal City Glass Co-op

Discover the mesmerising world of glass fusing! You’ll learn the basics of glass cutting and pattern formation, while exploring a palette of vibrant colours and captivating shapes. We’ll even mix in age-old mosaic techniques to add an extra layer of creativity! After crafting your piece, your tile will be fired in a kiln, resulting in a beautifully finished artwork.

Terminal City Glass Co-op (established in 2012) offers memberships, studio access and public educational programming in glass arts at the Mergatroid Building in East Vancouver. The studio’s education program includes classes in glassblowing, flameworking, beadmaking, and sandblasting, taught by experienced glassmakers. It is the first non-profit, cooperative glass studio in Canada.

Naomi Yamamoto

Experience the enchantment of indigo resist dyeing methods in this captivating workshop! Gain a fundamental understanding of the process while creating stunning hand-dyed pieces. We’ll provide some fabric for your creations, but feel free to bring along your own pre-washed cotton, silk, or linen materials to dye.

Naomi Yamamoto graduated with distinction from the Fibre Program at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2006. She created Flightpath Designs in 2007 to bring together the three muses that move her the most: travel, design and textiles. Her current work is inspired from a childhood which provided a rich source of exposure to different craft processes stemming from her Japanese ancestry.

Kat McPhee , a East Vancouver-based artist, has a sharp eye for colour and a quirky sense of humour. Her vibrant, expressionist portraits have quickly earned a loyal following. Applying elements of graffiti, pop art and animation as inspiration, Kat uses a broad palette that includes oil pastels, acrylics and spray paint to add density and texture to her pieces. Alternative Creations Studio

Come paint pots and plant flowers as a way to explore themes of personal growth. Participants of all ages will not only get to bring home their beautifully decorated pot and flower, they will also have learned ways to help themselves and those around them blossom.

Alternative Creations Studio, located in East Vancouver, is a collective that supports artists with developmental disabilities. Their studio provides the opportunity for artists to experiment, explore and hone their skills. Since 2013, their focus has been to enrich the lives of our artists, their families and the broader community. They pride themselves on collaborating in like-minded initiatives, sharing studio space, and connecting with the wider public by hosting community workshops and other events. The 9th annual Art! Bike! Beer! Crawl takes art lovers on a cycling or walking tour of 3 breweries. This tour is an incredibly fun opportunity for attendees to enjoy the best the Eastside Arts District has to offer, art AND beer! The event wraps up at CREATE! Eastside Arts Festival where participants will enjoy a final tasting from Strange Fellows Brewing, the Art Zone activities at the CREATE! Eastside Arts Festival, including live music, public art activities, an art shop and food trucks. A tasting flight or pint is included at all 4 stops. This event supports the Eastside Arts Society's programming and festivals, to further deepen the public’s engagement and awareness of arts and culture in the Eastside.

What is the Event Schedule?

The CREATE! Eastside Arts Festival: Monday, July 22nd - Sunday, 28th.

Pop-up workshops: July 22-26, 7-8:30pm at various locations.

Strathcona Park: Saturday, July 27th, workshops run 12:30-2pm and 2:30-4pm

The ART! BIKE! BEER! Crawl runs 1-5pm

CREATE! Festival Concert + public art, art shop, food trucks and beer garden run 2-6pm.

Pop Up Performances run various times at various locations across the Eastside Arts District and throughout the week. See our website for all the details.

How Long Are Workshops? Workshops are 1.5 - 2 hours.

What Do I Get in A Workshop? Each workshop will teach participants how to create art or learn a performing art skill.

Where is the Event Location?

The festival site location on Saturday July 27th is Strathcona Park, Vancouver (857 Malkin Ave. entrance off Raymur).

Locations for pop up workshops July 22-26 are Alternative Creations Studio (1659 Venables Street), Luppolo Brewing (1123 Venables Street), Off the Rail Brewing (1351 Adanac Street) and Strange Fellows Brewing (1345 Clark Drive).

Sunday July 28th are Mergatroid Building/Terminal City Glass (1191 Parker St. Vancouver), Parker Street Studios (1000 Parker Street) and Arts Factory (281 Industrial).

What About the Weather?

This event is rain or shine! All workshops and art activities on Saturday are tented and pop up workshops and performances are inside.

Before Booking, What Should I Know?

See specific workshop details for suitable ages of each workshop. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your workshop time to allow time to check in.

On Sunday, June 28, attendees will meet outside of the Arts Factory, Mergatroid and Parker Street Studios to check in. Pop up performance check ins vary, please see listings for full details.

Tickets & Refunds:

• Workshops are $35, except for the children’s & Flamenco workshops which are $20.

• CREATE! Festival Concert is FREE. Get your free tickets through our site via Eventbrite.

• The Art! Bike! Beer! Crawl Brewery tour tickets are $55 (19+ only). Tickets can be purchased through our site via Eventbrite

Tickets can be refunded 4 days prior to the festival and are processed through point of purchase (Eventbrite).

What Should I Bring?

All materials are provided for each workshop except where noted in each workshop description. All workshops are suitable for beginners and up. Bring aprons or smocks to protect clothes for messy activities.

For CREATE! Festival Concert attendees, there is limited seating & tenting–attendees are welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs into the site.

Can I Bring my Dog?

For the safety and comfort of all, we ask that pets be left at home. Dogs are not permitted in the event site. Service animals are welcome.

What Should I Wear?

The event is rain or shine. We strongly recommend that participants be prepared for the weather outside during their time at the festival and wear comfortable clothing and footwear, bring layers, water and sunscreen. Workshop areas will be tented. Bring aprons or smocks to protect clothes.

Parking | Transit | Biking:

On Saturday, July 27th there is controlled street parking on the east side of Strathcona Park and around Mergatroid Studios, but we encourage everyone to utilize car shares, take transit, cycle or walk to the event. There will be dedicated bike racks at Strathcona Park on Saturday available on a first come, first served basis along Raymur. Bring your bike lock.

Are there Washrooms?

On Saturday, July 27th at Strathcona Park, there will be washrooms provided on site and in the field house of the park. Washrooms on site will be gender-neutral portable structures, with one wheelchairaccessible portable washroom.

Are There Food and Drinks on

Site?

On Saturday, July 27th at Strathcona Park, food trucks will be on-site (Camion Café, Midnight Joe’s & Varinicey Pakoras) as well as beer, cider and wine from Strange Fellows Brewing (19+ to purchase). The site is licensed, non-alcoholic beverages will be available. Food and beverage availability for pop up workshops and performances vary, please see partner locations for details.

What Items are Prohibited?

On Saturday, July 27th at Strathcona Park, no weapons of any kind. No drugs and/or drug use. No outside alcohol or food. No dogs or pets allowed on site. Prohibited items for pop up performances, please see partner locations for details.

What is the Accessibility of the Weekday Events?

On weekdays, each workshop is located in a different Eastside brewery or studio. Details for accessibility are listed in the workshop details on Eventbrite.

What is the Accessibility of the Saturday Event?

On Saturday, the event site is on grass, gravel, and uneven terrain, there is no ramp access to the park. The open-air work setting will have ambient noise, conversational sound levels, and loud areas with the noise of food truck generators and live music. There’s a wheelchair-accessible portable washroom on site.

What is the Accessibility of the Sunday Event?

On Sunday, each workshop is located in a different Eastside Studio. Details for accessibility are listed in the workshop details on Eventbrite.
